Lapchick statue initiative

How great would it be if we could kick off our season in our new league with a statue unveiling ceremony prior to our first home game?

We are at the $90K mark. Need approx. $120K-$125K. Very confident we will reach that mark in the near future.

Most likely we will have the statue completed within the next 12 months.

Needles to say we welcome any and all contributions and appreciate the generosity.

Good news. Would be "great news" if we were a lot closer to the goal, but considering how little publicity this has received, $90K is not shabby. (Just think, if Coach Lapchick were as tall -- or is it as short? -- as Looie, the life-sized statue would cost be a lot less. Those 11" or so really add up.)

I was just thinking, as a suggestion to get the last 30k needed to complete this project. I have seen that many memorials, have a brickyard surrounding it, each brick is sold to a donor and engraved with a message of their choice, also things such as a tree or a bench are also available with naming opportunities for donors that reach a certain threshold.

The mets have done something similar:

Hope this helps, best of luck!

Apparently we are not the only ones with this idea. UConn is planning something similar for Jim Calhoun according to their fan board. I'd love it if we get ours done first.

The bricks are something to consider. $500 a brick and you have your name (or someone you wish to honor) immortalized on campus at a site that will become a magnet for students and visitors. 60 participants and you have the 30K (plus installation fee if any) .

You can put your name or someone else's (son, daughter, father, mother) and, if à propos, the year they graduated from SJU. You can comfortably fit 2-3 names on a standard brick. I know. I've done it elsewhere.

The only problem is what do you do about those who have already contributed - some most generously.

Perhaps they could all be accommodated with the proper design.

Just a thought JJJ.

You can donate by check or online. Checks must be made payable to St. John's University and sent to Kevin P. Barry, Associate Director of Athletic Development, St. John's University, 8000 Utopia Pkwy, University Center, Suite B, Queens, NY 11439

You can also donate online by going to www.stjohns.edu/give athletics and chose "Other" for the designation and then Lapchick Statute.

The statute idea is getting popular, just saw on cbssports that Mizzou has done the same thing honoring Norm Stewart.

I think it was Penn State that had to deal with statutes, the limitations of them.

Missouri might do a statue.

If we don't raise enough, we might have to do a statuette. :)

Uconn's is more of a statue/fountain that's going to have alcohol flowing out of it

Was disappointed that the most recent alumni quarterly didn't mention the effort to raise funds for this long-overdue tribute to Coach Lapchick. I had emailed the editor in chief right after the 21 Club launch party, asking her to bring it to the attention of our alums -- most of whom, I'd guess, have no idea about the statue -- but, again, no mention of it at all (unless it was buried deep somewhere). Maybe someone on this board who has an in with the quarterly's editors can get them to publicize this effort.

Honestly, this school's administration leaves so much to be desired it's ridiculous. Even if they had decided not to print it, a competent administrator would have followed up with you and let you know the status. There is a good reason we have fallen to the dregs of large Catholic Universities - they cut corners everywhere, including the talent that runs the school.

I am delighted to share that the statue is expected to be unveiled on campus this coming Spring.

Appreciate all who have made this possible.

Details will follow.

This is great news. For those who were not able to attend the dinner, it is worth repeating how much credit & thanks JSJ deserves for spearheading this and more importantly making this happen. Hopefully there will be another type of "celebration" in the spring which involves nets being cut down of some type :cheer:
