Isaiah Whitehead, SG (Seton Hall verbal)

As far as IW, lets not call the kettle black. There are already rumors Lavin tried to get Tiny a different job. And if our staff had any wiggle room at all, I don't think it's out of the question we would've brought him on to the staff. We play the games just like everyone else. We just couldn't guarantee the playing time and focal point status that the Hall could.

Thank you. I have no idea what SHU actually did and did not do in this recruitment, and I have no idea what SJU actually did and did not do. It appears that this one became more involved than most, especially if SHU brings Morton aboard.

But even if that turns out to be the case accusing the school who gets the recruit of playing dirty is just a bad look, not to mention cliche. It's the default for the losing fan base(s) in every recruitment, especially when it's close until the end. We've won our fair share of those in the last 18 months and have lost some as well. SHU won this one, hats off to them and best of luck to IW.

But IMO you can still be dirty and legal at the same time. There are rules and unwritten rules. Whenever a coach uses a player to ride his back (a kid mind you) strictly to further his own career, it's just wrong. I realize SHU isn''t exclusive in doing this. If we brought him on board as well as his coach I still think many posters would be a bit embarrassed for needing to bring his coach just to land him. When you are a grown man manipulating a kid like that it leaves a bad taste in your mouth legal or not. What makes it worse are the unsaid components which we all know is happening behind the curtains i.e. IW (and maybe mother too) getting paid with Morton's paycheck.

It's not just the act itself, it's the fact that it opens Pandora's box to other unethical things. The NCAA is a joke. They will try to hold back Orlando Sanchez with fantastic grades, both parents gone, etc. all because of a few minutes, but they will turn a blind eye to the extremely likely possibility of a player being paid and unethical recruiting practices i.e. bringing a coach along.

At the end of the day is is so much better that he stayed local and committed to the new Big East. Nothing would kill the league faster than losing quality recruits to big state schools. It seems the new conference has already done an admirable job with top 100 recruits for 2014.

I think recruits realize that while the league has changed, it's still clearly a major hoops conference with some old traditional teams still playing each other. We may have cut off the giant names i.e. ND, L'Ville but we kept the heart intact i.e. SJU, PC, G'Town, Nova. I saw some Indiana fans tweeting "Guess IW didn't want to come to a major hoops conference...not for everyone".

You missed my point Joe. It's not about the details of this recruitment, because there are going to be details to every recruitment (especially in the eyes of the losing fan bases). If you're looking to follow something that is pure and ethical, bigtime college athletics is not the spot!

My point is that, no matter what the details, I don't particularly enjoy having to listen to the criticisms that we are dirty every time we get a recruit. It's hackneyed and comes off as nothing more than sour grapes. It's the same situation when we are on the other side of it.

Sitting back and taking everything in, if that rumor is really true that Tiny asked Lavin why he didn't have a spot for him on the staff, who was really making the decisions here? It seems like Tiny was holding the kid ransom and would have taken him to whoever offered HIM the job. That's a disgrace. Why can't the kid make the decision on his own? Why is he tied down by the coach? Must be something behind the scene$$$$ we aren't seeing here.

I understand your point, 1512, as it has merits. But this situation was different, as several things were out in the open. It wasn't a bunch of hypothetical or insinuation like the Providence and Cincy fans were doing when the Johnnies landed Sampson, Sanchez, and Obekpa, respectively.

We were Whitehead's destination around this hour on Thursday until the Hall became desperate and threw everything at his camp (including, the kitchen sink). I, very rarely cry foul when the Johnnies lose out to a school for a recruit. But most of us (if not all of us) know what went down yesterday.

The Hall did what they had to do within legal boundaries to get Whitehead. Kudos! But it came off as a sleaze-like move, and it was supposedly done once they felt they weren't gonna garner his services.

I think it had to do with the friendship, loyalty, and, of course, $$$$.

the bottom line is he could have been a kemba walker putting a team on his back to win a championship. we don't have anyone like that now.

however, there's no way i'd jettison coaches with nba experience in favor of a career high school coach like morton. that's crazy.

at least IW will give the big east an additional jolt of credibility.

I have to think that was just a rumor, as even if Tiny did ask Lavin that-- I highly doubt it would have ever gone public.

How do you know we don't have that guy on the team?

You have to also remember Walker did that as a junior. Whitehead will probably only be in college for two years, if not less.

It was a quote from Morton's mouth to Zags....

Tiny Morton said he spoke to Steve Lavin today and asked him whey they didn't a spot for him at #stjbb

I stand corrected, thanks. Tiny has got balls.

But remember, Kemba took uconn on his back to a national titile as a junior. He did not do that his freshman year. We have junior guards ready to make that next step imo. We also have a top 50 guard this year. This will not be a one man operation.

And if what is being said by people around Whitehead true, he will decalre for teh NBA draft after one year, two maximum.

I mean I would have bought Whitehead's comment that he wanted to bring Seton Hall back to prime time, but it didn't even seem like this was his decision.

It's a direct quote from Tiny himself in the Daily News. "I asked Lavin why they didn't have a job for me".

But I'll reiterate. I think the dirty/classless move is letting one of the assistants go whom they just hired. Hiring a player's coach doesn't bother me too much. But we're also not in the same position as the Hall.
Programs starving for attention need to take risks. Hire a HS coach who can get them a stud player, take on a recruit that may have had some run ins with the law, or gamble on a recruit who probably wont qualify...things like that. I don't blame Willard for doing that, his job is on the line. And he didn't break any rules. If he has no problem looking his other assistants in the eye today, then good for him.

I'm just glad we already have some building here with Lavin and don't need to take those risks. Also, fwiw, none of this would be happening if Isaiah didn't really really like Tiny.

At least he has them. Because he has no brains. Admitting to that makes everyone look slimey.

I hear you, MJ. In no way am I commenting on the virtues of this particular recruitment (or any for that matter).

But your point at the end is really what I'm getting at. The Hall decided that their program is at a juncture where they needed to go to another level within the rules to get this done - good for them. We made a decision that our program is not at that kind of critical stage (which we aren't) such that we needed to meet them at that level - good for us. That's really what it comes down to. Anything else - no matter how valid or meritorious - kind of comes off as sour grapes.

I fully believe Isaiah wants to have his old coach around. If the kid and his mom didn't want Tiny to be around, then Seton Halls last minute offer wouldn't have tipped the scales.
Did tiny benefit from his relationship with IW? Sure.
But it's not like Isaiah wasn't asking for this.
