Josh Roberts in Portal

Josh seems like model teammate. Never looked to be pouting or giving less than 100%. If we filled frontcourt spots and he still wanted to play a limited role here I think it would be great. But can see why he wants a different place to play. Even if he got 20+ minutes here next year he’s not gonna get touches. And if he did I’m not sure that would be a good thing for us.

I think if the role he played this year as a starter was instead as a 10mpg backup, he could be really effective. Because our front court is so slim, his loss isnt nothing, but his production is something that can be found.  He got double digit minutes in 45 games at sju, he scored double figures 4 times and had more than 5 boards 16 times.

Good luck to Josh whatever he decides to do.

With Josh leaving the door open for a return, it almost sounds like CMA said "you explore your options and we'll explore ours, and we'll see where things end up". I do hope he returns, he seems like a good kid and I'm worried about all the roster turnover, but I honestly don't see him getting many more minutes next year than he got this year. Not if we are going to be an improved team. If he is looking for more PT, a change or scenery would be the right move for him. Wish him the best whatever he decides.

Totally agree with what you posted earlier Monte. The thing that bothers me is the CMAs system takes a while to learn for newcomers (as we have seen the past 2 seasons slow starts and 1-5 start in conference play this year). His system thrives on continuity from players coming back and knowing what to expect from him as a coach and his system. I know its crazy now due to the transfer rule but I feel these losses do hurt us. We have some new talent coming in but have to replace dunn, moore, cole, and now roberts. This program needs some stability.

And Paultz says it's likely one more player(McGriff?) is gone. That means that since the start of this season, 7 players will have left. Granted Toro and Dunn graduated, and granted we want to upgrade the talent, but that's still a lot of kids for any program. Let alone a program with a system which takes a while to learn.

I think that we already have our replacement for Roberts, in Stanley and Traore.  They’re both around the same size and none of them including Robert’s, are centers.  We really just need to add an actual center at this point.

He grossly underachieved. Three years and no improvement.

If your question is getting kids to commit or getting a signed NLI before a scholarship spot opens up for them is illegal/not illegal the answer is it is not.

Room112 post=427534
I am one of the people who says that. But I come from a place of wondering if can you actually go over the limit with scholarships, with the assumption kids will leave, or do you have to wait for someone to leave before giving out a scholarship. I'm just unclear on how that works.

Believe it is you just have to be at the limit at the start of the next school year whenever classes start.

The usage of Roberts was puzzling to me. He would start the majority of the games and then would get subbed out and never return again. This even occurred once Toro stopped being used. It definitely seemed like CMA only wanted one big in the game and Moore was the far better offensive player but a liability on defense. So either Roberts was still hurt or CMA preferred smaller better all around players like Earlington or Wusu. There were times where it seemed like having Roberts in the game could have helped us.
I wish Josh the best if he decides to leave and hope he finds the right spot to develop his game and earn his degree.

Shouldn't be puzzling at all if you were watching the games.  The players that produced the most played the most simple as that.  And I'm not trying to bash Roberts, but he missed a lot of easy shots, didn't rebound well for his size, and was prone to picking up silly fouls, those are just facts.  I have no idea how anybody watched him and thought he was a major contributor.  The only reason Roberts started was because Moore got in trouble and then when he came back he was playing well off the bench so CMA kept him in that role.

Think of it like this, Moore was butting heads with CMA and was in the dog house and he still played way more than Roberts, that should tell you all you need to know right there.  If Roberts was close to Moore in what he could bring to the table, CMA would have gladly given him Moore's minutes.  Coaches wanna win they put the best players on the floor.

The worst part is we aren't even asking for a hall of famer. If Lamont Hamilton or Shawnelle Scott-type guys walked through our doors we'd immediately be collecting funds for their bronze statues outside our arena.
Complaining about a guy not getting more playing time that averaged 2 PPG 2 RPG as a starter and as a junior isn't clouded judgement it's delusion. /media/kunena/emoticons/grin.png

I gotta give it to Josh though he's got the biggest fan base of any 2 PPG player I've ever seen in my life.  There's people right now getting hammered on twitter for suggesting this wasn't a big loss.  I thought about saying something, but I didn't want them all to jump on me /media/kunena/emoticons/cheerful.png

He was actually easy to locate on Twitter. His birth name is Makingston Playsworth III. And he's rich.

LJSA going to the Maher school of humor...;-)

Unlike many kids, Roberts was given a shot by 2 coaches to play starter minutes and did not perform well enough to keep in the rotation.   At a lower level he should perform well.  At this level he wasn't effective enough.

I guess it depends on what your definition of starter minutes are.  Roberts only averaged 10mins/game.  In games he played 15+ mins this season, he averaged 4.3 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. In comparison, Earlington averaged 6.8 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. So the difference between the two is about 3 points per game. And that is not a bash on Earlington, but he is the only player on the roster that could be a fair comparison.

The problem with Roberts is that he never had that breakout 15-20pt game.

And the reason for that was he was almost always in foul trouble.

Foul trouble kept Robert’s on the bench for many games but if he played forty minutes a game he is not scoring fifteen to twenty points a game. He just doesn’t have the offensive skills to provide any scoring.

Roberts wasn't capable of giving us anything on the offensive end. He seemingly has not developed any offensive moves. And if you notice, the team never passed to him in the post. All of his points came on offensive rebounds and put backs, or being at the right spot under the basket for a pass.

That's not his job or his skill set, his job was/is to anchor the defense, rebound, block shots,  cleanup offensive rebounds and score on an assortment of alley-oops, put backs and chippies.  At times he showed flashes, at other times he was inconsistent or disappeared, or was out with, or recovering from injuries.  He really hasn't had a chance.  I hope he comes back healthy and motivated next year, I'd be happy with 18+ minutes a game from him.

He’s not coming back. None of them. Once you make that decision, you have to own it.  That’s how Coach A rolls.
