Showed up on The Athletics first Bubble Watch of the season. Words on the Big East in general and St. John's specifically pasted below. Between this and showing up in the "First 4 Out" of Lunardi's Bracketology should be encouraging. Although we're all disappointed in the last 2 losses, we've set ourselves up to make a real run for an at-large bid which most of us thought was a pipe dream coming into the season. Hopefully we get better as the season goes on and can steal a few games we aren't expected to win starting with tomorrow...
Big East
Nine Big East teams are most likely going to the NCAA Tournament or will hope to still be in the picture come Selection Sunday. That’s without counting Providence, with its No. 100 NET ranking and 9-6 record, which nonetheless opened conference play with wins over two of the teams on this list, and might well get there eventually.
There are 10 teams in the Big East. Insane.
Should be in: Butler, Villanova, Seton Hall, Creighton, Marquette
Work to do: Xavier, Georgetown, St. John’s, DePaul
St. John’s (11-4, 0-2; NET: 63, SOS: 109): At the time, St. John’s hiring of Mike Anderson, a coach who had been decent at Arkansas but left even Razorbacks fans, who loved him, wanting more, was not received with much enthusiasm. Shrugs, mostly. Yet Anderson has carved out one of the pleasant surprises of the season, a Red Storm team playing his brand of exciting, pressing basketball to excellent effect. St. John’s already owns wins over West Virginia and Arizona, some of this excellent league’s very best nonconference work, and began Big East play 11-2 before opening with losses to Butler and Xavier to start conference play. There’s a genuine platform for an eventual bid here, but the Red Storm still have lots more to do to be more than just a pleasant surprise.
