Julian Champagnie
I think he can run the floor, defend, has a pretty good handle and mid range jumper for his size, and plays under control. He is one of these kids that can quietly fill a box score and his value can go beyond stats.
Yeah, I agree.

The biggest hope I have for him is one more growth spurt. He'd be one of the best centers we've had here in decades, and it would relieve a ton of pressure on recruiting. It's not asking too much, right?

He could still grow and he still wouldn’t be a center. I mean we could always line him against their center... clearly a stretch forward though.

Different set of skills, but reminds me a lot of DJ Kennedy. Came in under the radar and exceeded expectations from the start. Going to be an excellent long term player for SJU. Great late addition by CMA and staff.

The thing I'm most excited about with Champ other than the fact he has 3 more yrs to develop still, is his inside skills offensively. He has a nice little hook here and there that goes in with some nice touch around the rim. He can be a true inside-out threat by the time he's a senior. Seems like the type of kid a Jay Wright would get out of nowhere and turn them into a stud. Though the season struck midnight and kinda turned into a pumpkin after the insane OOC, I have to say that there is no drama with this staff and no drama with this team. All players seem to be on the same page and the only exception is Steere who will no doubt transfer anyway. It seems like the kids genuinely like each other and there is some chemistry there. Even compared to last year, I remember tons of balls thrown away, players with their hands up confused, missed alley-oops, etc. That was a very experienced team. To have lots of inexperienced guys here who have some chemistry already is a good sign IMO. I know I've been critical, but after the big win vs. Creighton I do have more hope for next year since much more talent and depth is coming. If LJ comes back and we find one 6'10+ 240+ lb center for next year, I will be really excited.

The abundance of those blown alley-oops used to drive me crazy, especially the many times when there was zero chance of making them to begin with.

Don’t disagree but I see more Brownlee. For much of the same reasons you just mentioned but I see brownlee and Julian as both more inside-out where DJ was outside-in.
I may be mistaken, but didn't Brownlee play more of the role of a center with decent offensive skills? I thought of him as a big, and don't see Julian that way at all.

St. John's Julian Champagnie is the Big East Freshman of the Week.

St. John's Julian Champagnie now averaging 9.2 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.2 steals and shooting 44 percent from field. Should make Big East all-rookie team I would think. #sjubb

Zach B
Remember when Dave from JJ said Champagnie was more suited to play at a mid major and was a huge reach by CMA? Good times.
A blind dog could better evaluate talent.
Truly one of the funniest posts I have read in a very long time.

I've said this all year. If Julian were on a winning team, he'd be viewed as "the difference", that talented, but not super talented player, who makes all the hustle plays, is intelligent, and is the type of player who makes good teams great, even with just marginal scoring.

On our team though, putting up the same numbers, doing the same things, he comes across as one notch below great, who, if he could up his averages even a little bit, could have seen us be on the bubble this year.

We have a lot of guys like that. We need an "alpha dog", to get us to the next level, and then players like Julian can compliment that, IMO.

He started as our pseudo 5 but played next to Burrell and Evans quite a bit. I disagree with fuchsia, he was definitely a face up forward. Champaigne, though absolutely not a center, has played some there as well.

I definitely see Champ as an around the rim guy as well. He battles down low constantly for rebounds and putbacks

Julian is just a very flexible player capable of playing multiple positions, quite an advantage. I expect his shooting, defense and lateral quickness to continue to improve via rigorous training & skill development program this summer. Again, rehabbing an injury precluded that last summer. Great instincts, nose for the ball & rebounding skill will really help SJU going forward. He has a very solid base to build on.

FYI, his brother Justin leads Pitt in scoring and rebounding. (12.3 & 7.4) Talented duo.

And it was only like two years ago where people who really know basketball didn't think he could play at a high major. He's really come a long way and it's exciting to see how far he'll go.

Had a nice game tonight. Hope to see him keep getting better.

I have a relative that was just heavily recruited by Pitt. Their athletic facilities, he said, were incredible. I'd be more concerned that Julian studies too hard and is a grad transfer there. :) just kidding. Kind of.
