Josh Roberts Injury

I'm glad Roberts had the surgery. He can start the long road back to full recovery.

The hospitals are cancelling elective surgery because of the Coronavirus. That could have delayed Roberts for a couple months.

If the surgery was for a fully torn rotator cuff or labrum, the procedure is relatively safe, but the recovery will take months and the physical therapy somewhat painful. If it was only a partial tear, it's a much easier and speedier recovery. I've had both.[/quote]

If the surgery was to repair a torn rotator cuff, Roberts won’t be returning to basketball until after the season starts. If it was for a labrum/debridement, then he should be able to return to basketball before the season starts. Based on the sling he is wearing, it looks to be the latter.

I can only say that when I had surgery for a full tear of the rotator cuff, the doctor had to make a 2" - 3" incision, but for the partial tear, he used the less invasive scope method, and I had a far less painful rehab. An athlete at his age should be ready for season provided he does his therapy.

I had surgery planned for this past Monday but received a call the day before it was cancelled. Glad he got in and out prior to the cancellations.

Dang, wish him the best and a speedy recovery.

I watched the game video of Roberts injury. There wasn't any hard contact. Looked like his arm got knocked around. That's pretty common with several people reaching up high for the ball.

I wonder if he already had a partial tear before the game?

Saw my orthopedist on Monday, new tear of left rotator cuff (total rebuild of right using arthroscopy in 2009). Don't need surgery and current plan is to use exercise program he gave me, with PT post virus. Good luck to Josh.

I am a Physical Therapist who also has had experience having shoulder surgeries on myself as well so I can report from both sides of the spectrum.

As a basketball player, Josh has plenty of time and the school resources available to him. He will be more than ready to go for next season, barring any setbacks of course. Its a good 8 months until the start of the season. If he was a baseball player then return to sport would be a little longer.

Good luck!!! If you have any questions ask away. The PT is definitely different than post surgery especially the first couple months. Did the doctor give you a grade of your new tear on left?

Good luck to you, too. Avoid the surgery, if possible

I've been talking about Roberts surgery with friends. It seems like he should seriously consider Redshirting next season.

1. He's undersized and needs to bulk up with more muscle. He can't lift a lot of weights this summer.

2. Josh needs to improve his shot. Same problem. His shoulder rehab comes first.

McGriff had his surgery last August. He's got time to work in the weight room and refine his game. I expect a lot from him next season.

Josh can play next season. He has time for healing and rehab. But, I don't expect much improvement over last season. His shot may be even worse.

Should Josh Roberts consider Redshirting next season? Spend the time bulking up and improving his game?

I understand sitting out a season will be a hard decision. I suspect he'll ride the bench if he plays. Coach Anderson has new talent coming in and I doubt Josh will start over any of them.

I think he should save his eligibility and train for 2021.

I think the answer to that question is : How is his arm next season . If he’s 100 % healed, even though he can’t lift weights this summer, suit him up next year. He could work on gaining weight , his legs and core this summer.

If we get a transfer 1 yr. big who can be effective, then I think this may not be a bad idea. Of course, it's up to Josh and the staff.

If he redshirts I believe he still takes up a scholarship which hurts because we’re short on bigs to begin with.

Ugh, gotta get surgery on my own shoulder in May. Hopefully it’s still on. Recovery gonna suck.

We are short on bigs but our best lineup last year was with duke/penny at the 4/5 spots. Now we have this 6’10 monster coming in but if coach mike found something with the duke/penny big lineup, that might be the way we go.

Monster? In what sense?

I saw a highlight where he passed it to himself off the backboard and slammed it down. It was athletic and scary and the dude looked like a monster.
