Is Cragg the right AD for the job?

What specifically can be done, given the space limitations, to improve the athletic infrastructure on our campus, should the financing become available?

The Cadillac solution that has been discussef is to enlarge tafner to fill in the space between CA and tafner, things like athlete nutrition services, coach's offices, team locker rooms, improved workout facilities, and even study halls. Students would be moved from using tafner to a new student health center to be constructed. The total ticket is high and likely will be scaled back. Jsj would have a more thorough knowledge and definitely mike Cragg can be contacted directly. It's a heavy lift but Rick knows we need it, and Shanley is supportive of anything that will restore our marquis athletic program provided new philanthropy builds it. In essence paying RP is an investment to spur that philanthropy and not a down payment on more to come from the university endowment.

To answer an earlier question, the practice court used by the men's team is up to par, but when athletes make a recruiting visit certain ateas are avoidec that are subpar.

Specifically the plan is to construct a two story addition in the walkway between Taffner and Ca is where Lapchick statue sits. As previously written here, the plan is to make the new structure for one of the hoops programs as the other will take over their present facilities. Top floor would be new coaches offices and meeting rooms and below would be enlarged locker rooms and weight room. After that is completed, the process of knocking down the wall between the present m/w locker rooms and constructing one big team room and that program would then take over then complete Taffner 2nd floor offices and meeting room. The sports medicine and hot/cold tub areas will not be affected. Plan is both teams will continue to utilize both of those rooms as is presently done. If and when Rec sports moves out of Taffner offices & locker rooms completely, that gives hoops programs additional space to use.IMG_5200.jpeg

Very fluid, but that's an earlier plan. Likely no second floor addition no extension. Another massive building project for the university - hope we can get this underway ASAP whatever that means.

Better than nothing I guess, but only one level in that footprint doesn't seem all that big. Hope they do it right the first time.
Yes not their usual half ass job. Even if you do a state of the art facility in 5 years it is basically obsolete and you have fallen behind your competitors. If they can't do it right hold off until you can. Taffner was not up to par from the get go.

I still haven't gotten an answer from anyone on what positives Cragg has brought to SJU in his time here.
A redfans Committee is being formed as we speak . They will investigate Cragg’s tenure and present his accomplishments .

Who is on theCommittee ?

The Usual Suspects .

The reason I said it is fluid is that what they do largely depends on how generous we as fans are. If you want to list accomplishments of cragg, making facilities a priority began with Cragg upon his arrival. There was a study of facilities done and an initial plan drawn which i saw but since I'm not an employee with a vested interest did not commit it to memory as others here obviously were more involved/impacted.

It is An evolving project because other considerations reveal themselves and are appropriately prioritized and added to the overall cost of the project, hence plan adjustments.

In my opinion the people at St. John's have to be twice as smart as peers at well endowed colleges. At Villanova you can do a $100 million arena makeover and when the men's coach doesn't like the locker room completely redo a perfectly good one.

Here we had a $10 million promise from Repole towards a $20 arena makeover. The donation never materialized which is a good thing because it may have been well below what nova did. Whether you'd csll that half assed you'd half to ask the benefactor.

The more we raise, the more we do. Philanthropy is everyone's job, like the victory gardens and scrap metal drives of WWII. It sounds like a political campaign pitch for just urging everyone "to do their fair share" but on this project it's a reality.

Being minimally involved with the new health sciences building project, there will be nothing half assed about it. We are in good hands there, and in the AD.

Beast , did you sign the Steel Beam for the new Sciences Building legibly ?
Or , did you use the usual scribble the Athletes give when asked for Autographs ?

Again, no one is demanding Cragg gets fired. We are pointing out his errors as the head of the athletic department.

Just curious, when is it fair to criticize a the AD, when the athletic programs are struggling? One of those programs — soccer — was at one time not long ago, a jewel.

Why can’t we expect Cragg to jumpstart soccer again. There is no excuse about facilities or the coach. The soccer program has a strong baseline from which to work.
Maybe move this to soccer thread. I was under the impression that Masur is a top coach.

From SJU bio:
Beast your lips to gods ear, while Ed Kull warms up in the bullpen ready to pitch the ninth.
What makes you think

Hey Sly, I was so annoyed at myself, because I wasn't sure I would be asked to sign but brought along gold and silver fine point indelible Sharpie markers if I got the chance. When called up to sign, I completely forgot about them and instead used a fat black marker provided. Being left handed it's easy to smudge what I sign, and the fat marker made it more difficult. I gave it my best though. Really was an honor to do that, especially when I saw the girder go into place, guided and secured by iron workers such as my dad. Most of us who attended SJU were among the first in our families to get college degrees. Being able to afford a private Catholic education at a cost far less than area Catholic colleges has created a debt of gratitude which little by little I hope to repay.

Great information and it is refreshing to see ambitious planning going on.
A student health center is a fantastic idea!!! Perhaps next to the dining hall where students can work off the calories.😀
