Lavin parting ways with St.John's

I personally would like the mullin hire. Agree, do not want mas, and Jackson will never happen period.

I think Mullin would be an example of "winning the press conference" and may initially help with recruits.

But, how would it be possible for anyone to know if he can coach? I love Mullin, but I sure don't want to see more bad basketball while he learns the ropes. I also don't subscribe to the theory of "just hire a strong assistant". I want my head coach to be a coach.

I think he would be a good coach. He was always a smart player and I feel like he'd do well.

Quite possibly you will be a happy guy then Jack.

Nice! Would love mullin. A risk but i have a good feeling if he was coach he'd pan out well

Risk yes, but maximize chances of success with an outstanding coaching staff sitting next to you. If it's Mullin that will happen.

and maybe a lavin type effect recruiting like when lavin took the job here in the beginning

The cost-cutting, I have direct knowledge of. It is no secret. Many people at the school, including within the athletic department, were offered buyouts in the past two years. As to what they will pay the next coach, that is opinion and speculation.

Nothing gets a school out of financial problems quicker then a successful sports program. They will make the appropriate investment

I'll say this. If their is one candidate that can be a rainmaker with the geriatric part of the fan base it could be Mullin.

SJU plans to do a mailing about leaving SJU in your estate planning if he comes

Yikes! Well, I hope that the SJU administration is evaluating him using more than just "a good feeling". He should be interviewed and asked about offense and defense philosophies. He should also be asked how he will learn an approach to recruiting. Remember he has never been a participant in recruting.

This is a too big of a risk for my taste. I want a proven coach. Not sure why we would put ourselves in such a vulnerable position. We are thinking with our hearts. Remember, the guy's jump shot can't help us anymore.

I think someone else posted the fact that if Mullin had the same career elsewhere, he would not even be a thought. That is the best evidence that fans are dialing back to 1985 and using their hearts to choose the coach.

Also, can't think of an NBA player with no coaching experience that successfully took over a college program.

Will the people asking the questions know the right answers?

They will be talking to a guy who was a GM and asked these questions...he will know the questions and the answers

For the record good feelings are a lot easier to come by when you're 16 than when you're in your 50s/60s. ;)

If on the court results and the recruiting been better, would Lavin had gotten his extension?

My opinion: Without a doubt. They didn't begrudge the money. They didn't want to pay this kind of money to not have a single outstanding season. Both NCAA bid seasons were accentuated by mid BE season runs, and losses in the BET and NCAA without a single good performance. Had he gone to an Elite 8, a sweet sixteen, and had a plus .500 ncaa record, he'd still be here.

Was it his fault that dj Kennedy was hurt in the be game against syracuse? That cost us that game plus a run I the big dance. Remember they changed our seeding due yo his injury.
was it his fault that obekpa smoked pot? They can't watch these idiots 24 hr a day.
is he to blame because jordan was a head case, not to mention harrison's first two hot head years?
was it his fault that Harkness and Sampson jumped to the nba?
I can go on. I don't think the school president has a clue as to what has happened. Now everyone wants mullin? mullin won't be passing or shooting. Living in the past won't bring st johns back. this program is dying fast, if it isn't already dead

We would need a new thread to list all of the excuses.

He pretty much just listed them all. My response to his post is simple:

St John's wants and needs a winning team. With Lavin we won but just not enough when it came to the postseason. The entire Lavin tenure was a lot of bark and not enough bite. And when the recruiting started to disappear, his "strength", it was time to move on.

No it wasn't his fault DJ got hurt and Chris smoked pot. To me the thing I can't get past is we had a roster last year (well I guess 2 years ago) that should have been competing for a final four. I'm not exaggerating, they were good enough, and showed it at times. When we missed the tournament with that roster I knew they'd let Lavin finish out with his seniors but I always had a feeling he'd never be able to make up for that year.

I appreciate what he did for us. He made St. John's an attractive job again. There's a reason mullin is reportedly interested. Lavin made this an attractive place to coach again. I thank him, but it's time to get a coach that can recruit AND then do something with those recruits on the floor.

Has it been reported that he is interested?

I've seen multiple reporters say he is.

I having trouble finding that. Link?

Paultz posted this yesterday but I've seen other tweets I need to find

@JPPelzman: Multiple sources have told me Chris Mullin is very interested in the St. John's job. #sjubb

Can we somehow establish an exact definition of what "source" means, and who is considered a bona-fide source, and who is not? As it stands, the term is thoroughly meaningless.

I knew you'd like my parody of Massiello ("No Mas"), Hutch (we're the "Starsky and Hutch" team, lol).

My concern with a possible Mullin hire would be whether he'd be committed to do this job long term. I feel like the school is asking him to be their savior and that he'd be doing us a favor. While I'd bet he'd be successful if he was here long term, will he want to be? Once he sees what is involved will he want to continue doing it? This program needs stability. We'll never be a consistent winner if we keep changing coaches every 5 years. If Mullin is the hire I hope we have a strong assistant who is good enough to take over if Mullin decides spending his summers in HS gyms is not for him.

I'm starting to think maybe Danny Hurley is our best option.
