Legal Battle Over Big East Name / N.Y. Post

If I recall correctly, the NCAA rule is that you need to have 7 schools who have played together for 5 years for NCAA recognition as a conference.

The Catholic 7 meet that criterion. The remaining schools do not.

In other words, if the C7 stayed "in conference" and all the other schools left as a group, the C7 would be entitled to the name, and the other schools would not.

The complication would be that the C7 are "leaving." I assume there is some calculation that was involved in choosing to "leave" instead of simply ejecting all of the non-C7 schools (I don't know what the Big East constitution and bylaws say about how you eject a member or voting, but I assume that's the crux of it).

However, it seems to me that the non-C7 schools are not entitled to the name. It will probably cost the C7 schools some money to settle that issue, but IMHO the history and branding associated with the Big East name make it worth keeping. The Garden would naturally flow from that as well as the Garden would want to keep "the Big East Tournament."

If none of that works out, then presumably the Barclay Center will be the home of the new league's basketball tournament. But personally I would encourage the C7 to fight for the name and the Garden and give up some money if need be. They will make it back.

Besides, it's ridiculous to give the Big East name to a group of schools that will not be playing together as a league within 3 years. It's just not of the same value to them as it is to the C7, since the other schools will soon splinter and go to various other conferences.

the othere schools dont want the name, they want to use it as a wedge to squeeze the Catholic 7 for some money. In the end whether we get the name or not, we will get the Garden.

Barclays has A10 tournament

how about the following:
the big eastern conference
the big eastern city conference
the big east city conference

No, no and no.

We could go all Batman and have the Gotham Basketball Conference (GBC). Lets every city think of themselves as the hub.

If we can't get the Big East name, of all the names I have heard I like this one the best: The Big Catholic Conf. (BCC) I dont care if butler is protestant the name is sick and they will be one of ten or twelve.

Butler has no religious affiliation.

No, no, no! Having a religious designation can have nothing but a negative impact on recruiting. And if you don't think so, you're living in a dream world.

Agree any name with a religious tone will make it difficult for advertisers, the media, recruiting etc.
