Jayson Williams - a free man

I cant believe you unforgiving right wingers. People make mistakes, we are all human. We should all welcome Jayson back into our "flock". Just remember the parable of the one lost sheep. Of course it might be hard for some of you who are perfect.

Just wondering and looking for a very honest answer

How would you feel if all the facts were the same and Mike Jarvis was the party involved herein..

It's a toss between flaying and the rack, maybe both. ;)

All I've said about Mr and Mrs Bernie Fine is that because of what they are said to have done and because of the failed drug tests of the players that Boeheim says he never heard of for 5 yrs--- Cuse should suffer penalties like having a championship and wins revoked and being denied scholarships and being banned from post season play. Oh yea I think I also mentioned that the media has been reluctant to fully investigate Cuse because most of them hail from the school as alum. I think Boeheim is getting a pass from the NCAA because of who he is and all the wins he has accumulated. I dont think they want to deal with having to subtract some ot those wins from his record. Too many political issues come to play and I think they prefer to sweep it under the rug, which the media alum from Cuse are only to happy to oblige.
As for Jayson --and I will repeat this-- he is really a good guy who made mistakes with his life which he has paid for in many ways- prison, divorce, lost financial assets etc. When he was on top he gave millions to the school in a donation. You dont abandon your "brother" now when he is down.

+10.

Fact is this man killed another man and tried to make it out to be a suicide. I don't care how accidental the killing was, this man should not be free and should definitely not be anywhere around this program. Lucky for him he didn't kill anyone else while driving drunk. This man should not have people wishing him the best because he was nice to them for 20 minutes, he is a monster

Chill out dude.
He did his time.

So I suppose after a pedophile does his time you would leave him alone with your kids.

He wasnt a pedophile...He is guilty of being stupid and paid his debt...prior to that he was probably one of the most benevolent SJU BBall graduates...I wont pretend to know him but would venture to guess that he has a good heart and made a very dumb mistake...and, from what I read, the victim's family is ready to forgive him

Are we not fans and supporters of a Catholic University?!

Luke 6:37
Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.

He's not a compulsive serial killer, but he's a compulsive idiot and compulsively destructive to other people.

I hope the man cleans up his life but what he did is SO awful that the man shouldn't be embraced by a University, at least at this point. The guy MURDERED another human being and then tried to cover it up!!! And then AFTER that, he drove drunk!!!!

Who gives 2 craps if he spent an hour talking basketball with you?? Or was personable with you?! He KILLED someone and then tried to cover it up!!! Again, hope he cleans himself up and can make a positive impact in the world. I just don't think the University should embrace this guy.

Couldn't agree more. Just like the Yankees distanced themselves from Jim Leyritz, we should distance ourselves from this train wreck.

Mr. Rabinowitz, get your facts straight. We know your a sports aficionado and not an attorney but you are even less of a moralist. Jayson was never convicted of any murder (see below), but to make him seem more despicable, you throw in the fact that he drove drunk! Well Mr. Rabinowitz, I would imagine most on this site have been guilty of driving while drunk and a few may have taken a life or two in the name of liberty in a far away land but you sometimes judge tragic figures with the circumstances that made them tragic. I once had a friend who loved to brag about the number of Viet Cong he killed while the USA was propping up a south Vietnamese dictatorship. We lost that war in the name of liberty and now trade actively with the communist nation of Vietnam. In the end, my former friend was a bigger murderer than Jayson Williams.

"Williams was tried in 2004 on eight counts, including aggravated manslaughter. A jury acquitted him of three of the more serious shooting counts, found him guilty on four "coverup" charges, and was unable to reach a decision on the second count of reckless manslaughter."

...and he will live with what happened his entire life. He was not a murderer but a man with many personal issues. The incident cost him his wife and his fortune. As tragic a story as that of Sonny Dove. NBA careers and money turn into a curse for so many players.

And this drunk idiot shot a man and killed him. Who cares about the guy who lost money and deals with self pity. Another man got shot and killed by a dude who cared so much and was such an inspiration to all of us that he later was seen driving drunk. Depraved indifference after all those episodes is certainly a good way to show how much of man you are. And I like how all the herbs on this board gang up on ppl. Is it hard to believe that in some circles one man telling another to chill out is a punishable offense? Bunch of wise asses and jerks

The screen name is familiar, so I'll assume it's from Johnny Jungle, but I don't recall you being nearly this whiny over there.

