Josh Roberts in Portal

So, I'm guessing this is the current depth chart...

G - Posh / (Transfer) / McGriff
G - (Transfer) / Pinzon
G - Williams / Wusu
F - Champ / Earlington / Traore
F - (Transfer) / Nywie / Stanley

I think you are close but I am leaning towards this:

G- Posh / (Transfer) / Mcgriff
G- Williams / Wusu
SF - Champ / Pinzon
PF - Earlington / Traore
F/C - (Transfer) / Nywie / Stanley

I'm active on a few different message boards, and this one by far is the most tame,

I hope those are not other St. John's boards.

That said, I too had wished Roberts could have thrived here.  I think his injuries--particularly the shoulder one--may have stunted his progress both on the court and within CMA's system.  I wish him well.

Depends on who the transfers are, how existing players progress, and how ready Pinzon is.  I could easily see McGriff ahead of the next point guard and either Wusu or Pinzon ahead of the next wing.

But we definitely need more competition at center/power forward, and more depth, that's for sure.

Who they add to hopefully shore up interior is anyone’s guess, but staff knew Josh was likely entering portal. I expect one more, but we’ll see. In any event we will have solid nucleus, but as many have noted, getting competent big is missing link.

Knowing it would happen and not minding it are two different things. He could be a solid experienced contributor as a big. This doesn't make the staff look good in my eyes.

The timing of Robert’s move is strange because right now he is the only big man returning along with Nywie. Since most transfers are done for the promise of more minutes does this indicate Nywie is good enough to earn the major minutes or Robert’s is aware of some future arrival. Or am I thinking too much about this transfer.

Respectfully disagree on McGriff

Highly doubt CMA ever plays Champ at the 3 spot.  I watched just about every game over the past 2 years and I can't recall him ever playing him there, he's not one known to change a guys position after 2 years, at least I've never seen him do that.  CMA essentially plays 3 G, 1 SF, 1 PF/C as his starting lineup.  The best SF he's ever coached, DeMarre Carrol, played almost exclusively at the 4 spot for him and Carrol played SF in the NBA for 10 years.

Also, I think CMA really likes Earlington off the bench to bring energy and be one of the leaders of the 2nd group.  Zach said something about that when he talked to the coaching staff earlier this year.  His role has basically been 6th man the past 2 years, I don't see him changing that either.

By all accounts, Stanley was a far better high school player then Nyiwer. He did not do anything in JC that would make us think that he improved substantially from high school. He is supposedly very raw, and will not have played organized ball in more than  a year and a half once next season begins. Not sure why anyone would think that he'd be before Stanley on the depth chart. If he is, and barring our picking up a solid big man, we're in deep trouble in the middle again next season.

mcgriff is definitely transferring and TJ Cleveland & Macon are probably telling targets about the minutes available with Dunn & Mcgriff both gone.

addition by subtraction should only apply when a kid is disruptive, getting into trouble with the school or local authorities or hurting team chemistry.  As far as I know, nothing even remotely close to these scenarios existed with Josh.  He seemed like a good kid who worked hard and gave it everything he had.  How can you not want the best for someone like that?  I wish him well.

St. John's forward Josh Roberts is planning to enter transfer portal, he tells me, as
@Andrew__Slater
reported. Not opposed to returning to Queens, but wanted to expore options. #sjubb

Wish Josh nothing but the best whatever his ultimate decision/destination. As another poster mentioned, it would
be nice to see the three kids who started together as frosh for Mullin finish up their college career together at SJU.
On the other hand if Josh wants to go somewhere he will be likely to get more playing time, would love the opportunity to watch him in person here in NC if he were to transfer to an A-10 school.
He had tough luck with both the serious shoulder injury followed by Covid.

I would guess safe bet is all three of Posh, Williams, and Wusu start 1-3.

If Roberts wants more playing time, then he should transfer.  He is never getting big time minutes in the big east with his limitations on the offensive end of the floor.

St Johns needs to find a big man who can be effective on both ends of the floor.

Good luck to him in his endeavors.  When Robert’s got here, frankly I never even thought he’d develop the way he has.  He was so raw, and basketball wasn’t really very natural for him when he first got here.  He will be better suited at a different level.

With several  ships open and possibly more opening, this is where the staff needs to earn their money.  We have an opportunity to get better depending on who we bring in and replace Our departing players with.  Time for staff to make a splash here.

I could not agree more.  It is time to get the Duke in the starting lineup.

Nah, this the only St. John's board I post on.  Others are Razorbacks and Memphis Grizzlies :)

What does High School have to do with anything at this point?  Nyiwe hasn't played high school basketball in over 3 years, obviously he's not going to be remotely similar to the same player as he was back then.  Nyiwe has had a semester in the system to adjust over Stanley, plus he was a top 30 JUCO player coming out last year.  Chris Beard and Greg Marshall don't just give out offers, if both of those coaches offered him a scholarship coming out of JUCO the kid has something.  And you pointed out his JUCO stats, JUCO stats are irrelevant to big men sometimes... JUCO is almost like AAU in the sense that it's very guard oriented and they get the majority of the touches and scoring, especially if they are on a really good team with other D1 players.
