Is there anything official?

Mullin's contract is reportedly over $2 million per year....Lavin was at $1.8 million....

Maybe we can finally shed the "Mom and Pop" stigma??

:)

The money was always going to be there for the right guy.

On twitter, Roger Rubin is reporting as of 3 minutes ago, that Chris Mullin has accepted, and will be the 20th coach in St. John's history.

The irony

20th coach

As SS&G pointed out Chris wore # 20.

Today is the 30th anniversary of our Final Four game with the Hoya's.

For all you numerologists...

Thanks for posting. Wonderfully positive comments below the article. Sorry to see them mention that they don't think CO and Sheed will be back. Of course that's still speculation. CM could have such a huge impact on the 2 of them as both a coach and mentor. I would take both back in a heartbeat, confident that they would respond really well to having Chris as their coach.

@BrandonTierney: SJU needs to do this right...w/Mullin will come an infusion of legit Wall Street money. The boys will back the program like never before...

BT must have a few cups of Java :)

@BrandonTierney: The vision should be to level Carnesecca Arena, and build a shiny, modern on-campus arena...this represents massive reset button for school.

Don't get the logic here. You play the majority of your home games in the mecca of college basketball. Why waste precious resources on building a new arena in Queens to see St. John's vs. Niagara?

That's not happening. School needs the money elsewhere, big time. More than alumni donors. But regardless, welcome Chris, I don't think I've been interested in a press conference till now.

What if they get together a group of big time Alum to fund a new on campus arena? Isnt' that how Taffner came about, soccer field and baseball field.

Mullin is a such an honest guy. He will sit down with Sheed and tell him if he's ready or not to go to the next level. He will tell him if he's not ready what he needs to do to get there, and how he will help him. If that doesn't do the trick, then it's a lost cause.

For CO, Mullin should tell him that he had his own issues back then, and to shake it off, start with a clean slate, and prove you belong in the NBA draft. Once again, if CO turns his back on that oppty what can you do.

In both cases no one better to deliver that message.

That would be sweet! I just think they need to focus all funds elsewhere. But who the hell knows what one great season will bring us. Hopefully.

Not cheap. UT Austin (which has more money than Yale) will in the next few years demolish the Erwin Center to make way for a new medical school building. A new basketball arena is expected to cost between $300 and $500 million.

"Nebraska, for instance, was able to build the 15,147-seat Pinnacle Bank Arena for only $179 million in 2013, while Oregon became the first school to spend more $200 million on an on-campus facility when it opened Matthew Knight Arena in 2011. It seats 12,364."

Air Mullin

His plane just went over my house.

I waved my Redmen hat and I could swear he gave me a "We Are #1" sign.

At least I think it was his index finger - that plane was heading really fast towards JFK.

Godspeed, Coach Mullin.

TXrRedmen, you eerily sound like Sarah Palin talking about Putin's plane en route to Washington DC. :eek:hmy:

If St.John's were to construct a new on campus arena it should seat 8,500. Bigger games could be played off campus at MSG or Barlays.

Monmouth's new 4,100 seat arena cost $57M. Someone may be able to provide a reasonable estimate of what an 8,000 +/- arena would cost.

Maybe not our most popular games but we certainly play the majority of our home games at Carnesecca. This year was 10 out of 18 home games at Carnesecca. It certainly leaves a lot to be desired watching a game there but I do understand the huge cost and the fact that they wasted a bunch of money on the remodel.

What a trip today has been. Everyone who knows me, knows I'm a fan of the Johnnies. Mullin's arrival has led to more texts than a wedding and a funeral!

No one in the Bronx has cared much 'bout this team since Malik and Felipe. Most of my friends became Hoya, Duke, or Cuse fans in the 80s/90s. The younger people I work with, they don't even know of St. John's (outside of basketball scenesters of course).

Today, this FEELS BIG. The city is responding to this in a big way. Hell, he did more recruiting in NYC just by taking the job than Jarvis/Lav ever did. Chris is one of them...AAU, Catholic League, etc. Yet he has reached levels they could only dream of. And I appreciate another poster mentioning his life experiences and how they could apply in cases like Obepka's.

He's so engrained in the sports world that he transcends the network battles, the conference alignments, etc. Things can turn out any kind of way, but after these past two days...this just seems to click. And part of me thinks Chris is making it a PERSONAL mission to save his once storied program that he still connects with so strongly.

Thanks to Lavin for his role in helping to wake the Sleeping Giant...that's what Chris feels like, the arrival of our Giant.

PS: Leave Carnesseca Arena alone. Let that dump continue to be a hellhole for any team who plays there. It's a dump, but it's our dump, and it's not too kind too visitors. :) Besides...MSG will be selling a few more tickets in coming years...

peace. Enjoy. :)
