If we don't get a bid?

We still have a chance but what if we don't get in. Obviously the NIT but is that enough in year 4? In my opinion it is not; based off of preseason expectations from pretty much everyone on here we have underachieved all things considered. Even if we get in the tournament at .500 that wasn't the expectation this year with our talent and the league being wide open. If we win the Big East tournament than ok that would be impressive otherwise its been pretty meh so far.
I'll be ok with a first round exit but damn we have 5 guys who already are or on pace to be 1,000 point scorers in college. Ponds is almost at 2k, Heron came in one, Clark made it this year, Simon and LJ will get there next year. We don't have depth but a lot of the best programs only run 6 maybe 7 guys a night. We shouldn't need much more than our starting five this year. I actually predicted us to finish 4th this year not because of our talent, I just knew that this staff wouldn't maximize what they had.
In my opinion if we miss the dance Mullin has to go. I know thats nothing new but I haven't been saying this all year like some have. I have sat back and waited to see how this season played out. He wont get an extension regardless and will be a lame duck next year. HS recruiting has been like pulling teeth with this staff imagine with an uncertain future.
Can't be afraid to restart if its not working out. We have an actual AD now, I trust he would bring in a coach with an actual track record of success. Ed Cooley was coaching at Fairfield before PC got him, there are good coaches to be had. I think its already too late for the experienced assistant coaching hire. Ideally that needed to happen before year 3. Opinions?

Behave don't get the thread locked lol.

I agree, no bid Mullin should go. As for an extension, I suspect Mullin will not want one. I don't think he wants to make a career of coaching. I believe he thought he would come in,easily recruit based on his reputation, turn the program around and leave the program in a blaze of glory. Well we know how that has not worked so far.

Here is what im thinking based on each the possible outcomes.

1. We miss the tournament - He has to be fired even if we win the NIT, thats not good enough. No one to blame but himself and his stubborn ways.

2. We barely make the field - Lets say we finish 8-10 and have to win a game or two in the BET to sneak in. Play in game or 1st rd exit. He should still be fired if you ask me but he will probably be allowed to return with no guarantees after next season, sink or swim.

3. At least .500 - Finishing 9-9 or 10-8 should  have us in safe with a low seed regardless of the BET. We lose in the 1st Rd. He should be allowed back and ideally hire that assistant if he's smart. Tournament or bust next year.

4. Win the BET - This would actually impress me enough to give him a year or two extension even with a 1st round exit.

5. 2nd rd exit - A year or two extension for sure.

6. S16 and beyond - Sign him through the 22-23 season so that he is good for the next 4 yrs and can recruit comfortably

Mullin will not get an early extension offer. Too many question marks at this point. Recruiting has been haphazard. Coaching mediocre. Staff not Big East quality. Temperament is troubling. He will not be fired. He won 20 games without a bench so he would get one more year to see if he turns the corner. It's all up to him.

I agree I was just asking for my own entertainment, I like reading others opinions about the program. If we dont get in and hes back thats a damn shame.

Power of positive thinking!![/quote]

Backing in because of a weak bubble is vs to me, gotta win 1 of the next 3.
Backing in the NCAA tourney isn't good enough, and I say win one in tournament or bust.

If we don't Dance, he'll need to step down. I've said that since beginning of the season.

We should make it, though.

The NCAA tournament is probable but it depends on the health of the team. Heron or Ponds not 100 percent could make us an NIT team.
We would never fire our basketball legend. If Mully leaves it would be mutual or this program will never attract another high quality candidate.

Sad because we were one good center from being a top 10 team dispite an inexperience staff . A good def center that rebounded and had moves around the rim
Makes us a very good team. Perhaps next yr,seems like our center position will improve Kietea and Roberts is not the answer although Roberts is so raw it is hard to tell if he could develope offensive skills

Coach gets two more full seasons to be evaluated, regardless of what happens this year.

Tourney or not, the staff has to be realigned and expectations set to be more in line with other programs. As for expectations, that means every coach, from the top down, is dedicated and available year round to the improvement of the program. Another experienced, full time recruiter has to be added, and an assistant with years of success at the college level has to be one of the changes. A Dunlap type,

I get it. Some people are going and just really want CM fired. So you’re setting expectations to a point to justify most likely scenarios.

I’ve said before that I would never favor CM being forcibly removed or fired. He’s earned the right to go on his own. I belief he would resign if he knew he had exhausted his abilities and the results proved to be unsatisfactory.

Having said that, despite the demeanor issues, halting recruiting, coaching lapses, etc it is undeniable that there has been certain yet slow improvement every year. The talent level albeit unbalanced is far and away better than it was and though not deep enough 1-5 at least on par with the other top teams in the conference.

It is ridiculous that on the verge of our first bid in a long time that the long knives come out. Let the season play out. I’m sure those
Of you who will be unsatisfied with any coach who does not produce a championship in his first few years will have plenty to criticize once the season ends, regardless of outcme.

IMO NCAA bid or not Mullin returns but I feel that accepting an NIT invitation could be a disaster. This team reminds me of Lavin's team that played Robert Morris at CA in the NIT which was the worst display of effort in CA's history.
Both that team and this year's team always played like they felt they were much better then they actually were and the NIT would be beneath them. Stay home if that situation arises.

I agree with this. I’m not a huge fan of CM the coach. There have been technical coaching issues during his tenure that are cause for concern. However, it is wildly premature to speculate about coaching changes, with what ifs. As previously stated, let it play out.

When we play Georgetown I think about how good our team would be with Govan. Top ten for sure.

DanV, I believe Cooley is a Providence native and it was his Dream job . Fairfield , in Conn., was a good NE pathway for him to get the Friars gig . That being said, he’s at the right level School for him . Don’t think he would do as well in the bigger BE Towns like NY, DC, Philadelphia., Chicago , but, that’s just a opinion . Friar fans can be brutal to their own Coaches or other School Coaches . They dumped Tim Welsh and Beano Davis pretty quickly , when fortunes declined . And , Davis had been National Coach of the Year at Drake before taking the PC job . No doubt Friar fans , though maybe not this year, have been happy with Cooley and making the NCAA for the last 4-5 years . He does a very good job getting kids that might not be too 100 but, still can play and fit into his system . He likes Big Guards and big, athletic front court players . And , plays a tough inside game .
