Isaiah Whitehead, SG (Seton Hall verbal)

Whitehead & Jones Steel the Show

There was plenty of talent on hand this weekend, but the two names who stood out above others were clear. 2014 Lincoln (NY) guard Isaiah Whitehead from Juice All-Stars and 2015 Archbishop Carroll (PA) small forward Derrick Jones from We-R1 showed why they are top-50 players nationally.

Ranked No. 19 in the Rivals150, Whitehead has accomplished a lot over the years but is still trying to prove that he is one of his classes' elite. With the goal in mind of being a combo guard, Whitehead showed off his court vision, passing and ability to finish at the rim relentlessly. He started off the weekend with a 38-point performance, followed by numerous performances of over 20 points each.

"I was getting double teamed so I just found my open teammates and they finished," he told Rivals.com recapping his weekend. "I'm an underrated passer and need to work on my jumper, handle and defense. I want to be come a complete guard before getting to college."

Whitehead could take visits this spring, but may elect to take his official visits in the fall and then decide before his high school season. If he were to take those visits today, they would go to Louisville, Kentucky and Syracuse. The Cardinals and Orange seem to be expressing the most interest, and Rick Pitino's constant contact with the guard and his family is very appealing.

The right flavor

Isaiah Whitehead, the highest-ranked 2014 prospect participating in the Pitt Jamfest, has felt the pressure to have a strong tournament with his Juice All-Stars team. Through three viewings by Rivals, the Brooklyn (N.Y.) Lincoln shooting guard has more than impressed with his strong offensive feel for the game and playmaking abilities.

With good size and strength at the guard position at 6-foot-4 and more than 185 pounds, Whitehead makes up for an apparent lack of explosiveness with a combination of physicality, effort and savvy. He uses his body to carve out driving lanes and shield smaller defenders from trying to steal away the ball.

Like many New York City guards, Whitehead is a gifted ball-handler who is comfortable playing on or off the ball at either guard spot. On Saturday, the five-star junior showed promise as a passer, perimeter shooter and a slasher. He played with significantly more aggression as a playmaker than he did on Friday night.

Whitehead is a dangerous scoring threat in both the half- and full-court settings, and has enough creativity to his dribble game to draw the attention of the defense with his ability to change directions and pace to get places off the bounce.

After his final game on Saturday, Whitehead mentioned Louisville, Syracuse, Kentucky, St. John's, Florida and Memphis as some of his top schools. But he was quick to add that several other schools are involved.

Commenting on his college position, Whitehead told Rivals it isn't overly important to him, but that he wants to find a school where he can have the ball in his hands and try to create offense.

If we really want Isaiah, the staff definitely can't afford to slow play this one.

Louisville (who I am guessing is Isaiah's preferred destination) is probably going to go all in for D'Angelo Russell. I would think that they'd take Russell over IW in a heartbeat.

UK is also going after Russell and Rashad Vaughn. I don't think they're that serious about IW.

We have to keep him out of Cuse's hands.

I hope we follow this kid everywhere he plays. I don't see him as a late signer next year.

I was just about to post this, '80. LOL

Braziller also assumes Syracuse are the favorites, but states "a long way to go."

@JayJayUSATODAY: John Calipari just offered 2014 SG Devin Booker (@DevinBook) personally at Booker's high school. Wildcats making their move. #BBN

Like I said in an earlier post, I don't think Kentucky is after IW. They've now offered 3 SGs who are all ranked ahead of him. From what I see, they haven't even offered him yet.

Cut them out and I think we get an official from him.

Problem is, what do we have to show for '14? Cuse has McCullough, presumably Ennis, Coleman, Grant.

We'd probably be losing Jakarr and definitely Orlando. Maybe he'd feel like him and Sheed could be a dynamic backcourt together?

Possibly, a 3-guard lineup (Harrison, Jordan, and Whitehead)?

Right on cue.

And what's you guys take on this - would the Pitino's actually recruit against each other? I'd be more comfortable if it was Minny and not Louisville. :)

Ether way, glad to see Lavin went personally. Great sign!

It's a dog-eat-dog business, so there are gonna be times where they are gonna have to recruit against one another. I'm sure it's something they don't wanna do, but it's part of the business.

Like yourself, I'd rather face Minnesota than Louisville. But we've beaten out some good programs for recruits of late. What better way to land Whitehead by beating out Pitino (Rick, that is).
