I agree that the defense has been from bad to terrible so far but I think the main culprit is the front court. The juncos  are just not ready to play good defense and a pressure defense has to have a rim protector to make it work and SJU has nothing even resembling that.
The transfer hopefully coming in could make a difference.

With the penetration we allow, maybe Bill Russell in his prime could make a difference.

I am a Mike Anderson fan  but playing defense is more will than strategy. It's disappointing that he can't get new guys from Juco to buy into it from day 1. I can tolerate cold shooting but not poor defense. Defense Shouldn't be an issue . Timing or lack thereof on set plays is a process. Playing the passing lanes , not letting your man past you, that's all basic stuff you learn as a kid. Watching that is frustrating and he should pull anyone right away who doesn't buy in!

Not sure why this seems to have gravitated to the "JUCOs" not buying in. Frankly, no one has, starting with the most fundamental of defensive approaches, preventing penetration. We have guards, none of them jucos, who are more than capable of keeping people in front of them but it has not happened with any consistency to say the least.

I just received an email from the Queens Public Library announcing this event tonight (see link below) with filmmaker and former SJU Basketball player Otoja Abit. He will be discussing his recent Netflix film "A New York Christmas Wedding." The event can be seen virtually through facebook. It is excitingng to see Mr. Abit's journey into the Arts and wish him much success with it.

Here is his Bio from IMDB:

Otoja Abit (pronounced O-toe-jay Abbitt), the only son of driven Nigerian parents, was born in Brooklyn and grew up in Queens, NY.

A celebrated athlete and honored scholar, he attended Archbishop Molloy High School and went on to a year of post graduate work at The Gunnery in CT. Otoja completed his education at St. John's University where he played division one basketball and earned degrees in Communications, Theatre Studies and a Business minor.

The "smell of grease paint and roar of the crowd" got hold of Otoja during his first ever production, William Inge's, Picnic. Consequently, Otoja committed to a pursuit of his true passions: acting, writing and directing.

After interning at The Labyrinth theatre company, his first big project was working as the assistant director on Broadway's 2011 revival of That Championship Season, directed by Gregory Mosher and starring Kiefer Sutherland, Jason Patric and Chris Noth. Otoja then went on to book roles in both television and film including: a role in The Humbling, directed by Barry Levinson and playing opposite Al Pacino, HBO's critically acclaimed The Night Of, directed by Steven Zaillan. NBC's The Slap & The Blacklist, Paris in Aleta Chappelle's Romeo & Juliet in Harlem. And co-starring, as Marsha P Johnson, in Roland Emmerich's Stonewall.

Recent credits include: Marvel's Netflix "The Defenders" directed by SJ Clarkson- acting opposite Krysten Ritter. Co-creator, producer and star of the New York Television Festival's Official Selection, "Harlem Knights". And the 2018 short film "Jitters" which Otoja wrote, directed, produced and stars in.

With each new highlight my feeling that our coaches really let him down increases a bit more. He's not unathletic, had good size, wasn't a twig, and was really team-first and enthusiastic. He could have been something here if the coaches were up to the task.
Perhaps he was just a tad over his head in the Big East.  He was allowed to shoot from 3, he was allowed to mix it up.  I always thought it was enigmatic and lack of confidence.   He had good form, good rotation, and I would guess probably could hit 3's all day long in practice.   I just think he never really put it together here, and I don't see that as anyone's fault in particular.

Just about every kid who ever came here excelled at HS, AAU, prep school or JUCO.   You go up a few notches in competition and some kids will respond and many more will not play up to the task.

Great kid though, like many others who played here, and one with a great attitude rooting for his teammates continually.

Drafts for returning G-league players?

wouldnt he just be a "free agent" to any team of interest or are gleague rules different?

Figure he would have went overseas after last years attempt to make it in Gleague/NBA.

I think it's new because Lance Stevenson and Michael Beasley have both entered the draft.

Special Effects Jr.!   Pops has been posting a bunch of pics of the two of them working out together.  Kid looks hungry.  If he shares his father's athleticism and can develop a jump shot, he should be a good one.

Excerpt on his time @ St. John's

After two seasons, you became an Assistant Coach at St. John’s under Hall of Famer Chris Mullin. What was that experience like and how did it feed into the NBA vision you had for yourself?

Chris Mullin will end up having one of the biggest impacts on my coaching career after my father. At 25, he gave me the opportunity to lead and find my coaching voice. He gave me a chance to see, feel and touch things that a lot of times, you don’t get to experience until you're the head coach. To work with our Administration, Director of Basketball Operations, Graduate Assistants, video guys, and managers, I got to think like a head coach and be involved in all levels of the program. After my fourth season, I had good offers at some schools for assistant coaching roles, but I wanted to be in the NBA. I thought, I'm not married, I don't have kids, so now is the time to make this pivot.

Follow up on Shamorie Ponds entering G league draft.

Apparently, it was today and he didn't get drafted, but surprisingly Quincy McKnight did.

Who would have thought McKnight over Ponds...go figure.

Strange draft, there were only 25 picks in total over the course of 3 rounds. Still unreal how far Ponds has fallen.
Far? I mean I loved ponds here at St. John's and he was a great player for us but are you really surprised that he hasnt caught on in the NBA or G league? He doesnt play a lick of defense and hasnt really changed his body much since college it seems. Great college player but I never really thought hed catch on. He did things well at the colleg elevel but I didnt really think his game would translate well to the NBA.
