Is Obekpa Next? No! He's staying!

next year has potential as long as Jordan is on the team but we'll need good leadership to get the guys playing team ball and some good fortune with some graduate transfers since there are not a lot of juco options that could be immediate contributors. We need some high IQ recruits that can come in and play solid immediately rather than long term projects like Obekpa with very high potential.
Make Archie Miller an offer he can't refuse over and above his recent contract extension.

I guess I won't be needing this avatar any more.

Any suggestions?

I'm just debating about unleashing a scathing post about how I feel. But deciding against it for the moment.

This team is a weak mid-major at this point. Might as well just hire Norm again and complete the death spiral into total irrelevance.

This loss hurts us so much more than losing Sampson. Wow.
Bright side...six scholarships open for transfers.

But D1 transfers have to sit out a year, no? Next year will be a disaster.

This is the year of the graduate transfer...immediately eligible.
There are several scenarios where we end up a better team than we were with Sampson and Obekpa--some where we are FAR beter--but who knows how likely they are. It seems like the same four schools get every single transfer.

Here's my question.....

Is he transferring because of his diminished playing time, or was his reduced playing time due to Lavin finding out that he was thinking of transferring?

The product on the court would support your opinion but there aren't many weak mid majors returning 4 top 60 players next year.

I agree Paul. As long as we have Jordan, Harrison, Branch and Greene we can still be good. A real coach will utilize Greene for what he is, a spot up shooter as a back up 2 guard behind Harrison and I like Branch's game backing up Jordan. I also think that the backcourt of Jordan and Harrison can dominate next year. What we need now is few big men who play defense, rebound the hell out the ball, score garbage baskets and make foul shots. If we have that along with Pointer, Jones and Balamou we can still be good in this league. We all know that College Basketball is a guards game and our guards are very good. Get Howland or, like you said, Archie Miller in here and we can be good.

If Baylor and Oregon are the 2 possible landing spots than you really have to question the kid's makeup. Talk about two shady programs.

Is this really a surprise?

Don't you recall Obekpa's handlers pushing Chris towards Oregon about a week before he popped for SJU? Oregon wasn't even on his list but they were granted an official visit at the last minute of his recruitment. Chris pulled out of the visit at the 12th hour.

Univer$ity of Oregon = Univer$ity of Nike

I have no doubt that they make illegal recruiting contacts because they are always the first on everyone's transfer list.

Add Baylor to the mix and it smells from here to Staten Island.

That being said, Chris is a grown man and he has a right to do what he wants.

Most of Obepka's blocks came from players getting by SJU defender's. Anytime someone he was guarding made a move in
the post there was a good chance of a foul. No offense whatsoever. Couple of good games. He is a great player against a smaller team.
Good riddance. Won't be seeing him in the pros. What are the odds on Lavin leaving ??

The weakness throughout the Lavin regime appears two fold. Everyone can go on about coaching deficiencies and that's fine and defendable. However the bigger issue seems to have been driven by personalities and a lack of control of players on a commitment and emotional level. That's a two way street, it's on the players AND the staff. You're right, it won't be impossible to replace Jakarr and Chris's actual production (vs. their potential) but a key will be to bring in personalities that are gong to work better in whatever team culture they are trying to develop.

Grown men don't appear in public with that haircut.

But seriously, they don't mutiny on their team either. Given how this has played out it's obvious there was no alternative.

Steve Lavin

Don't tempt me

Wondering if I can find a pic of Steve Lavin in Univ of Cal jersey.

Oh it's coming.

He gone according to several reputable news sources (CBS) and the onehttp://zagsblog.com/.

Wow didn't think he would really leave. He has to sit out a year, and then work his way into a starting line up. Doesn't seem like a great career move.. Oh well, onward we go.

Chris, nor any of the players, "mutinied" on their team.

I said it before- the players and their attitudes and efforts were just a reflection of the coaching.

Jakarr choking out the Robert Morris player was the equivalent of Tyson biting Holyfield's ear. Yeah, he wanted to win but he didn't have a clue how.

I find it funny how many people are bashing Obekpa and his game right now.

Rico Hines is head of player development, no? Worked with NBA players and was on the GS Warriors, no?

Some of the comments here are comical.

Just got off the plane in Dallas for the Final 4. On the flight over I was thinking about whether I will ever attend one that SJU is participating in. We seem so far from even making the tournament never mind ever being a factor. So depressing.

First we['ll have to disagree. If Chris actually refused to reenter a game that is a reflection on him and him alone. I've had some shitty bosses too. But if I ever told my boss I refused to do my job, no matter how bad that boss was at his job, I'd be out of mine. As I said in another post I'm not defending the staff, they certainly have shown some deficiencies, but if college athletes want to be treated like employees they have to act like employees as well.

@JayOn_1: 2 more players could leave the program also as a result of CO leaving
