If we don't get a bid?

Nope
What will change under the current regime? Mullin has shown he has no interest in changing the way he operates. This year was as good a group of talent as I believe this staff is capable of bringing in and we are squarely on the bubble with it.
He thinks Mullin is a better coach than Lavin. Credibility shot. 'Nuff said.
]

Nope. My credibility is fine, thank you. It's hard to say if Lavin is a worse or better coach than Mullin. I remember Laving doing a lot of really stupid stuff. This year, we've seem some really pretty basketball. Some really horrid stuff too. Seem fairly consistent for St. John's basketball for the last twenty-five years. I generally think Mullin is a better coach than Lavin, but we can debate that. That's fine if we agree to disagree.

Also, you can go back and check, I did not advocate for a change away from Lavin. I did not want him to get canned. I only finally acquiesced to the idea at the very end. I was advocating for more years for Lavin, similar to what I'm advocating now.

You can't change coaches every four years. That's all I'm arguing. That's my tenet.

Firing a coach, every four years, as is often advocated on this board is a completely stupid way to operate a franchise. This is a franchise. Six years at a minimum per coach, unless that coach is negligent. Lavin, for those who have a better memory, was probably more more negligent in managing the franchise. "Insiders' on this board have alluded to that. This coaching staff, as a whole, is not negligent.

Again, constantly changes coaches absolutely guarantees mediocrity. Some of you, not all of you, just advocate change to stir the pot. I hope the board of trustees / the AD / and other key decision makers don't fall for such tomfoolery.

Six years for Mullin, or any coach, at a minimum. That's what I'm advocating.
Thanks for proving my point.

Sorry Beast but if all that mattered were wins and losses then this particular staff has not met expectations. We’ve had one decent season in four years and it is not going to end as many expected. As you yourself said we don’t have enough this and enough that, etc. It’s the staff’s responsibility to build the roster. I no longer care about the staffs character insinuations. It’s about the JOB. We argue for the sake of arguing and it’s gotten us nowhere. I will keep wondering that this may be as good as it gets with this staff. If that’s enough for you God bless you. What I think or say doesn’t matter as I now have chosen to look at the situation only from the outside. Those of you that are still on the inside can provide future fan positive insights. Best wishes.

I've maintained from day 1 this season that to me the goal was RIP through OOC, which they did, then win 10 or 11 games and secure a bid. I did adjust it to 9-9 and a bid. To me 8-10 and a bid is still disappointing. Coaching acumen and recruiting success are fair game to assess, and I never once dispute or argued against such critique.

The personal swipes against staff to me are off limits as are their families. I'm as disappointed as you, but also know with this roster sustaining an injury would be difficult to impossible.
Thanks for proving my point.
Perfecto. Then we are in agreement. Two more full seasons to evaluate Mullin.

in all honesty, we as fans need to treat this situation as any other coach. Yes, he was the greatest, and will always be the greatest but as a coach he needs to be held accountable for the lack of success of the program. 20 win season is great, but the expectations for this roster are high as they should be. In years past we've given him a pass. If they make the tourney and I'd say advance to next round or sweet 16 that would be somewhat a success. Not making the dance or squeaking in and getting eliminated in 1st round is a huge disappointment.

If we win 4 more (again, not including NIT), then the season would certainly be a success.
Sorry, but where is this team finding 4 wins? Just don't see it, maybe not even another this season.

Huh? This program has been terrible for the better part of a quarter of a century!
You want to snub your nose at an NCAA tournament bid?

In my opinion fashioning a team that can make the tournament is a huge win. That's is how crappy of a program we have been since the Jarvis debacle, with a couple of bright spots in between.

I don't expect to get 4 more wins, was just replying to somebody who mentioned that scenario. Was just saying that if (a major "if") we get 4 more wins (not counting NIT), then that'd be a success and Mullin should get another couple years.

Did you miss our best three defenders fouling out? If one of our players even thought about playing defense they were whistled. How do you coach around that?

I don’t want to hear that the refs weren’t a problem. Heron has over 100 college games and has fouled out of five non-OT games. In those five games be played between 26 and 41 minutes before fouling out. He played 11 against DePaul! Do you think he decided to change his defense after 100 games at the end of his junior year? The FT differential in the last two games is unprecedented this conference season.

The reffing this season, and particularly in the last game, has been terrible.
Mullin needed (needs) to devise a Zone defense to protect players in foul trouble and to force the opposing team to adjust. Lack of height goes back to who we recruited.
As far as the coaching staff, Cragg needs to outline his expectations with recruiting efforts and assistant coaches. It seems as though our staff is much like our roster, unbalanced. Who recruits? Who is the defensive coach? Ball handling and playmaking?

