Josh Roberts in Portal

Brandon Tierney's take on this and Moore leaving is it is a positive for opening spots for transfer bigs for the Johnnies, at least that is what BT tweeted.

I wish both kids the best, especially Roberts.

I always read these threads and remember how people during the season will always say, "But we only have 1 open scholarship for next season...."

Josh
Thanks for coming to St Johns and giving us your heart and effort.  You leave great memories with many of us here. Best wishes on your future destination and hoping you excel there.

I am one of the people who says that. But I come from a place of wondering if can you actually go over the limit with scholarships, with the assumption kids will leave, or do you have to wait for someone to leave before giving out a scholarship. I'm just unclear on how that works.

The usage of Roberts was puzzling to me. He would start the majority of the games and then would get subbed out and never return again. This even occurred once Toro stopped being used. It definitely seemed like CMA only wanted one big in the game and Moore was the far better offensive player but a liability on defense. So either Roberts was still hurt or CMA preferred smaller better all around players like Earlington or Wusu. There were times where it seemed like having Roberts in the game could have helped us.
I wish Josh the best if he decides to leave and hope he finds the right spot to develop his game and earn his degree.

We need to add talented players to our roster. Of course we need an inside presence and some depth there but we also need length, quickness and shooting ability. We have the core of a very good team but with the transfer game, other teams can catch up quickly. I want them to make the NCAA's and win a game. It's time.

More addition by subtraction.  If it hadn't happened for him year by now it wasn't going to happen.

You all need to stop with "addition by subtraction" posts.  There is no reason whatsoever to dump on kids who chose to come here and gave the program what they had.  It doesn't work out for everyone (at any school) - when a kid did nothing wrong here and chooses to pursue opportunities elsewhere, the thing to do is wish them well and hope that the staff uses the open scholarship wisely.

And I have full confidence that they will do exactly that.  And it evens Paultz up for the beer he owes me if Josh transfers.
So true. Kid gave 100%. With limited PT on the horizon and one more year of eligibility, can anyone blame him. Hope it works out for him.

@NYPost_Brazille
St. John's forward Josh Roberts is planning to enter transfer portal, he tells me, as
@Andrew__Slater
reported. Not opposed to returning to Queens, but wanted to expore options. #sjubb

If true, sounds like staff has been honest with him re:his role and PT but is not pushing him.

He grossly underachieved. Three years and no improvement.
Disagree. Came in raw and developed nicely, albeit not as much as we needed. His foul shooting, in particular, was an area that he focused on and made big improvement. Started out very awkward as a freshman but came back for his sophomore year much more agile.

Just never quite developed the offensive skills necessary to compete at this level. But, obviously worked hard

I had him as a major contributor for next year's team. Hope he is only shopping and returns, confident that SJU is the place for him.

Major contributor?  A role player for sure and he did a decent job at that.  He was eaten alive inside by most of the Big East interior players and has very little offense.  I certainly think he did and can contribute here but not as a major contributor.  We need size and skill inside desperately.

Lot of strikes against him: Was too skinny for this level, last staff should have redshirted him, the shoulder and COVID interrupting rehab and workouts.

Good kid, but he was never going to get many minutes going forward. There are lots of mid- and low majors that will love to have him, especially in the South if he heads closer to home. I will follow box scores of his new team and root for him.

I will never forget the five 3 point shots he made against us in the NCAA Tournament game.

Shouldn't be puzzling at all if you were watching the games.  The players that produced the most played the most simple as that.  And I'm not trying to bash Roberts, but he missed a lot of easy shots, didn't rebound well for his size, and was prone to picking up silly fouls, those are just facts.  I have no idea how anybody watched him and thought he was a major contributor.  The only reason Roberts started was because Moore got in trouble and then when he came back he was playing well off the bench so CMA kept him in that role.

Think of it like this, Moore was butting heads with CMA and was in the dog house and he still played way more than Roberts, that should tell you all you need to know right there.  If Roberts was close to Moore in what he could bring to the table, CMA would have gladly given him Moore's minutes.  Coaches wanna win they put the best players on the floor.

The worst part is we aren't even asking for a hall of famer. If Lamont Hamilton or Shawnelle Scott-type guys walked through our doors we'd immediately be collecting funds for their bronze statues outside our arena.

Complaining about a guy not getting more playing time that averaged 2 PPG 2 RPG as a starter and as a junior isn't clouded judgement it's delusion. /media/kunena/emoticons/grin.png

I gotta give it to Josh though he's got the biggest fan base of any 2 PPG player I've ever seen in my life.  There's people right now getting hammered on twitter for suggesting this wasn't a big loss.  I thought about saying something, but I didn't want them all to jump on me /media/kunena/emoticons/cheerful.png
