Keeping Up With Old Friends Thread

Steve Lavin's San Diego team is now 3-5 (one of those wins was a 5 point win against a non D1 school named Marian), is 297th on KenPom and projected to go 8-23 this year. Not an easy place to win but he's probably fully mailed it in there like he did at the tail end of his tenure here. Just stealing money from that school as his last hurrah before going back to TV for good.

Tom Abatemarco was assistant in the 1978-79 season (he had replaced Mahoney). And he was head coach in some college teams.

More recently he was an assistant with Pitino in Iona.

I see that resume, and the first thing that comes to mind, is that he is "the Larry Brown of assistant coaches."

Seems like he's more of a victim of the portal. Won 18 games last year and lost his top scorers to USC, San Diego St, UC Santa Barbara and Rutgers
Yeah, that’s not unique to teams at that level now though. Locally, teams like Hofstra, Stony Brook, and pretty much the entire MAAC are losing their top players every year now.

Could be just bad luck that he jumped back in just before these new rules became the norm but he’s going to have to adapt now.

Last night I went to an Italian restaurant in downtown Sarasota wearing a south Florida university tshirt. In walks dick vitale and his wife. I thanked dick for his many kind words for sju and coach lou throughout the years. he hands me a brochure on an upcoming charity fund raiser that he is supporting. His wife then starts mentioning sju alumni and asks if I know them. They both were very cordial and pleasant

How are these for deep cuts, Cruz Davis has really taken strides forward under Speedy Claxton and was a key in my +145 win over Norfolk State! Less surprisingly Walter Clayton is playing lights out for UF. What is surprising is the respect UF is getting nationally. I'm not convinced, but maybe I'm wrong.
