Lavin

I guess my idea of having a Redmen.com get together at Monte's apartment, honoring Steve Lavin, may merit reconsideration.

I'm down provided we can get the 3 guys from Boston there,

Sort of ironic that I know the guys from Boston, who have known Lavin since he was the assistant coach at UCLA. My buddy has the highest regard for Lavin as a person, has not changed from when he was an Assistant Coach. Knew he was struggling recruiting wise in latter part of his tenure, as he mentioned there were other issues. Having said that Lavin knew he was accountable at the end of the day.

My own personal opinion is that Lavin is employed by Fox, so he has to comment on SJU. So can we get over it finally, it is ridiculous that when his name comes up the criticism resurfaces. It is a new era, lets move on.

I agree with you that Lavin has to comment on us because he is being paid to do so. I said so in an earlier post. And I'll tell you what, I'll promise to never utter another criticism of Lavin if those with a continued Lavin man-crush can manage to refrain complimenting him. I think that's fair.

Thread would be slightly less terrible if you guys knew how to use the quote function.
Or not used at all. Way overused, have to constantly scroll down 15 posts. Should be used more judiciously. :holdbreath:

Without quoting who you are talking to it would look like you were just talking to yourself.

Oh wait
Can see where that would be a problem for the unintelligent.

And I know you're looking forward to meeting Serhan The Fan. (By the way, whatever happened to him? I haven't seen a single post of his or one of his ubiquitous "thank you's" in weeks.)

What if you found out that Lavin went to Xavier? :)

Steve Lavin is an exceptionally polarizing figure. At UCLA, his lack of coaching acumen and lazy recruiting insensed fans. So much that when he was hired at St. John's, a full seven years later, Bruin fans took to the Internet with their lingering frustration. It was a cascade of insults, warnings and pity for St. John's who they promised would regret the hire.

Sure enough, five years later, there is no shortage of Johnny fans who share that same rage and disdain for a man who profited from their ticket money and support. The terrible coaching is part of it, but the lazy work ethic and offensive salesmanship is what now infuriate fans on both coasts.

If that were it, we would all agree and move on. The part that makes Lavin polarizing is the often mentioned Kool-Aid factor. While he was lousy at most all of the staple coaching respsibilities, he is a master salesman. Yes, some can see he is a phony. But others remain motivated to defend him given just a sniff of negativity. His charisma truly amazes me.

It wouldn't matter, I've already got plenty of Xavier alum on my shit list :)

Johnny, those UCLA fans were a bunch spoiled babies.

We get it. A few of you guys hate the guy. He's gone. He's now doing his job on TV with our very important partner, the Fox Network. They seem happy with him. He'll probably stay in that job for a long time.

I suggest you turn the sound off when he comes on your TV and focus on the bright future we have with a coach that every one of is fully behind.

That's an acceptable perspective, as UCLA certainly had some real success under Lavin. However, the details of their fans' beef was (in my opinion) a lot like what we saw here.

As for your directive, I am fully aware of my ability to mute and remain incredibly positive about our future. Thanks, though.

One of the best outcomes of Mullin coming back home is that every Johnny fan is united in supporting his efforts. Some of us are having doubts at times during this tough stretch, but the doubters are pulling hard for him.

When it turns around it will be a great time for us.

OLV I suggest you read "why we hate Lavin" which was written by a UCLA blogger in 2011. Their gripes,,expressed so many years after he had been let go, are those same gripes many of us had expressed about his time here. Can two completely different fan bases with 2 completely different perspectives both be wrong? But I will take it a step further; during the Lavin years at UCLA a good friend of mine was very close to the program because of his profession. He was an east coast guy with no ties or allegiance to UCLA. In other words, he was completely impartial. Every negative thing we have heard from the UCLA fan base and now the SJU fan base, I had heard from him back when Lavin's teams were actually winning. His firing at UCLA had so much more than just the result of one bad season and some unrealistic expectations by the fan base. So much more. That is why I was so concerned about his hire. Like he rest of us, his charisma and early success had me believing that he had grown in during his time in the booth. That belief lasted about 2 years. After that, I saw the same Lavin that my buddy and the UCLA fan base saw. Now I gotta get back to cursing at my TV.
