Keeping Up With Old Friends Thread

Shawnelle Scott is coaching high school basketball at John Jay Campus High School/PSAL in Brooklyn. On November 18th Shawnelle is running a basketball clinic for 4th through 8th graders ($50 donation to benefit his John Jay team). He has been coaching there for about 9 years. I've met him in the local bagel shop near the school, still a nice guy and well liked by the bagel guys,
Shawnelle coached my son's friend at the Beacon school a number of years ago. One of the other coaches was Harry Streep, Meryl's brother. He's now the principal there I believe. The kids all loved Shawnelle.

A little trivia, Meryl Streep’s given name is Mary, which apparently was her Mom‘s name, her grandmother‘s, maybe her great great mother’s, etc. She was called Meryl early on and it just stuck.

The reality of Posh’s departure is still a bit shrouded in mystery, but I fall on the side of believing him when he said he “didn’t feel wanted.” IMO, the first job of a new coach---even a hall-of-famer---is to honor the three years of talent, heart and blood a kid like that put into our program. And as a practical matter, when Butler comes to town, Jenkins and Dingle may find Posh a bit tougher than the point guards, say, of Marist, Stony Brook, Brown or Columbia…..

The real question is, what does not feel wanted mean? Did he expect a guaranteed starting role? Aside from a great defensive presence, Pitino wanted shooters and a PG with a great handle neither of which Posh had. I’m sure Pitino offered him the same opportunity he offered everyone else….the opportunity to earn playing time. If Posh saw that as being unwanted then I’m glad he chose to leave. I disagree with the idea of Pitino owing Posh anything other than what he offered everyone else, again, the opportunity to earn playing time.

Pitino and Mas imo vetted the roster from skill perspective re his two main requisites, shooting ability and defending. It was clear they also looked at chemistry issues and meeting off court responsibilities. Joel made the cut and unfortunately fan favorites like Posh did not.

Pitino took the risk of wholesale change and seems to be succeeding, although the bottom line is winning. He knows the clock is ticking on his career and took a bold step and based on his track record it is hard to bet against him. At first blush he assembled a team with solid experience, shooting capability, sharing ball interest sprinkling in some younger guys w great potential. So far, so good & results will be true barometer. Beat Michigan.

Here was one of your last posts from early May: "Easily recruited over??!!’ Post something like that when we land a player of Posh’s caliber…."

I like Posh (I like him a whole lot) and even nicknamed him "Post the Pest" during his time at St. John's. I wish him well at Butler and hope he does well except when he plays against us.

I noticed you've been conspicuously absent throughout the recruiting hauls and I think we've grabbed someone who is better than Posh in both Jenkins and Dingle.

Didn't see it posted but

Posh started for Butler and had 13 pts and 8 assists against Eastern Michigan.

Dylan started for SH at 2G and has 10/3/2 against St. Peter's in a win.

I hope both of them have great seasons. I hope Daniss and Dingle have better ones.

What about his departure is shrouded in mystery? Wasn't it reported on here that Pitino asked him to show up for a meeting and he went to Atlantic City instead?
