Lavin Commentary Rutgers Game

Villanova fans warmly welcomed Steve Lappas back just last season, and he did a pretty miserable job there.

Yeah Coach Lappas did not meet the expectations of the Nova alums and Administration and was terminated, but you statement that he did "a pretty miserable job" is simply not true.

Lappas coached a Villanova for 9 seasons and won approximately 2/3ds of his games in route to a 174 - 110 record. During his 9 seasons Nova played in the post season 8 times

So no, Lappas' record was not satisfactory to his school but it was far from "pretty miserable".

"Lavin" the one word that when it comes to beat the horse to death for the umpteenth time, is the gift that keeps giving.

Let's look forward and while we're at it, perhaps close this thread.

Yep, you are right. Just like Lavin's UCLA legacy was based more on the high expectations of the program, so was Lappas'. Lappas had 4 NCAA bids in 9 seasons, with 2 first round and 2 second round exits. He was fired after missing the NCAA two seasons in a row and going 8-8 in the Big East. Not good enough, just like Lavin. But he was treated warmly by fans. As should Lavin.

This thread went south real quick

I just visited for the first time and realized the game was over on page one, saw where the conversation was headed and jumped to last page to see where it ended. Main Man's Golum post says it all. Can't imagine what's on the 10 page in between but I'll try, cause I sure ain't reading them.

Sorry thought this was the game thread. SHould have noticed it was taken out of there. I hadn't been on since halftime yesterday so it didn't make sense, nor does another 12 page thread about the ex coach.

Just some stuff about Lavin being an atheist

But you guys keep telling me he's not that smart!

Any thread which has "Lavin" in it's title is going to evoke emotion and fuel debate. Think we all know that by now. For the life of me i still don't get why those who don't like the engagement between the various Lavin factions don't just stay away from the thread? Paul and the mods do a great job of deciding when a thread has run it's course, they certainly don't need your unsolicited suggestions as to when it should be closed down.

I absolutely HATED Steve Lavin as our coach and felt strongly that we waited too long to fire him. That said, I had no problem with his commentary on last night's broadcast. He is a total phony and fraud, but he offended no one and is entitled to make a living.

For the record, he......

1. was an awful coach
2. stopped working while I was still paying for tickets (this is why he is not a "good guy")
3. was incredibly insulting with his post game rubbish
4. did NOT restore the program or "make us relevant" again (see our current roster)

Good luck Slick Steve, but stay the hell away from St. John's Basketball!

How ironic.

Some of y'all should grow up. Y'all have an idea who I'm talking about (unless, you need names).

When I see that the topic is about Lavin and his commentary on the Rutgers game, I expect to see responses tied to the actual game and his commentary, that's why I read the thread. Although I might have overstepped in proposing the topic be closed, I'm by no way a Lavin advocate. Like or not, he's now part of FOX which airs Big East games where he will be speaking about some of our games. I'll take the liberty and start the next topics, "Lavin Commentary Vandy/Indiana/Wake Forest/ Fordham Game" where folks can pile on or just reference previous post related to "Lavin". I for one will comment on the effort and chutzpah that this year team is showing under new leadership.

Keep in mind Lovett and Mussini are Lavin recruits, Brandon Sampson was an SJU commit (10,3 ppg for #22 LSU), and Obekpa was coming back. Not saying was enough to keep his job, but it's not exactly nothing

Beast I do not want to quibble but, it is misleading to say that "Lovett and Mussini were Lavin recruits".

Yeah, the 2 were among the dozens (plural) of players which Lavin and his staff spoke to during the 2015 recruiting cycle but Lavin failed to obtain a commit from either. No one knows whether either LoVett or Missini would have committed play for Lavin.

Sampson verbaled lto Lavin. LSU continued to recruit Sampson after his non binding verbal. People on the LSU board will tell you that Sampson may have "flipped" even if Lavin remained at StJohn's; we will never know.

Yes. Obeka certainly was a "Lavin recruit".

At least one poster here would say the same thing . . . me.

I'm convinced he was flipping anyway, and the firing worked out in Sampson's favor. He didn't look like a bad guy in decommiting under those circumstances.

Setting record straight, Lavin regime, Tony Chiles in particular, worked hard on LoVett recruitment. Re: Sampson, despite LSU board conjecture, he was excited to commit to SJU until Briscoe bailed. That changed both his and Diallo's outlook. Sampson clearly was even more vulnerable to departure once SL left & certainly LSU was working him. This comes from someone who conversed regularly with key members of both camps. As noted often, I was never a SL fan, but what's fair is fair. Time to move on in any event & enjoy development of a solid program under Mullin's direction.

Initially you will see comments tied to the game. And then you will see posts along the lines of "so great to see him at the game. He's such a good guy and he restored our program........". Invariably you will see the counter arguments. You could almost write the script. As time passes and our program flourishes, the mention of Lavin's name will become less and less significant, as it has with other past coaches. But considering the fact that it's just a few months after his tenure here ended, I honestly feel that the reaction on this board is reasonable (with some exceptions) and no different than it would be on any other.

Not a big SL fan either, but the myth that he didn't work at all, especially on this class, is wrong. Diallo, Brisco, Sampson, Lovett, Mussini, and that big Greek center that TIS thought was a lock. By your summary, had Brisco come, we may have had our best recruiting class in a very long time, Lavin would have reloaded, and been safe for another several years. It didn't happen, and that's the way it goes.

In the meantime, I'm just enjoying SJU bball with zero expectations for this year and loving the bright spots and reinvigorated fan base.

"Zero" expectations? That's how I started out, but after seeing some of the talent and heart on this team I have to admit I have elevated my expectations to "minimal" lol
