I think if a "group" leave together and form a new league (not join an existing one)---no exit fee!
If we can't get the Big East name, of all the names I have heard I like this one the best: The Big Catholic Conf. (BCC) I dont care if butler is protestant the name is sick and they will be one of ten or twelve.
No, no, no! Having a religious designation can have nothing but a negative impact on recruiting. And if you don't think so, you're living in a dream world.

Ahh I see perhaps it wasn't Jarvis or Norm holding us back but rather our name St. John's because of its religious affiliation.

Call it the Devine Nine. Hints at a higher power, but does not exclude any institutions

You must be kidding with this crap! Our name is Saint John's if a recruit or his family are ok with the Catholic name of the university but not ok with the Catholic 7 that would be insane!!!! Do you think that a recruit is ok playing for a Catholic university but not ok playing against other Catholic teams!!!!! GET REAL!

Hey, don't get your knickers in a twist! And to answer your question: yes, I do believe that naming our conference something like the Big Catholic Conference would hurt recruiting. You obviously you have a lot more faith (pardon the expression) in people's open-mindedness than I do. Our new conference's name should reflect geography and/or our big-city roots, and not religion. There's simply no up side to it.
Not at all. Those were the schools that happened to not have football.Don't you think it is more than a coincidence that it was 7 Catholic Schools that got together to break away and form their own league?

Villanova and Georgetown play lower division football. Villanova has expressed interest in moving their program up to the higher division. Possible invites Butler, Xavier, Dayton and Richmond also field non-scholarship football teams. DePaul and St John's, the two largest Catholic colleges, do not.

I know they field teams. But as far as the BCS is concerned, lower division football means no football at all. And Villanova draws about 40 people a game and doesn't have a real stadium. Good luck moving up.

Actually about 7,000 in a home field that seats about 9,000.
Not counted in the above the "battle of Philadelphia" against Temple drew 33,000. The following week, in a home game against ACC Maryland, Temple drew 23,000.
I think if the Catholic 7 breakaway had happened before ND joined the ACC, they would have been glad to remain with us for basketball, while remain independent for football. Now they are committed to playing almost half their games against crappy ACC football teams.
