Keeping Up With Old Friends Thread

Just think how good Johnnies may have been if David Jones, averaging 21ppg for 10th ranked Memphis, AJ Storr averaging 15ppg for 11th ranked Wisconsin and one particular JUCO showed up this year. Have to believe they would have been significant players on this years squad.

David Jones just got hot (midway thru the second half) to help memphis take the lead over Kolby King’s Tulane squad.

Kolby is acquitting himself well so far too.

Editors note within a couple seconds of pressing send David Jones misses a questionable 3 and Kolby bricks two from the line. I may be a jinx!

Jones had a very strong game but had a very strange defensive play with 2:20 left; with Memphis up a point out of a timeout, Tulane had the ball under their basket and Jones completely ran away from his man in the corner. Tulane inbounded to the man who hit a wide open uncontested 3 to put Tulane up 2.

May have had a CMA/STJ flashback

I don't know anything about him Dink. You got the info?
I've known him since he was about five or six years old. He and my son played on a pretty good middle school team as 7th graders (sadly, they were poorly coached). Jones has always been "big for his age" type of kid, but was skillful. He started playing varsity basketball as an 8th grader at my alma mater, and played there up until his senior year in high school when he ended up at Sunrise Academy in Kansas.

Frankly, I thought he would've been better off playing football as well as basketball, but thought long-term he was better off playing football. Maybe I was wrong (who knows), as he may find himself in the NBA. I never thought I'd utter "NBA" and his name in the same breath. I presumed he'd be a career player overseas (which isn't bad).

I'm super happy for him, as he's a very good kid who's humble and has loads of manners. I last saw and spoke to him two years ago, and of course wished him well at Weber State (as he was going into his second season).

He won't wow you with his athleticism, but he plays smartly as he's a true point forward (ie, handles the ball, sees the floor, rebounds, scores). If the Johnnies has room for him next season; I'd take him.

Its a tough break especially with Storr (who was offered to stay) but its not a guarantee they would have all thrived here at the same time with this team and RIck's coaching style/system. We just have to trust he is putting his system in place and you will see within the next couple years he will get more of his "program building blocks" . I think this year is closest to resembling Lavin's "redemption team" first year team. Yes, these are new players (except Joel), but much of them are older with alot of experience that want that one last shot to make a run with a few younger ones sprinkled in.
