Legal Battle Over Big East Name / N.Y. Post

I think if a "group" leave together and form a new league (not join an existing one)---no exit fee!

There is never an exit fee...................
If you wait out the over 2 yr time frame.

If we can't get the Big East name, of all the names I have heard I like this one the best: The Big Catholic Conf. (BCC) I dont care if butler is protestant the name is sick and they will be one of ten or twelve.

No, no, no! Having a religious designation can have nothing but a negative impact on recruiting. And if you don't think so, you're living in a dream world.

Ahh I see perhaps it wasn't Jarvis or Norm holding us back but rather our name St. John's because of its religious affiliation.

No one is suggesting that. What I'm saying is that if you have a conference made up exclusively of Catholic universities (with maybe one exception, Butler), one that is designated as a Catholic conference (as you're suggesting) and therefore repeatedly called Catholic every single time it's mentioned in the media, would probably raise all kinds of concerns in the minds of parents of non-Catholic recruits (as well as in the minds of some recruits themselves) -- especially with families that have strong religious ties of their own. The Big Catholic Conference It doesn't sound "athletic," expansive, or welcoming; it sounds exclusionary, religiously restrictive, and doctrinaire ... and that's a potential turn-off to lots of people.

I don't think having a name implying a Catholic designation will matter one bit to anyone who matters.

Do people not go to St. Francis Hospital because of the name or do they do because it's the best heart hospital in the area?

Do people avoid Long Island Jewish, Mr. Sinai Medical Center, if they are not Jewish?

Students don't avoid Catholic Universities if they aren't Catholic - I don't think your assertion makes one bit of difference.

You must be kidding with this crap! Our name is Saint John's if a recruit or his family are ok with the Catholic name of the university but not ok with the Catholic 7 that would be insane!!!! Do you think that a recruit is ok playing for a Catholic university but not ok playing against other Catholic teams!!!!! GET REAL!

Hey, don't get your knickers in a twist! And to answer your question: yes, I do believe that naming our conference something like the Big Catholic Conference would hurt recruiting. You obviously you have a lot more faith (pardon the expression) in people's open-mindedness than I do. Our new conference's name should reflect geography and/or our big-city roots, and not religion. There's simply no up side to it.

Don't you think it is more than a coincidence that it was 7 Catholic Schools that got together to break away and form their own league?

How about the NFL (No football League)?

Not at all. Those were the schools that happened to not have football.

Exactly.

(Would like to invite you to my just-established annual Catholics-only sports luncheon. But don't let the name mislead you: It's open to people of all faiths.)

-------

Villanova and Georgetown play lower division football. Villanova has expressed interest in moving their program up to the higher division. Possible invites Butler, Xavier, Dayton and Richmond also field non-scholarship football teams. DePaul and St John's, the two largest Catholic colleges, do not.

As for the name of the league, if it's not going to be the Big East my hope is whoever at St John's may have been responsible for Red Storm has nothing to do with choosing the new name.

I know they field teams. But as far as the BCS is concerned, lower division football means no football at all. And Villanova draws about 40 people a game and doesn't have a real stadium. Good luck moving up.

Actually about 7,000 in a home field that seats about 9,000.

Not counted in the above the "battle of Philadelphia" against Temple drew 33,000. The following week, in a home game against ACC Maryland, Temple drew 23,000.

So the capacity is not the problem then LOL. Monroe-Woodbury gets 4,000 fans to its high school games. The reason these schools broke off is because they all lack major football programs, and they were tired of being treated like also-rans. Notre Dame is Catholic and they want nothing to do with the "Catholic 7." Why? Because they have major football.

I think if the Catholic 7 breakaway had happened before ND joined the ACC, they would have been glad to remain with us for basketball, while remain independent for football. Now they are committed to playing almost half their games against crappy ACC football teams.

I agree. In fact didn't Brey pretty much say that exact same thing? I wonder if they can void their ACC contract if enough teams bolt. I wouldn't be surprised to see them with the "catholic 7" in the future.

And lets be honest here. Villanova will NEVER have FBS football. No way…no how. There are so many reasons against this but clearly their fan base just doesn't get it. They seem to be content living in a dream world where they're in the Big East or ACC. Their program would make Temple look like Alabama.
