Isaiah Whitehead, SG (Seton Hall verbal)

Saturday tip-ins

Five-star combo guard Isaiah Whitehead, who's running with the Juice All-Stars this weekend, said nothing has changed with his recruitment. He still has a top 10 that features Arizona, Florida, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, Rutgers, St. John's, Syracuse and UCLA. He's in the process of arranging visits to some of those programs in the next few months.

Per Rivals....

Showing off the range

Isaiah Whitehead is ranked No. 19 in the country because of his versatility and his playmaking ability. Now, he's added a third component to his game that should ensure him five-star status: Shooting.

Whitehead, who's always been an OK shooter, was great on the EYBL circuit, shooting well from behind the arc the last few weeks, and showed in Texas that that was no fluke.

He pulled up from 3-point range often and knocked down shots with ease, showing his late work in the gyms is paying off.

His recruitment remains stagnant, however. His top 10 has been the same for months: Arizona, Florida, UCLA, Kansas, Kentucky, Syracuse, Louisville, Maryland, Rutgers and St. John's. He he has no desire to trim his list soon.

PHILADELPHIA — Isaiah Whitehead knows that his shooting stroke was once one of the weaknesses of his game.

So he worked on it, and worked on it, and worked some more.

By the looks of things, his work paid off.

The 6-foot-5 2014 Brooklyn Lincoln guard drained seven 3-pointers en route to 27 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists and team MVP honors as Team Bravery lost to Team Inspiration, 119-114, in the Mary Kline Underclassmen Game at Philadelphia University.

“I heard about the knock on my shooting so I just been in the gym working on it, working on it, working on it, and now I finally got the technique down pat, and now it’s going in,” Whitehead said.

As for recruiting, Whitehead listed Louisville, Syracuse, Minnesota, UCLA and St. John’s among his top schools.

“I’ll probably visit Louisville, back to Syracuse, Minnesota, I want to go out there and see what [Richard] Pitino got,” Whitehead said.

Whitehead and 2014 point guard Ja’Quan Newton both mentioned Minnesota, which is now getting much more heavily involved with East Coast players under Pitino and assistants Dan McHale and Kimani Young.

“[Minnesota said] that instead of going into a big program, you still have the spotlight there in Minnesota, but it’s like kind of shying away from the spotlight [in New York],” he said. “He came at me with a great recruitment.”

As for Louisville, the defending national champs are coached by Rick Pitino, Richard’s father.

“They’re run-and-gun, you gotta guard your man of course,” he said. “Pitino’s not gonna have it. You gotta play defense. It’s just basically a great program. They just won a national championship so you can’t look them over.”

Syracuse has long been in the mix for Whitehead.

“They’re probably if not the highest, the second-highest out of them and Louisville right now because the coaches are non-stop talking to my mom, my coach, they texting me,” Whitehead said. “So there’s a lot going on.”

St. John’s is the hometown school.

“[Steve] Lavin texts me every day basically, to see how my day’s going,” he said. “He texted me about my prom that I had a couple weeks ago.”

In March, Whitehead had 12 points to lead Lincoln to the PSAL “AA” title over Thomas Jefferson.

Now, he says he’ll be more relaxed as a senior.

“I think I’ve outgrown the pressure now,” he said. “I came into high school going to Lincoln, you have to win a championship. I think I got that off my back now, so next year I’m just going trying to win another one so there’s really no more pressure for me.”

Thanks 98, you have to love Coach Lavin's relaxed approach in recruiting Whitehead, just get the kid to be comfortable with him so in the end of the day kid loves the coach and realizes that if he doesn't want to leave home he will be in a great situation. Very smart on the part of Coach Lavin.

We will win some and we will lose some this way. Personally, I like Lavin's method. He recruits kids that want to be here and the power of suggestion can really work, and Lavin has landed a lot of kids by just constant contact, but not overboard pressure. He gets results which is all that matters. I'm feeling better about Whitehead's recruitment as time goes on. Lavin has been very consistent with him. Dick Pitino and Minnesota??? Really? I don't think that is happening...

I also like the approach of Lavin and the staff. They aren't overly-aggressive nor overly-cavalier.... There is a medium to the way they recruit. Before you know it, we're one of the 3, 4, or 5 schools on the final list of a kid. Let's hope that is the case with Whitehead. If so, then I'd start to feel a bit better.

I wished The Playaz were able to advance to the Peach Jam, as I really wanted to get a chance to see Whitehead up close and personal.

Mary Kline Classic:

Isaiah Whitehead
2014 G/Lincoln (NY)
Whitehead is one of the most sought-after guards of the 2014 class, and his showing on Friday night showed everyone in attendance why. The guard put together a 25-point performance and scored 11 of those in the fourth quarter, nine off of three-pointers. The leadership and ability to shoulder the load for his team was an impressive sight and one that many colleges hope to see in their respective uniforms

Louisville, UCLA, Florida and St. John’s, among others, have all offered Whitehead, with the Cardinals showing the most interest. Whitehead said he will start taking visits after the conclusion of the AAU season.

I definitely agree with you guys. Lavin is the master of the slow play. It used to drive me crazy that he wasn't front and center at most AAU games and invitationals watching recruits but you start to see the method to his madness.

He's not going to chase kids like UConn handing out offers to half of the Top 100 list. He's going to let his assistants do a lot of the leg work and then come in as the finisher.

We'll miss out on some recruits this way (McCullough) but we'll still get our fair share of them.

Asking Whitehead about his prom just struck me as funny when a guy like Pitino in Minn is probably sweating bullets and trying to sway him away from NY. We may miss out on IW, but Lavin won't have a heart attack doing it.

looie had a "relaxed" approach and you see where that got us.

on the other hand, texting a kid every day and asking about his prom doesn't seem to be that relaxed to me.

I see Rutgers name all over most recruits list .Guess their approach is offer most and maybe they get one

Just like their strategy when it comes to hiring AD's and maybe they hit on one.

Never said it was a "relaxed" approach. Moreso, not hounding a kid but giving them room and allowing them to enjoy the recruitment process. Other coaches pretty much eliminate themselves by how pushy they are.

I think Lavin wants to make their final cut list and wants to get their last official visit. That shows a lot of confidence especially when our campus is not a selling point at all and could be seen as a deterrent.

In the short time Eddie Jordan has been coach he has signed 6 recruits for this season. Including jucos and transfers.

well now he has a 6 man roster

Isaiah Whitehead, 2014 SG: One of the top scorers in the class of 2014, Whitehead was at it again on Sunday night. With an improved jumper from deep, he is lethal from all three levels. Whitehead can also make plays for others and is more than capable of running the point when he needs to. After a strong spring, it looks as he will continue to trend upwards. A strong summer could vault him into top-10 consideration.

Not so. Believe they listed 5 holdovers in the article I read but why let the facts get in the way of a good story piling on Rutgers. Have at it boys they are presently a joke of a University and the Governor is a joke too.
