We'd be crazy not to have Sellers in at the end of close games as he is by far our best free throw shooter
It's not "by far" though. It's a small sample size, but right now, Sanon is at 91.7% FT/Sellers 88.9%/Darling 85.7%/Jackson 81.8%.

I don't think the selling point for Sellers closing games is the free throws. It would have to be steady, veteran play. But he's looked lost. I don't blame him -- Pitino is snip/snapping him with being a point guard or not.

And, for Mitchell, the free throws make it frankly disqualifying.

Stating the obvious, but it is very important for SJU to have a successful Vegas Tourney and remaining OOC games. I think we all agree we are a Dance team, but there are only a modest amount of BE games that will help push the seeding needle.

Great 24-25 season, but we only ended up a round of 32 team, “Luisgate” aside. We received a ton of hype off season adding some big portal names, but time is of the essence to successfully close out play v quality teams prior to BE play. We don’t need to win them all, but getting our fair share seems critically important. Let’s start with ISU and get the momentum ball rolling.

I was looking at a full year of free throw shooting. Last year:
Sellers 90%
Darling 82%
Jackson 73%
Sanon 71%
Granted Sanon did not play a full season but more representative than 4 games this year.

You made this something not intended. I was simply questioning how they arrived at any metrics given limited data.

Yet in your ramblings you proved the point. “They are better than we are”. Says who? My point is it’s so early in the season NO ONE has any idea. In fact the game is pick ‘em. Too early to define who is who.

Then to label me as a “homer” and to pat yourself on the back is laughable. I made no prediction on the game. No idea how good SJU or Iowa State is. A little humility and less bluster never hurt anyone either.

Sorry 88 - meant to post this last night but that wasn't intended to be a shot at you. It was just your post provided the opportunity to make the point, which is that (like all fan bases) ours can be a bit myopic. This year fanned by pre-season rankings based more on potential than current reality. But anyway despite being a quote of your post was not meant to be directed at you personally.

We'll see how it goes this week - hopefully the pre-season polls will be right earlier in the season rather than later.

Thanks LMF. I just don’t want to be labeled as fanboying for SJU. Like many I am just looking forward to great “tests” just like Iowa St to see EXACTLY where we sit. Believe me I still have PTSD for 30 plus years of empty fandom to be a homer. Homer Simpson maybe but not a homer. 😉

Free throws at end of games is sometimes a whole different animal
Coaches that use stations in practice sometimes have players shoot fts in twos to get better used to being ready to make 2 as opposed to getting your stroke down and hitting 20 or more in a row.

Still and all, there is the "ice water in your veins" factor. Older fans remember how Paul Silas, a bad ft shooter, seemed to become Jerry West or Rick Barry late in games at the charity stripe.

For younger college players, it's often a baptism by fire to put a very good ft shooter on the line in huge moments. In recent history, Zubs, Brady, and Lefty all had painful experiences. For Brady it got into his head all freshman year.

As fans it's super important to show support for our kids when they fail. Rick, at Sunday Supper this year, mentioned the ovation zuby got in the Bahamas the next day. Great job by our fans who traveled.

On plane to Vegas. Looking forward to seeing some of you. Go Johnnies

I like this post. I remember Chris Mullin missing a key free throw in the ncaa tournament against temple. Was an early exit from the NCAAs that year but never blamed him and never would have done anything but support our guys.
