So, last year just about anyone on this site would have taken Kadary on our team, but now some on here assess him as too slow, can’t shoot, can’t dribble, can’t pass, etc. Hmmmm…same player guys? First team all BE, but not good enough for us? Let’s take a breath.

Maybe he’s having a hard time adjusting early on to Pitino’s system. Sound familiar? He did have an awful game today and has struggled at times so far. And it’s baffling that he’s shooting half as well from the free throw line this year as last year. But I trust that he’ll get more and more comfortable and will return to his averages. Let’s cut the guy a break.

Yesterday we’re applauding the fans who supported Zuby in warmups vs UVA after that tough loss to Baylor, and now many on here are ripping Kadary and this team. I like the fanbase I saw yesterday a lot better. This team is good and will be fine, despite the awful collective shooting day we had today. I’m a fan of this team and root for them to succeed. That won’t change because we had one bad game.

Oh, and as for sitting Smith, yes that made no sense. Coach is human and made a mistake. He’ll adjust as he always does.

Yeah, so let’s turn this into a Kumbaya, Pollyanna site! How dare anyone talk about what they are seeing on the court. How can Richmond give any effort when he doesn’t understand the system? He’ll hustle once he understands the plays and gets in shape. Personally, I’ll say the team is good when they play that way.
And NO ONE is not rooting for the team. You are confusing honesty with dislike and they are two entirely different things. If you think the team is good and will be fine, no problem, that is your view and you are obviously entitled to it. But me, I have been watching this Groundhog Day for years, predictions of “this is the year, we are going to be great”, get off to a mediocre start and “don’t worry, we are really good, there’s no problem”, until reality sets in and it’s “just wait until next year”.
Now, is this year over, of course not, far from it. BUT, IMO, there is certainly no reason for blind optimism, other than blind optimism.
You want to know the voice we should all be listening to, the player at the podium after the game who had to admit, the other team “just wanted it more than us”. Seven games into the season, lack of effort and desire led to a loss against an inferior but hungrier team. Think about that and then think about the HOF coach who benched a player who made some mistakes but doesn’t lack for effort to play a player who looks for all the world like he doesn’t give a damn. And then defends it by throwing out BS about wanting more shooting.

Not looking to turn this into a Pollyanna site at all. I was just as pissed at yesterday’s play and outcome as anybody else on here. And I didn’t make any point that said don’t comment on what you’re seeing on the court. So let’s not make this out to be more than it is.

My point was about generalizing as to Kadary’s skill set based on 7 games (some of which he actually played very well in) and ignoring all of his previous college results as if he doesn’t have the ability to perform, not to mention at BE first team levels. That’s naive and myopic imo. And bringing up St John’s past and all our suffering really has nothing to do with this team and this coach…they’ll succeed or fail on their own, and not because our fanbase hasn’t seen a consistent winner in 20 years.

As for blind optimism, my post was hardly that. I said give him a break and let him adjust to the system. We saw Dingle, Ledlum and others struggle in the first half of last year and some fans buried them, before they played much better in the 2nd half when comfortable with what they were asked to do. I’ll put my trust (or blind optimism ) in Pitino and Kadary to get it right because they’ve done it before. If others want to bury them now after 7 games, feel free.

Hell, even this year’s team is being handled differently than last years with him cutting back on skills development in favor of team chemistry development. Time will tell if it will work better than last year’s approach.

Nobody is burying anyone, nobody. Blind optimism is “this team is good and will be fine” which is an opinion of the future occurrences which you are obviously entitled to but based on what if not blind optimism? It is an optimistic prediction of the future, to which we are all blind. You took it as a criticism, I meant it as a pretty succinct definition of what you were doing.
Second, no one ever said Richmond doesn’t have skills, the critical comments were for lack of effort that you turned into a skills criticism.
Finally, I comment on the here and now, I don’t ever make predictions nor project what I see in a given game to the next game and certainly not to project a season result. I played and coached too many years to succumb to that nonsense.
So, I comment on Pitino with what I HAVE SEEN for 40 games, with what I saw Thursday through Sunday and I never once in all my comments and criticisms projected my opinions or analysis forward. The man’s career speaks for itself but that does not mean I will sugarcoat my thoughts on what I am seeing. Disagree, fine, that is what this board should be about but don’t just use past history to project on the here and now because I don’t buy it. Tell me what you are seeing and why you disagree.
Finally, to emphasize the point, I have never once to my knowledge, (I have a lot of posts through the years), ever said or intimated that what I have seen and commented on is in any way, shape or form a predictor of what I think is going to happen. Others at times have assumed that was part of my points and it wasn’t and isn’t.