Turns out most people agree with my sentiments about this guy being as far away from the program as possible. Sorry for being a whiny baby for not wanting this POS around the program and having a problem with someone dismissing my opinion immediately

and sirvoo...as you write this...you post a picture of jerry garcia...a serial drug user who encouraged millions to follow suit..
talk about selective morality.

In a thread full of absurd analogies, this one takes the cake. " ..who encouraged millions to follow suit"... That's a good one. Yikes

I just don't think it is right for someone who basically got away with murder while drunk, then proves he has not been rehabilitated when he goes out and drives under the influence should be anywhere near a college bball program. And I'd also go as far as saying he is a sick man. Clearly he has demons. So I'd appreciate if people like Tom in Salem would not say chill out. Others can express the way they feel

It wasn't first degree murder here. He was drunk and messing around with his guns. All were having a good time till end went bad with a fatal accident. He don't "get away with it" either. He went to jail and did time. His fatal flaw was trying to cover it up. He did the equivalent of driving away from the scene of the crime because I'd panic and fear of what would happen. This is not an evil dude. This is no different an a drunk driver who fled the scene out of panic.

I've done lots of stupid things back in the day as have most people. Majority of people who leave a bar or restaurant after happy hour are would-be criminals. There was no malicious intent in Jayson Williams's crime. I'm not a religious person. I'm a pantheist, but I was raised Catholic and forgiveness is a main tenet of e religion. J. Will. Made a huge mistake and did jail time for trying to cover up his mistakes while panicking to save his existence on this planet. I don't mind him around the program. He needs to rehab his life now.

No, his fatal flaw was drinking and messing with a loaded gun which he had done many times before and been warned many times he was just tempting fate with his reckless behavior. I know, because I know people who were in the house with him partying at the time of the shooting. The first and only thought any of those low lifes had after the shooting was how they were going to hide it; two of those people I called friends until I found out none of them even made an attempt to see if that man could be saved. Don't believe the papers and don't judge by the charge finally given; it was only a matter of time until someone was killed in the environment Williams fostered. As for forgiveness, I give it to those deserving; not someone who "learned his lesson" by continuing his reckless, dangerous behavior by drinking and driving after killing a man.

+1!!! Great post. Always willing to forgive, but the man has a LONGGGGGGGGG way to go.

I would bet there are people on this board that wouldn't want Mike Jarvis anywhere near the campus, but would welcome Jayson Williams back with open arms.

Yes genius a musician encouraging drugs in the late 60's is the same thing as a drunk idiot constantly putting others lives at risk after already killing someone

When the name calling starts to lose its appeal you might want to look at the clinical framework that is currently in use. This is from the Diagnostic Statistical Manual, DSM IV, which is about to be superceded.

DSM-IV Substance Abuse Criteria

Substance abuse is defined as a maladaptive pattern of substance use leading to clinically significant impairment or distress as manifested by one (or more) of the following, occurring within a 12-month period:

Recurrent substance use resulting in a failure to fulfill major role obligations at work, school, or home (such as repeated absences or poor work performance related to substance use; substance-related absences, suspensions, or expulsions from school; or neglect of children or household).

Recurrent substance use in situations in which it is physically hazardous (such as driving an automobile or operating a machine when impaired by substance use)

Recurrent substance-related legal problems (such as arrests for substance related disorderly conduct)

Continued substance use despite having persistent or recurrent social or interpersonal problems caused or exacerbated by the effects of the substance (for example, arguments with spouse about consequences of intoxication and physical fights).

Just speaking from my own personal experiences and short interactions with Jayson as he was slightly older than me he was a really nice guy and almost as funny as me :) and a cool dude who could definitely put away a lot of drinks. Then again so could I while I was in college as I suspect a lot of us could.

Life takes turns and people drink for different reasons. Some social and some to escape deamons. Some of the stuff that's happened to jayson in regards to drinking ( not talking about the guns ) could have happened to a lot of us and still could

I dont begrudge Jayson and I have no problem if he is sitting with Loooie in the stands at our games.

Most of all I wish him well in his search for inner peace

That's not 100 % wrong. They did distance themselves from Leyritz for a number of years. Obviously they've changed their position in the last few days.
