Knicks

So we are interested in a coach under contract who will require compensation to get. I don’t get it knowing we have minimal draft capital to begin with. This was why we had to fire Thibs so quickly? As others have said, if this will lead to Giannis, maybe I get it but I thought they had a better plan then hoping to get someone else’s coach who is under contract.

Should we have talked to Kidd while Thibs is under contract?

No and if Kidd was the guy they identified right away, go for it. But are we really in a position to give up draft capital for a coach with no guarantee they will even get him? And is Kidd a slam dunk upgrade over Thibs? These are rhetorical questions of course but giving up assets for a coach when we have minimal draft capital to begin with doesn’t seem the smartest move but what do I know. Rose and his team get paid handsomely to make these decisions so I will sit back and let it play out and hopefully they hit a home run and a year from now, the Knicks are in the Finals.

Yes, but if there is any league that has complicated and convoluted rules for trades and FA signings, it is the NBA.

As it stands, the Knicks do not have many picks to trade. However, would anyone be surprised if Rose is somehow able to recoup a bunch in a trade(s) and then package them for both Kidd and Giannis?

I think this has been brewing for a while now, in particular Giannis. He has been open about being unhappy in Milwaukee. And NBA superstars more often than not, force their current team to trade them to their desired destination.

He can just refuse to sign a new deal with another team, which puts Milwaukee bad spot.

A lot of the reporting point to dysfunction with the team. Players gave negative feedback to the FO/owners. Thibs is notoriously stubborn. Should they have kept him, knowing that the team is having trouble to develop chemistry and they don't like some of his ways? I don't really buy that.

I also think we have more leverage in this particular situation. Is Dallas really going to keep Kidd if he doesn't want to be there? Nico never hired Kidd, and the prior ownership was there when Kidd was hired. He's also losing half of his assistants, potentially losing another, and he is pissed about the Luka deal + losing their Sports Medicine guy to .. the Knicks last offseason.

I don't think there will be leaks about us backchanneling to Kidd's people, but doesn't it seem implausible that this is coming out and the Mavs haven't squashed it yet? I also don't think it will cost much, and if the FO thinks Kidd can get us over the top + make the team develop more chemistry, I'm for it. Also think we may shake up the roster more than we'd think.

Well, there's really only one player who you could look at and say "that's the new piece that soured team chemistry" now isn't there?

And whose idea was it to acquire that player?

Certainly zero chemistry issues with the guys who were on the team last year, quite the opposite.

I’d say two. Bridges and KAT.

I also do think the front office deserves blame, especially with the Bridges trade and how much they gave up. But you know as much as I do that the coach gets fired first

Giannis wouldn’t shock me. I met him like 2 years ago at the stock exchange. He was launching an etf through a fund company and he hung out after the market close. He’s a very nice guy and humble. Had a lot of interest in finance. Asks a lot of questions total down to earth guy

Very funny I also met him last year while in Greece and he was super friendly. We were in a pool together and I asked him what he’d think about joining Knicks because we’re so close to the top. Naturally he told me “I think we are close too” and that he absolutely loves NY but isn’t crazy about the ownership and taxes implications lol.

Really took the time to explain it all to me while swimming with our kids no less. A lot could change though, this was 10 months ago and their situation has gotten pretty dire in Milwaukee.

Dolan involvement makes me x1000 less excited
No. This can’t be. I was assured that this was strictly a Leon Rose decision. 🙄 Dolan gonna Dolan. It’s who he is.

I mean just check out the lack of a plan. Jason Kidd. Hahahaha. The Mavs apparently denying a meeting. So the the Knicks really going to hire a first time coach and tell us how good he’s going to be?

Sadly and comically classic Dolan. Last years Knick team was very root worthy; despite the playoff success, this years, not so much.
Also, if a teams executive “leadership” needs post season player “interviews” to discover player “complaints”, they are either woefully incompetent or trying to foister a PR dog and pony show. I this case probably both.
Unfortunately, the Knicks replaced warriors with better stats but not better players.

Post season player interviews are common in many sports

Liked guys like Donte & Hartensstein, but this team went further and were slightly better

In fairness to the Knicks - who make no mistake I am furious with:

1. They could not keep Hartenstein, who I loved for their team.

2. Robinson was out with no reliable timetable to return.

3. Playing small ball with Randle and Achiuwa is not what Thibs wants to do.

I thought there were options out there that they could pursue. Walker Kessler was top of the wish list. Clint Capela, maybe. Paul Reed, even.

I have no idea how hard they pursued any of those options which would have helped temp through in a way more similar to last year until Robinson returned.

But instead they decided to get Towns, who Rose loves and to whom there is the incestuous NBA connection that has become common for this Knicks organization.

Now, on the face of it giving Thibs the worst defensive big in the league and taking the approach that the offense would make up for it was not an A plus match. And as it turned out, it wasn't.

So now they have fired Thibs because the moves they made - which essentially kneecapped him before the season started - were not ones that were compatible with his coaching.

The question is whether, if you give the next guy the same roster, he will do more with it than Thibs did.

Unless that guy is Spoelstra, my view is "hahaha no," even if they want to go in a different direction and try to outscore people and worry less about playing defense.

And I am starting to believe that unless there is a Giannis move in the offing, which is unlikely, the next guy will in fact have pretty much the same roster or a similar one. Because absent getting Giannis, Towns will probably be here and I do not think he is salvageable on the defensive end.

The only thing they can do is use the mid level slot or trade Josh Hart to try to get another 5 to pair with Mitch and hide Towns at the 4, which is basically what Minnesota did.

But no way is any of this on Thibs.