I can see second guessing Anderson, Lavin, Mullin. But turning on a HOF coach because you think you know better even though you are not at practice, and don’t know what is going on, is nuts.
Your alleged lack of hustle is due to playing three games and 2 over times in 64 hours. Tired legs. Equals a step slow. Means missed jump shots. I was sitting courtside. To say these guys were not giving every effort is just plain untrue. And it does them a grave injustice.
It may not have been on tv, but I saw Richmond battling on boards and hitting the floor.
Whoever scheduled the Ga game did team a disservice. They did not even have time to practice on Atlantis court. Difficult optics. Ballroom ceiling lights. Court laid over ballroom tiles. A leak mid court from AC system in ceiling. Ga practiced on court for three days and played a full game on it. Little details make a difference.

Our press was very effective. You can’t press successfully unless every player is hustling. Ga had 24 turnovers. That does not happen without a team effort putting on intense pressure.
It’s early boys, let’s not start turning on our players. Let it play out. We will be fine.

Then play our "vaunted" bench, and not guys that are hurting, as Dunlap clearly was.

All fair points, although some did post questioning his skills, which I took issue with. My post on that point clearly wasn’t directed at you. As for what I’m seeing, there was plenty before yesterday’s game. The team was playing fairly well for the early part of the season sharing the ball, shooting well most games, rebounding, creating turnovers…many of the things I wanted to see. We all know that yesterday they couldn’t put the ball in the ocean, but I’m not going to ignore what we saw before that game. I’m calling that a poor shooting game, but we’ll see if it was an aberration or a norm.

Sadly now there is a number attached to players. Not just the accolades of 'top transfer' or 'pre-season All American'. Whether you think its good or bad its now a professional sport and if players don't perform there are no more kid gloves.

Would be interested to see if Pitino uses him more in a "booty ball" style a la Jalen Brunson and what Illinois did last year with Marcus Domask and what Wyoming did with Hunter Maldonado a few years ago. Basically have him back down his defender and run the offense around that.

He has the size and athleticism to bully smaller defenders and score through them or force help. If they put a bigger guy on him to counteract his back downs thats when he can face up and drive by them. He's certainly a good enough passer to be able to pass out of these too.

The only downside would be that this system works best when there are shooters on the floor around him which we don't have but I still think it could work with the personnel we have with a few wrinkles.

The couple times this year Kadary backed down his defender on the block he ended up getting good looks for himself. Wouldn't mind seeing this get implemented slowly going forward

Make sense and I think he did some of that at SHU. It would hopefully get him going and give us a high % option when we absolutely need a bucket

Well the 2nd title was this century, no? And while I agree he contributed to both losses, so did the players who didn’t make plays at key times. He has shown an ability to adapt, as all great coaches do. We’ll see if he does so here or if his stubbornness gets the best of him.

If ability to adapt means changing starting line ups than I'd agree. If it's adjusting in game strategy to no blow double digits leads both this year and last, I just don't see it.

I don't care if he turns the ball over driving. I do care if he turns the ball over with careless passes or dribbling. I still think he is going to be almost impossible for teams to handle in the last few minutes of each half. He draws so much contact and he stresses defenses.

He can take anyone 1 on 1. He needs to recognize the double and pass out. When he passes, he usually does so exceptionally well. He has made some lazy passes, though, and those have to stop.

That is exactly how Seton Hall won so many close games last year.
