Is Cragg the right AD for the job?

All you need to know regarding Cragg’s ability to make the right decision

"Coach Anderson is one of the most respected coaches in college basketball and there is no doubt in my mind that he is the perfect fit to lead our program," Cragg said in his statement
What's he really going to say there, though? "My basketball IQ-deficient bosses completely hamstrung me and I made a desperation hire on the late-coming recommendation of an old friend."

And then right after he said that, he followed up with "oh and by the way, we're so sure that he's the perfect fit, that we're raising ticket prices by 30%". And the fan base responded with "thank you sir may I have another".

I remember after fran was let go, didn't SJU call Jarvis for his recommendation for a coach, and he says he's available, and so SJU hires him, and yes he was a good game coach, but he didn't recruit local hs kids. He went the transfer route. They won the NIT with him, it that was taking away because they paid Abe Keita (or something alone that line.
Why not say ok, we'll get back to you, and keep looking to see if a better coach was available.

Then four years ago, capel calls and recommends Anderson saying oh he never had a losing season, well how did this turn out?

If there is a coaching search, yes listen to recommendations, but you keep searching then at the end of the search you choose, if another coach is better then the recommendation or not. Don't just get a recommendation then hire that coach.
If you don't know what you're doing and gotta listen to other on who to hire then maybe you shouldn't be the AD.

The coach was Peter Boyle, I mean Phil Martelli who was a St. Joe’s

Yeah I am having a hard time understanding the criticism of Cragg saying nice things about his hire of Anderson. What the hell was he supposed to say?

So are we saying that every AD who hires a coach and later has to fire that coach should also be fired because he hailed that original hire at the time of the hiring? Lol.

Bill Scholl of Marquette hired Wojo. He then had to fire him. Should he have been fired too? You don't think he had high praise for Wojo at the time of the hire?

Some of you are trying too hard to blame everyone you can because the MBB team is struggling. We get it. But just because SJU doesn't magically do everything a message board wants done or doesn't have the foresight to understand how something can fail like a message board revisionist evidently can doesn't mean they are all incompetent.

Relax. Stop trying to read something into every quote from a coach or AD and act like you have a gotcha moment.

I don’t think the AD criticism over comments are geared towards positive comments alone. You are exactly right, he had to say good things.

The ahha moments come when past positive comments have no accountability when the program is struggling. Where is the accountabilty with coach and Cragg? Come on, Greg Berhalter had was in the news for something he did when he was 19 yrs old. The positive comment articles are from 4 years ago. People have right to criticize when low standards become the norm and the deliverables of why someone was hired have not been met.

As coach C whould say, "you have to have the horses". Anderson has not proven that he can recruit a top level players. He may be a respected coach but we need top level players.

Methinks some people here have never had to go through any kind of media training.

Its all really simple guys, when our next coach is hired. Do NOT praise the hire or say anything nice about it.

Because in 4 years if the hire does not work out, that makes you stupid

Those the rules.

Either be able to tell the future, or we don't want you on red.fans!

Come on now thats not what Im saying at all. There are many issues with Cragg other then his Bromance with Anderson. Have you forgotten about his inability to schedule a decent OOC schedule which impacts the team each year come tourney time. Two years ago it costs the team a Dance bid, last year even an NIT bid.

Go back and look at the thread when CMA got hired and I'd be willing to bet almost everyone was ecstatic with the hire including me
I think a lot of that had to do with the fact that nobody other than Tim Cluess wanted the job.
