SJU fans always leave me shaking my head. We are 4-1 with a chance to be 6-1 (which I fully expect) by the end of this week--after three games against power conference teams. Coach Lavin for the first time is playing with a player he recruited in their third season with him. He doesn't have a single senior that has been with him for the full four seasons. Almost all programs need that kind of returning player to bring the experience, strength, and skill that you need to add to the young guns. I'm too young to remember, but wasn't there a guard--David Cain maybe?--who did very little for three season and then produced a great senior season out of nowhere? That stuff happens every season in every conference. There are dozens of guys who have averages like 2 ppg as a frosh, 4.5 as a soph, and 16 as a junior. Khalif Wyatt of Temple only averaged .5 ppg as a frosh, 10 as a soph, and 17 as a junior, and 20.5 as a senior. We are convinced every kid is going to go to the NBA early, but at the same time threads pop up questioning Lavin's recruiting ability and one even asking if Roberts was a better talent evaluator. How the eff can both of those things be true? How can our roster be barren the next two years because everyone was drafted into the NBA, but, at the same time, Lavin be a terrible recruiter?
Can we just give this coach until March? I'm not even asking to let his first class of players reach their senior year. Just give the man until march. We've lost one damn game to a 7-0 top ten team 2,000 miles away. That game was within four points very late.
