LJ in Transfer Portal?

Never in a million did I expected to read this. I was more inclined to think that he was going overseas.

But, as pointed out, this is St. John's.

The kid was not the same player last year, and now has flaked out.

If I'm CM, I don't try to get him to change his mind again. I'd go with the young/new guns.

Sheesh.

Yes I was thinking the same. If he's going to sit out a year, why not just go play pro overseas now? Is it possible he's eligible to play immediately? Does the year he spent at Odessa College count as a first year?[/quote]
He definitely would have to sit out but suspect he & advisors must have angle for some type of waiver. We’ll see.

He's already 22 years old. Why would a kid who has the ability to play professionally somewhere opt to sit out a year to play one more year in college somewhere and turn pro at the age of 24?

Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me unless he has been assured by his advisors that he will qualify for a waiver. Hope for his sake, that they know what they are talking about.

I doubt he & advisors think he will have to sit out. This seems calculated.

Figueroa is going to get more villified than Tariq Owens.

Is Salnave officially signed w/ DePaul or just verbal?

@NYPost_Brazille
Schools have been in LJ Figueroa's ear that he would be able to get a waiver if he transferred based on the coronavirus's impact in NYC. Huge news that he's in the portal obviously. #sjubb

Good riddance honestly. Never understood why so many people thought this kid was good. He shot 37% from the field last year and took by far the most shots on the team. I personally think they’ll be much better off without him. Last year the team played so much more cohesively, especially Champagnie and Earlington, with him sitting on the bench. I can’t help but think back to the game at Providence where he chucked up 10+ 3s from 30 ft behind the 3pt line.

That being said CMA and staff completely botched this. They could have had a quality replacement a long time ago (Salnave and probably others too). It’s probably too late now but we’ll see. The honeymoon is officially over.

When we lost heron last year most thought the sky was falling, We were actually a much better team w/o him., Same thing will happen here.

put up a team of our ex players who transferred and still in college

Figueroa, Dixon, Keita, Wilson, Trimble.....

According to source, messaging will never change to fit a single player at St. John's. Players must buy into DNA of the program and remain all-in throughout. Was also stressed just how well-liked Figueroa truly is on campus and that the door is "always open" for a return. #SJUBB

Time to move on. Hopefully addition by subtraction. With little dialogue recently, and staff giving him so much time to deliberate, maybe there should have been a deadline in order to move on to one of the (grad) transfers staff was looking at.

There are viable grad transfers still going on the market every day
There will be options available to us if CMA wants to add another player

Dixon, Trimble, Keita all saw need to go to a lower level of competition to get more PT. Had no problem with any of their transfer decisions. I guess this one shouldn't be a shock since he almost did it last year. Life goes on and it will certainly open up opportunities for others who might have been caught in numbers game.

Cut ties, no waiver granted, good luck in Europe.

This makes little to no sense unless a waiver was in play. I think a lot of coaches are using the coronavirus as a way to recruit kids saying they will get a waiver to play, but nobody really knows and the NCAA isn’t exactly on top of things when it comes to waivers.

I’m usually all for players doing what they want, whether it be playing professionally or transferring because they have to do what’s best for them. But the timing of this really puts the program in a bad spot. It is pretty known that we could’ve landed 2 good players to fill this last scholarship if we had known LJ’s status just a couple weeks ago.