While I'm glad you are back and all you have to try to disengage from staff as if anything said is a personal affront. If this was a state school you would even have access to their contract terms, personal finance information, home addresses, etc. These guys are public figures earning millions to teach 13 kids the skill of basketball. While your penchant for being a defender of staff privacy is extremely unusual as these guys live in glass houses, your curiosity about the personal lives and identity of posters is troubling. Why engage on a personal level with strangers?. Because of the intrusive curiosity of a very few here the Board is no longer secure in my opinion. I'm sure your donations to redmen.com and the red and white count for something but to personalize every single observation by others is not worth the discourse effort. Sorry but most of us are now too old and tired to fight this fight any longer. Some of us are too busy trying to stay alive and keeping our family safe and healthy for these conversations to matter. Nothing anyone says here matters to the staff, school or anyone else. They are words on a message board. If everyone accepted that it would be nice.

Giants went 9-7 and got into the playoffs as a wildcard but won the super bowl all the same. Postseason matters more than anything. March is everything. Let’s see what we do
Styles also make fights. If our staff won't change their gameplan against decent-to-legit bigs, then our trip to the NCAA's could be short lived if we face a particular team early.
It's my perception that earlier in the year we were doing much better with that with our guards doubling down in the post once the ball went in there. They harassed big men, sometimes stealing the ball, forcing bad shots, or forcing turnovers. It seems as though we've stopped doing that completely. Your thoughts?
We're still trying to attempt that particular gameplan, But teams with decent-to-legit bigs are either setting screens (whether, false or legit) and rolling to the basket to get mismatches on our team (Govan killed us with false screen actions during our game at MSG). We're either fouling or their bigs are kicking it out to open shooters (usually, in the corner.... Providence worked us in the right corner during our game at MSG).

The defense you mentioned will still occasionally work with a team where we don't necessarily have to respect their big(s) to score. But if a team has any big(s) who is a real threat to score, then this doesn't work. Teams will slow the game down and go to work on us in the post. Eventually, it'll create open looks from the perimeter.

We don't exactly play fundamental defense. Our defense is based on steals, deflections and occasionally blocks.
It creates a bunch of slapping and fouling, which we've been a lot of lately. We've become an easy prepare, especially with teams who can easily exploit us with decent-to-solid big.
As we both know, basketball is all about taking advantage of the assets you have. We are a small team with a short bench , ironically similar to Lavin constructed teams albeit no obekpa here.

Without height, the best you can do is bust it on defense, swarm and attack and make superior skill and athleticism an asset. Against patient opponents with skilled bigs and a plan to spread the floor, it becomes much less effective.

Bottom line, not enough height, not enough depth. All the Coaching in the world can't correct that. As soon as we go to our bench, bigs or not, there is a big dropoff
I'd expect the staff to at least adapt and adjust. Not continue with the same game plan.
Exactly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How bout adjusting to one guy lighting us up for 36 in one freaking half. Maybe double him everytime he gets the ball? Distract him a bit. YOU GOT TO DO SOMETHING.

Then why even play the freaking game, tell the refs FU and just walk off.

If I was coaching I’d calmly tell the refs if they didn’t stop I’d forfeit and walk off. The reffing was that bad. Heron fouled out in 11 minutes! He’s never done that in twice the minutes in his entire career.

If we are being targeted by refs, what can we actually do? Mullin won't stop acting the way he does, and it's not like refs will suddenly forgive him even if he did. The pettiness of the refs may haunt us for years. Hopefully they just suck in general and there isn't a vendetta. I don't pay much attention to the refs in other BE games, so maybe I should start.

The refs have nothing to do with our underachieving the expectations we all had. They bailed us out against VCU, and hurt us against SH. It should not have come down to the refs that game, as our best FT shooters blew foul shots to put it away.]

I watched some of the games twice, and our guys foul a lot because of mismatches. The switch everything creates mismatches for everyone, either one based on size or quickness. Clark switches against a guard on the perimeter, and he plays defense with his hands instead of his feet. Quick whistle. Our close outs on threes are late, and we foul on those. Have to lead the league in giving up 4 point plays. We have no rim protector, so our guys foul on drives. For me, we don't have guys that move their feet enough, or are too slow or too undersized for the position they are defending.

Playing a zone would mitigate our foul and manpower issues.
As far as the officiating is concerned, our AD has to counsel Mullin on his behavior, while also making it a priority to raise the biased or incompetent referee complaint with the commissioner and director of officiating. It's not our most pressing problem, but the referee issue is legitimate.
