Jayson Williams - a free man

Will never forget Jayson's visit to Louie's office after he signed with Portland. Took us outside to see his new 745 BMW. Also was kind enough to take a picture with one of my sons.

Jayson was at a game at MSG either last season or the season before. He was sitting with Looie and Brian and seemed to be enjoying himself, laughing and cheering for the team, a lot of people came up to him at half time and he was very gracious to everybody. Must've been out on parole. I don't condone what he's done, but he's served his sentence and seems to have started to turn his life around. If he keeps it together I'd have no problem with him attending games

Jayson's got a heart of gold, but unfortunately at times it's seemed like he's got a brain made of wood. His decisions have not always been the best, going back to when he tossed a folding chair into the crowd at Providence(?) in his first season at St. John's.

Here's hoping that he gets his life in order and we can see that terrific smile of his often again. Best of luck, Jayson!

I don't care how big of a St. John's fan you are: that man should've gotten a MUCH larger prison sentence. The university would be making a big mistake if they were to invite him or promote him in any way.

Jayson came into a restaurant I was working in(a few years before his incident) and we talked sju basketball for about an hour. was very nice to me and the staff. I wish him the best.

 Fact is this man killed another man and tried to make it out to be a suicide. I don't care how accidental the killing was, this man should not be free and should definitely not be anywhere around this program. Lucky for him he didn't kill anyone else while driving drunk. This man should not have people wishing him the best because he was nice to them for 20 minutes, he is a monster

I recall as a boy hearing this idea "don't talk about sports, religion or politics around the dinner table";

my large Brooklyn family was not a meek or quiet one so there were often very loud voices;

I would add to the list "crimes" to go with sports etc. Can stir up deep emotions and discord.

each of us is SOOOO different; having spent much of my life in and around courts, first in the Army then NYC and then other levels, I have compassion for Jayson Williams;

if I recall correctly he once got into a game fight at Providence; clearly he has tremendous energy and volitility and at times poor judgment; very poor.

the man should get on with his life despite the tragedy and a lost life; not saying they should raise a banner at Alumni Hall for Jayson or hire him to recruit etc.

it's a sad situation but I would not call him a monster; I would just hope he gets on with his life and does as much good as he can - quietly -

all the best

 BTW, how do you feel about Chris Mullin?

While Jayson probably should have received a larger sentence for the accidental shooting, I hazard the guess that none of us know what Jayson has done to come to grips with his behavior. Nor do I know the character flaws that made him cover it up. I do know I have no clue, and hope he has become a better man in dealing with the tragedy he caused.

I just don't think it is right for someone who basically got away with murder while drunk, then proves he has not been rehabilitated when he goes out and drives under the influence should be anywhere near a college bball program. And I'd also go as far as saying he is a sick man. Clearly he has demons. So I'd appreciate if people like Tom in Salem would not say chill out. Others can express the way they feel

Chill out dude.
He did his time.

...and he will live with what happened his entire life. He was not a murderer but a man with many personal issues. The incident cost him his wife and his fortune. As tragic a story as that of Sonny Dove. NBA careers and money turn into a curse for so many players.

And this drunk idiot shot a man and killed him. Who cares about the guy who lost money and deals with self pity. Another man got shot and killed by a dude who cared so much and was such an inspiration to all of us that he later was seen driving drunk. Depraved indifference after all those episodes is certainly a good way to show how much of man you are. And I like how all the herbs on this board gang up on ppl. Is it hard to believe that in some circles one man telling another to chill out is a punishable offense? Bunch of wise asses and jerks

The screen name is familiar, so I'll assume it's from Johnny Jungle, but I don't recall you being nearly this whiny over there.

It wasn't first degree murder here. He was drunk and messing around with his guns. All were having a good time till end went bad with a fatal accident. He don't "get away with it" either. He went to jail and did time. His fatal flaw was trying to cover it up. He did the equivalent of driving away from the scene of the crime because I'd panic and fear of what would happen. This is not an evil dude. This is no different an a drunk driver who fled the scene out of panic.

I've done lots of stupid things back in the day as have most people. Majority of people who leave a bar or restaurant after happy hour are would-be criminals. There was no malicious intent in Jayson Williams's crime. I'm not a religious person. I'm a pantheist, but I was raised Catholic and forgiveness is a main tenet of e religion. J. Will. Made a huge mistake and did jail time for trying to cover up his mistakes while panicking to save his existence on this planet. I don't mind him around the program. He needs to rehab his life now.

So I suppose after a pedophile does his time you would leave him alone with your kids.
