Isaiah Briscoe, PG

I have written this before but some of you guys must be kidding with the idea that a recruit is going to be swayed by the drivel we all post. I am sure they have probably sneaked a peek at a game or two for the schools they are seriously considering and will make up their own mind as to how much the current team's play enter into their decision.

I think that we all have to remember that the kids we are recruiting are 16, 17, and 18 years old. They are very impressionable. If the coaching staff is telling them how they are going to help them become better players and possibly make money at this game, and then read a bunch of negative threads on here about how Lavin can't coach and players aren't getting any better. There is no x & o coach on staff. Threads like "We Love Coach Lavin" that rehash things that happened over a decade ago written by someone who has an obvious agenda against Coach Lavin, if you don't think that these things weigh on a recruit's mind, you are terribly naive.
The thread on the Georgia Tech game showed how some posters are only interested in "Instant Gratification". We started the game very bad and posters were ready to throw the coaches, team, and probably even Ron the trainer under the bus. Adjustments were made and we ended up winning by double figures.
I wonder if any of us ever take time to sit back and ask ourselves what it would be like if every aspect of our professional lives was played out in public and there was a message board where anyone could post anonymous comments about our work. That would really be fun.
I have been watching St Johns basketball since I was in elementary school over 50 years ago, received my Bachelors Degree from St Johns and appreciate how the education I received helped me to have a pretty nice life. College basketball is a game played by young men, it is not life or death and I will never treat it as such. This means that I will continue to root for our team and be supportive of the coaching staff withholding judgement until the season is over. Like a previous poster stated, "Let's Be Patient".

Things are different these days. Some of these kids are borderline sociopaths. They try very hard to accumulate followers on Twitters--frequently asking their friends for shoutouts. I would be surprised if every kid isn't reading the recruiting threads in their own name for the schools they are considering. If there was a thread on the internet about you, wouldn't you be curious? I also think every coaching staff in the country reads fan boards.

I am from from naive and I would suggest you get off the Internet and talk to real people if you believe any but the smallest minority of players are even remotely swayed by anonymous posts by fans on a basketball message board.

I believe KOB once stated something similar. I could be wrong, but I believe it was KOB.

I'm not sure how much of a role all of the negative threads play with recruits, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it play a role, if it already has ever played one.

There are many threads that are unindated with negativity. Constant.

Actually, I believe the "Let's Be Patient" thread was started in jest, and the last few posts in that particular thread practically on the same side of the fence, as the OP. But I'll actually remain patient throughout this season 'til there isn't any reason left to remain tolerant.

No, I can honestly say I am not remotely interested in what other people would say about me on the Internet; I have a life to live. When I was in high school I probably wouId have been interested so I do not doubt for a second that kids read about THEMSELVES. That is far different from a kid choosing a college because Sal from Saskatchewan rips a coach.

So what is the point of a message board if not to express ones reaction to the product put on the court? And you or KOB would have me believe that Isiah Briscoe is so unintelligent that he can't see for himself that product but rather would believe posts from people he never met? Sorry, I don't buy it for a second.

I know game threads are going to have a flunctuation of wild, insane posts. Not that I understand all of 'em, but I know how game threads can go. The problem is many threads being unindated or hijacked with negativity.

I never said, I concretely believe all or half of the recruits are being swayed by constant negativity on the board. But there could be an isolated situation where a parent may take things mentioned to heart. I'm just tossing out an hypothetical.

But mase was stating about negativity in the same thread, as a recruit. I know Jumbo was being sarcastic.

The recruits probably read the threads and may get swayed. They definitely look at the product on the court. If they see an undisciplined, underachieving, poorly coached team that will sway them against the school. If they see player development and wins, etc that would be a positive. Time to walk the walk for us.

No, the problem is we're not playing good basketball.
If we had beaten Penn State, and looked like we were getting better, than you wouldn't have those threads.
Don't misdirect your frustration. The product on the court causes the negative threads. When we're winning (sure there are posters who are never happy) but when we're playing well there are countless positive threads.

Maybe, not. But that's opinionated.

I still have a hunch someone would've had a fit, if we had beaten Penn State. I'm not misdirecting anything, other than going by what I see. I understand some folks being frustrated. But I also stand by my belief that each thread doesn't need to be unindated or hijacked with negativity. Message boards aren't meant for such thing. If you're looking for such thing, then I suggest starting a blog.

Lastly, I've noticed negative threads or posts being more prevalant when perceived trouble is on the horizon versus positive threads or posts.

You're right. It's not always proportional. When we're doing well there are always people expecting us to do better, and not enjoying the moment. Some are never satisfied.
And I agree that not every thread needs to be hijacked. But I think in recruiting threads it's better to say nothing at all than to tell other posters "don't say that, you're going to scare off recruits". That always pisses posters off and just extends the conversation.

Shouldn't negative posts be relegated to the threads about the team? Why does a negative post about how the team is playing ever show up in a thread about a recruit that isn't on the team? Unless, of course, there is an agenda?

You state that the statement we are not playing good basketball is "opinionated". Well it happens to be an opinion shared by the head coach and some of the players that have been quoted in newspaper articles. I remain of the opinion that we do have good talent on this team and I am still hopeful we can have a really good season.

Seton Hall is recruiting very hard. Their name is mentioned with every local recruit.

It is vey important that we remain better than Seton Hall. It is not helpful if they have a guy who can both recruit and coach.

Willard isn't a good game coach, and please stop taking backhanded shots at Lavin with every post...

If Willard was coaching here, your posts would be just as tiresome. The guy has sold his soul to keep his job for crying out loud.

Telling other people how to post is hysterical.

Not when the poster in question either directly or indirectly insults Lavin with every single post.
