Smith
Soriano
Mathis
Wheeler

A little Rothstein hyperbole, but what the heck;

Well embedded moles in Queens have relayed word that Purdue transfer Aaron Wheeler has been the early surprise at St. John's. 6-9 and a major athlete. Tailor made for Mike Anderson's system.

Hyperbole or not, this is a 6’9” kid with tons of big 10 experience and will likely have us losing no sleep with the departure of Moore.

Thanks a lot, Rothstein.

I am sure the board will have Wheeler 1st Team All-Big East before summer is out.  /media/kunena/emoticons/whistling.png

I seem to recall Rothstein also had some very high praise for Moore after early practices. Turns out he wasn't far off notwithstanding the off court issues.

This does not shock me. The staff definitely doesn't take the scattershot approach, so they saw something in this kid that they could work with.

It's great news, because Wheeler has already said he'll do two years here, and we have Julian for at most one more. We'll need someone to eventually replace a decent chunk of Champ's ppg, and if the style of play helps Wheeler get up to 10 ppg, that would help a whole lot until we can unearth another star.

We'll also have a big starting frontline if Julian comes back and Wheeler beats out about four other guys for the open forward spot. But I expect him to get nice minutes anyway. Depth will be a nice problem to have.

One of the biggest things we did this off-season was add guys who played and won at high levels. We needed closers and we got guys who were big parts of teams that closed. Experience matters especially in conference play
