Johnnies Tidbits

All the new St. John's players arrive this week for the first summer session, I'm told, except for the two LuHi kids Drissa Traore and Andres Pinzon. They don't graduate until the end of the month.

Pinzon is also playing for Puerto Rico in the U-19 world cup this summer.

Curry can actually shoot with a guy in his face. I think I'll still put my money on him over Camus in a shooting competition.

Wusu is very athletic and has a world of potential. He also seems highly motivated to improve and expand his skill base. I see him as being a very productive four year player for us and look forward to seeing him develop.

I hope you're right.  4 year players at one school seems to have gone the way of the dinosaur.

A few things I like about him already.  Even if he's not knocking down outside shots -- which teams will increasingly give him because of the driving prowess -- he can impact a game multiple ways in a positive manner.  He can defend various types of players and he will only get better at that because he seems committed to defense and has strength/quickness.  He can get to the rim in transition or even at times the half court when his jumper is not falling, though the more he becomes an outside threat the more the driving lanes will open.  He's a willing passer.  And, above all else, he seems to be a tough as nails SOB.  Him and Posh weren't intimidated by anyone and I don't think they will be intimidated by anyone.  They play their a**es off, and while that sounds like a fundamental trait all kids should have, many do not.

St. John's Athletics will host its 75th annual end of the year athletic awards celebration to honor the accomplishments of its student-athletes both on and off the field during the 2020-21 school year.

The ceremony, which will be held virtually for the second consecutive year, will be broadcast live via YouTube on Wednesday June 9 at 3 p.m.

The awards celebration is set to feature remarks from St. John's Director of Athletics Mike Cragg, St. John's Campus Minister for Athletics Father Richard Rock and several Red Storm student-athletes who will be recognized.

Each year at the athletic awards celebration, MVPs from each respective program are announced along with several special awards including the Herbert V. Hess Award, the Frank C. Haggerty Memorial Award and the John W. Kaiser Award.
