It’s not over

I love RJ and hope he returns. We don’t accomplish we accomplished as a team without him. As far as today is concerned, he was a black hole when he had the ball. Driving into the lane with three opposing players there waiting for him. Forcing shot after shot. At one point Zuby looked like he was yelling at him to move the ball. It looked like that was the hand gesture Zuby was making. Coach Pitino must have been telling him also and he just wasn’t doing it and he wasn’t making shots. RJ played extremely selfishly today. There is no “I” in team. A hall of fame coach is not going to put up with not being listened to. He’s not going to put a star player ahead of the team. Especially when he is still in the process of creating and building a culture here. Now, the fact that it was the biggest game of the year in a one and done tournament and that should have warranted a different approach. That’s up for debate and we will have posters who fall on both sides of the fence. Pitino is our coach though. It is his program now. He’s a hall of fame coach and he’s going to run it his way. Regardless of where you fall on this issue , you can’t argue with the results. Pitino had enough of what he was seeing and obviously thought that addressing the situation the way he did was the right thing for the game, the team , the program and for the what he is trying to build here. I have to just trust coach here.
+1000.

RJ did not deserve to end his season on the bench. Hard to defend that decision.
I’m with u on this… unless he cursed out Rick in a huddle… I don’t get it… I’m definitely riding the horse that got me there…

Seeing the emptiness in his eyes when the camera panned to him in the final 2 mins was not how I thought this season would end…

You don't think Rick told him to stop charging into the lane, and RJ kept doing it.

If a player doesn't listen and he's hurting the team, then there's only one thing left to do.

I don't care who you are, if that player keeps hurting the team over and over and over, you gotta bench him.
I support Rick on that decision 1000+.

Lol is this the first time some of u watched RJ play this year…? This is what RJ does! lol

Nah I get u… with the boneheaded drives comes some amazing plays as well… what a time this teach-able moment had to come…

Well we won a game in the NCAAs and set a school record for games won. The season was a great success.

And then I'll rise and fight again".”

He hasn't played like tpday since maybe ooc, if he drove and players were coming in the paint, he's pass out.

Bad time to try and be a hot shot again.

I’ll settle for “as good. To expect them to lose key guys like Scott, KR & Smith and assume we can win BE regular season, BE T, be ranked #5 and a two seed seems quite a reach. Especially w no idea of roster composition. Admire your optimism though.

I loved watching Scott and Deivon, but if they can't upgrade over them in the portal then the rebirth is a myth.

Realistically, St. John's had many weaknesses in this season. And Big East was not strong in this season. Now, only UConn is surviving at 32. If UConn loses to Florida, no Big East team makes sweet 16. St. John's lost to Baylor and Georgia in the early of this season. Regular Big East season and Big East tournament champion let St. John's ranked 5th and 6th in the nation. St. John's was overrated. We have played with upper middle class teams all season long such as Creighton, Marquette and Xavier. We never played national contender teams in this season so we don't know how deep and strong the teams made it to the sweet 16, elite 8 and final 4.

Hope that Pitino recruits more players so that we can reach final 4 and national champion in near future.

We will also need to boost our OOC so we get tested and play teams with Arkansas' build for next year. Unfortunately, we cannot depend on the Big East to prep us.

Always tough to end the season on watching your team play their worst game of the year. Easier to accept when you see them play great and go out to a clearly superior opponent. Also all of our expectations were raised so this is an especially bitter loss.

That said I couldn’t be more in agreement with the sentiment of this thread. What a GREAT year for the program. Only one team gets to be national champion. Everyone else’s season ends in some form of disappointment. If this loss ruins the achievements of program milestones like Big East Champs, BET Champs, winning the first tourney game in a quarter of a century, etc then I’m going to assume you forgot what program you root for. Any season where St John’s fans are DISAPPOINTED we didn’t make the Sweet 16 is a VERY good year for St John’s 😂 Excited to see where this goes. Fun year everyone
Dude... We were dead in the water for a long time. Now we were pulled into the oasis. Next up is sleeping with Ginger or Mary Ann next year.

This year was gravy, an unexpected and glorious run that resurrected a program. I admit I shed a tear or two of happiness when we won the BET, and how long has it been for us to be happy?

That’s his choice. His play was horrible today. Over and over driving into traffic and often not even getting a shot off. It was like he totally regressed to last seasons bone headed plays at times. He played street ball today, nothing more.
Not saying he alone lost the game for us but he certainly did not help.
During halftime of the following game, Kenny Smith and Clark Kellogg touched on a few things from our game. One of which was the fact that while RJ was clearly having an off shooting day, that should not have precluded him from contributing in other ways. As they said "the great ones figure out how to help their team even when they're having an off day".

RJ had a great season, and nothing should take away from that, but RJ not only didn't help us today, he actually hurt us. As you say RMN, it was a total regression in his play. Damn shame after the season he and the team had.

I’ve said it all along but the ncaa tournament is not about the best team it’s all about matchups and this was not a good one for us and we did not play well. Super frustrated and sad right now but what a season it was. They did everything I could have asked for and more just wish yhe season lasted another few games.

Big east regular season ✅
Big east tournament✅
Ncaa win ✅
Terribly disappointing to have the season end as it did, but if you had shown me those checkmarks in November, I would have said sign me up. Thrilling ride with what appears to be a great bunch of kids.
Time to root for for my third favorite team, MSU.

Agree totally. Scheduling can be tricky especially with advent of mega leagues, but one concrete improvement for SJU is to land more OOC contests v quality teams.

Perhaps our national attention this year will make it easier to book them at MSG. The talked about home and home game w Kentucky is one example. UConn I read is trying to up the ante on their OOC schedule in 25-26. We must follow suit no matter how difficult.
