....Ultimately it's up to him how important it is to go away, but I think many NYC area recruits grow up spoiled in the biggest market with all the national attention without realizing what a big deal it would be for someone in say Indiana or North Dakota.
A kid growing up in Beverly Hills will likely not understand just how good he has it. An NYC recruit will likely not understand just how valuable NYC is for basketball and media power.
What do you mean by national attention? Outside of NYC, the university (in my experience) is relatively unknown. In regards to basketball, they have their 6-8games each year that are televised nationally, but that is no different than alot of other schools. I'm sorry, but I just don't see this great advantage when it comes to national attention/exposure.
Let me explain the advantage to you. If Maurice Harkless averaged 15 & 7 at St Louis University, he would never had been a First round draft pick. He would not have played and had a monster game at Duke and finally, he would not have played and had a great game against Pitt in the Big East tourney at Madison Square Garden.
St. Johns, in spite of having had some down years, is well known throughout the country in regards to our basketball program. That was one of the selling points in convincing Coach Lavin to take the job. Restore the Tradition !!!!!

Let me explain this to you. Like someone else had pointed out, Harkless could have averaged 15 & 7 at just about any school in the country, and he would have been a first round pick. If you have the talent and skills, scouts will find you, and they will draft you. And the draft nowadays is based so much on potential, stats really have become a non-factor. How much national exposure do you think that damian lillard, cj mccollum, and isiah caanan really got, other than a few games in the NCAA tourny? In regards to being able to play at Madison Square Garden.....while MSG is still the world's most famous arena, it's not the great thing that it once was. The "awe" factor is no longer there. Many of years ago, it was something special to play in there. But now, every major city in America has a huge sports arena.
And I still believe that the majority of people have no idea who or where St. Johns is. The only ones that seem to know are die hard college basketball fans. And even then its always, "Oh yea St Johns, I remember watching them in the 80's" or "Didn't they used to be really good a while back?" This is a 'what have you done for me lately' kind of world that we live in, and I guess St Johns response to that question is 'Not Much'.
Sorry but our national exposure just isn't there.
trying to kyle anderson us“@NYPost_Brazille: Source says Pittsburgh assistant Barry "Slice" Rohrssen will be at Lincoln today for Isaiah Whitehead.”
Not worrying about Pitt, but am sure Slice will break out the Armani pinstripe, John Gotti look. Lol
I don't think Lavin has to sell him as a sf. I think he has to sell him on a 3 guard line up, which would make a lot of sense if he commits.Has a lot of predictions for SHU. What gets me a bit nervous is he ll get more PT at SHU. If Lavin decides to go w a 3 guard line up next year ,Whitehead will get his share of PT here.
Assuming everyone comes back and he's bigger than our returnees, I think the key is selling him on playing SF as a freshman, then moving to his natural position as a soph. Or perhaps not even letting him know that until he's on campus and it's too late to back out.
If he comes we would see some 4 guard sets. This is lavin we are talking about.
Bingo. I feel the exact same way...play your best five no matter who they are.
No inside info, but I have a feeling Whitehead commits during the visit or right after. St. John's is a Final Four caliber team next year and that kind of winning in his hometown will make him a legend.
How good could SJU be in 2015 with a backcourt of Jordan (JR) and Whitehead (SO) to go with seniors Balamou, Jones, and maybe even Obekpa and/or Sampson?

I thought Whitehead has been trying to move in the opposite direction, play more point lately?
I know we have a stacked backcourt but I think that's what you pitch to him and his family; show them how you'll use him as a lead guard and develop his point skills. Because that's what pro teams are going to want to see from him. He's not 6'6 or a deadly enough shooter to only play off the ball.
Convince him that our staff can develop those skills for him, while giving him the freedom to score, and I think that's how you might get him to sign.
Just my two cents, but I do remember reading that he's been trying to improve his point guard play.

Maybe you say that to him to get him here, but Jordan is the point guard out of the two. Together though, damn.

I'm sure we'll use 3 guard lineups, but who do you think the starting point guard is in February? Rhysheed, Branch, or Greene ?

This February? I think it's only a two horse race and I actually think that both of them will be starting, unless injury of course. Branch and Jordan, alongside DLo, with branch being somewhat more of the point guard.
We still have Dom, Sampson,Sanchez and CO, all who warrant lots of PT. That is a quality problem.Good point.Has a lot of predictions for SHU. What gets me a bit nervous is he ll get more PT at SHU. If Lavin decides to go w a 3 guard line up next year ,Whitehead will get his share of PT here.

Agreed. I think we are going to see a decent amount of Branch at point with 2 of Jordan/Dee/Greene off the ball and Jordan at the point with Dee/Greene off the ball.
