Jim Boeheim Speaks Out On Gun Control

He's talking about automatic weapons. Those are not obtainable by civilians. There were no automatic weapons used in this killing. In fact it was 2 pistols and a semiautomatic rifle, not an automatic one. The rifle technology is no different than hunting rifles at all.

In fact, there were no gun control issues here. The guns were not sold to the kid. The guns were stolen from his mother, and then she was murdered with them. In fact there is no statistical difference between the number of mass killings for over a century regardless of changes in gun legislation.

Jim needs to start on his pulpit by first learning what he's talking about. Oh, he also might want to actually suspend his players when they steal from the mall.

No need for her to have those type of guns..Not gun collector type....

Not sure why you assume other people's "needs". She wasn't anything but a victim of a psychopath son.

According to the reports she feared her son so much she told his babysitter to never turn his back on him--not even for a second. She took the same troubled son to the shooting range, taught him to shoot, and then left several guns around the house unsecured. She had twenty years of notice of what her son was capable of. Because of her negligence, 26 innocent victims are dead.

Then get the guns away from the drug dealers and gang bangers, but that will never happen.

I was listenen to wins and they said that she was about to have him committed. Only thing I don`t understand is if your kid is a loony then why aren`t those gun locked away some where so he couldn`t get to him or bring them to a friends house until he`s gone. Doesn`t make sinse

Any gun owner should have trigger locks on guns and keep guns in a safe. There are far more cases of accidents in a home, or using a handgun for violence than in having a gun lying around that actually protected occupants of a home.

Lethal weapons have no place in civilized society. A sad reality is law enforcement officers and our military must possess them. While you may feel safer carrying a handgun into an unsafe situation, the reality is if you are involved in a confrontation, the possession of that weapon will likely accelerate that violence and not defuse it.

Video games glorify death. Kids who play them are desensitized to killing. If your kid locks himself in his room and plays these games all day long, you are helping to create a sociopath, or at best a warped person.

I don't think a basketball coach is more or less qualified to speak on a social subject than any civilian, but has the right to use his public position to speak out. Whether this bothers you or not about Boeheim probably depends on whether you agree with him or not.

I have come full circle on the issue. My first emotional response was to ban semi automatic weapons . Then I thought about Oklahoma city, then 911, the school in the 20's. If evil people want to kill they will kill however they can. If the President decides to ban through executive order who will that hurt? I am afraid it will hurt law abiding citizens because the bad guys will always have access to these weapons.

More than trigger locks, they should have been in a gun safe. Agree the mother was negligent here. She had a criminally insane son who she new was dangerous and had these things accessible to him. Horrible. I still don't believe that legal gun sales are the problem at all though. This was a bad situation in every way. She just made it easy for him to carry out his psychotic plans.

The mass-killer in Newtown, the mass-killers at Columbine, the mass-killer in the Denver movie theater, the mass-killer in Arizona who shot Rep. Gabby Giffords and 18 other people, and (sadly) on and on and on ... none of them were gang bangers or drug dealers.

Hurt law-abiding citizens? How? By not allowing them to have military assault weapons? Law-abiding citizens are not allowed to own grenade launchers or machine guns, and they shouldn't be allowed to own semi-automatic weapons that were designed to kill as many people as possible in the least amount of time. It was the law once, and it should be the law again.

The answer cannot continue to be "bad people do bad things". We have a serious gun control problem in this country and the fact is we're really the only democracy to have this problem.

The people of this nation continue to mourn the victims and hold vigils in the immediate aftermath, but if we continue to sit on our hands regarding this issue, what is the point?

Recently, I was in a fast food place down in Raleigh and a plumber walks in with a handgun on his belt. Now, I'm sure this man was a law abiding gun owner and had no intention of causing harm to anybody. But the fact is somebody should not have that right or power to just walk into a public place armed. How many more of these incidents need to happen before we take a page out of Europe's book?

They shouldn't have the right? Who are you to say? Gun violence is definately a problem in the US. We have a very violent culture from video games to music lyrics to movies. As Europe goes, yes they have very strict gun laws. In the last few years germany- 13 teachers,2 students and a policeman murderd by a gun. France- pshyciatric patient kills 8. Switzerland- assault rifle kills 14. Hungary 2 gunmen kill 7 in a bank robbery. 69 people killed in Norway. 2010 12 people killed in England. You get the point. You cant keep guns away from evil people. On the flip side-Israel almost everybody carries a gun and mass shootings are virtually unheard of. Who knows the answer?

The columbine shooting happened right in the middle of the assault weapons ban, evil people do evil things and the sickening thing are the people who race out and want to use this tragedy to promote their agenda on either side.

Erick, politics will always use tragedy for their political agenda (just like Hillary said "never let a tragedy go to waste.) Again if you want those weapons out of law abiden citizens then get them away from those hard core criminals.

SJUisback i agree with you the emphasis shouldn't be on de-arming law abiding citizens but on de-arming criminals, have mandatory sentences for firearm related crimes and allow the authorities to do their job and stop them before tragedy strikes.

I doubt that in european countries that JayZ and PSY, both of whom sing lyrics urging the killing of Americans (PSY) and killing gays with a glock (JayZ) would not be invited to tea with their Queens and Kings or whatever they have.
People who nudge or break the rules over here become heros in the press. Dillinger, Bonnie and Clyde. Jesse James, and Willie Sutton were all folk heros. Nothing has changed. Page six is filled every day with Paris, Lindsey, O.J., and John Gotti types. The only way to get a reputation for bad behavior is to be a foreigner in America and break the law. Only then do you become a person to be despised.
To a deranged, twenty something male who feels worthless, his ticket to fame is an atrocity. He will have no problem finding the means to acomplish his task unless we ban cars, airliners, gunpowder etc. in addition to guns, knives, sharp sticks, big rocks, and matches. The answer lies in our culture not in our toys. Easier access to mental health care would be a good start but not a solution.
BTW, I have no problem with Jim Boehiem speaking his thoughts on the issue; everybody else is; why not him. At least he is familiar with the 20 year old male brain.
Further, BTW, I have no problem with JayZ either :).......he's an American.

Another thing I wish they would stop doing is naming the people who commit these crimes. How many of these troubled people do these things because they know they will be discussed. They will be known and spoken about? How many of these crimes are committed because of the "copycat" effect? I know it is impossible to know, but I wonder how many of these tragedies would have occurred if Columbines was never reported on or the person who committed the crime was never mentioned., One thing is for sure, my question will never be answered.
