I don't think Lavin is the answer...

What an idiotic post. If Moe stayed we would be a Sweet 16 team and Lavin would be a genius. There is a lack of skill on this team...let Lavin have one freaking season with a junior he had for three years.

Of course Lavin deserves more time. I'm just skeptical that he can deliver, especially in the new league (which is ironic, since it won't be as tough as the old league).

Not sure we would have been Sweet 16 (or NCAA Tournament) with Moe here. Still lack outside shooting, and would still have no point guard to give these guys the ball in the right positions.

WE win 20 games or more if MO stayed

Moe couldn't have left if he had gotten a normal freshman introduction and appropriate minutes. When you have six guys however there's little choice. Same thing happened with Omar Cook when Jarvis handed him the ball. You can get 8 apg when you play 35 minutes. This crap is nothing new for SJU and it wouldn't shock me if Sampson flew if a bird gets in his year. This is all the tragedy of poor planning and roster mismanagement. Lavin has somehow managed to attain untouchable status and a cult following here. To date any real doubts about the coach subjected posters to ridicule and insults. Sometimes it sucks to be right but all you have to do is watch objectively to see what's really going on. To me the Harrison thing was the last straw. Not because he probably didn't deserve it but because it amounted to throwing in the season for everyone who still had some hope for a decent finish. Things like that don't happen overnight and even DLos' grandma knows mistakes were made on both sides. I refuse to believe that this outcome wasn't unavoidable but with the customary silence that surrounds Lavin's program we'll never know. I'm sure if there was a way to disguise the 16 win total it would be done. I'm sure I'll be attacked for this post too but what else is new?

So you, who inundated the board about what a great player Cook was and how he was going to take the NBA by storm because of those 8 assissts and his "tude" now shouldn't have been playing? Comically comical even for you!!

Shame on you Logan. You have been here long enough to know bobre has every right to contradict himself after every third word. You are Beast of the East just highlighted his latest redmen.com folly.

Of course, there certainly will be more where that came from.

For all the geniuses out there boil it down to it's unwise to play prized freshmen 35 minutes plus if you're looking to get more than one year out of them. I don't know how much clearer I can make it. Lavin's recruiting broke down and left us with six bodies two years ago. Moe got to show what he had big time and the rest is history. I'm not going to get into Cook except to say I wish he was in the league along with Bootsy, Hatten, Hardy etc. Sh** happens. This year Lavin took a risk red shirting Gift and using Sampson for big minutes. We'll see how it works out but I don't think he emerged like Moe did. If he did decide to leave it would sure put a damper on next year so these are big decisions. Back to your Mensa meetings.

You know it is worse idea to give your best player less minutes.

For one thing they are your best players, and they should play more. Because they are your best players.

Secondly, if it were ever to come out that a coach limited a kids minutes just to impede his draft position, then I am not going out on a limb by saying that coach will never get a high ranking freshman again. Kids want to know the quickest way to be developed and get to the NBA.

Besides, as you know (since you repeat this drivel often), it is impossible for a kid to be hidden in NYC. That is why every kid should come play here and play under the bright lights of Broadway, right? Maybe Lavin should have redshirted Harkless. That would have guaranteed another year.

If Harkess went to some University in Podunk (like those middling programs in Kansas, Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio St.) he could have easily been stashed away for a year and not one NBA scout would have noticed him. During your many coffee klatches with these countless scouts, you would have outsmarted them. No doubt keeping how good Harkless was a secret from them, no matter how many lattes they tried to bribe you with..

No but maybe if Moe had gone to a team with a more full roster he might have been brought along a little slower. Lavin has had a "uperstar or bust" philosophy from the beginning and took chances with Pelle, Sampson etc. That's how you wind up with six guys, 13 wins and lost momentum. He also managed to lose his most valuable assistant in the bargain. The only consolation was that my seats were much better than his in the sky box. Now that Sampson finally showed up and Obekpa came on board I had hoped for a few more wins this year. It would have been nice if Dlo was available for 10 - 12 minutes vs PC and Marquette but it wasn't to be. Somebody said that move might have been made to make next year's team look better. I discounted that when I read it but now I don't know. It would vave been interesting to see Sampson and Moe play together and I wonder what that would have done to Moe's draft status. Something we'll never know.

So now it's Coach fault that Dunlap accepted a position to be a NBA HEAD COACH??? SMH.. What would you like him to have done? Somehow I think the answer will involve Ron Roberts.. the new Sean Evans.

How did Lavin manage to lose Dunlap/

Silly question.

If Lavin was more considerate and didn't get cancer, or had just sucked it up and coached, Dunlap would not have been in display last year. And of course no one heard of Dunlap before he took the assisant coaching job here.

Cant argue w that logic. LOL.

If Hines leaves, he'll be blaming Lavin for taking more than 12 hours to mourn his father's death, thereby showcasing Rico.

Kranmars my man!
Good for you and all SJU faithful!!!

I haven't read all the posts under this topic so excuse me. I'm a Coach Lavin fan.
There was and would be no better choice to coach this program and bring it back to life which he has already done. End of the discussion.

Let's see what else.
Oh yes he made us - that word - relevant. Or was it elephant?
Top players consider us and, by golly, some have even signed on the proverbial bottom line! SJU bottom line.

He has a terrific staff in place.
We get tons of attention out of the Dark Ages since Louie last wore a sweater.

Coach Lavin has made mistakes - dammit fire the man. Get him out of Queens asap! The Army once had a "zero defect" program and here Coach Lavin has - well we've seen them right? - DEFECT. The man's not perfect. A bad hire I tell you.

I went to school with what's his name, almost fired at Duke for not getting to the Final Four in his first years. What was his name? My memory slips by. The one at Duke. Took over hen Duke stunk and Duke continued to stink those early years. But hey Lavin has already been here a few decades, no??? Enough already.

And what was that guy coaching the Nets who took Seton Hall to the Finals. Yes after a dozen years of trying, then P.J. mounted the top hill.

And oh yes, let me see here. Coach Lavin inherited a mess. A big mess. But forget the mess and absolutely don't forgive the extra time it's taken Coach Lavin to get us to where we want.

And all the excuses Lavin makes for himself - beaten to death sort of - his father dying, the cancer thing. Maybe they didn't happened. Or maybe, damn life, they should have occurred before he took office. Steve Lavin blew it big time.

Harrison? Name a team that doesn't have a player issue now and then??? With Roberts and Jarvis we would have been lucky to recruit even Benjaimn Harrison or William Henry Harrison. But D'Angelo??
Come on Steve you can do better. Listen to some of the posters here. You can do more and better in less time.

Three years already? And no crowns? No final fours. No four aces. No four freshman? No four nothing. Four-gedabouditt.

We should fire the guy before he gives us all gray hair - oh wait - some of us already have gray hair from fretting with Roberts and Jarvis. Or some have had gray hair since the Big Indian Joe rode the plains around Jamaica. I think George A. Custer rode with him. Buried up at West Point.

Well maybe Roberts and Jarvis had something over Coach Lavin. They kept expectations low, they kept the number of posters low, so things were smooth.

Give it a break already. Really?
We are so fortunste to have Steve Lavin running the ship and an yadn all "observations" are correctible.

Goodnight Alice. Goodnight Kranmars. I'm an early to sleep person unlike my college acquaintence who almost got his backside fired for doing at Duke what Lavin has done at St. John's.

God save us.

all the best
and excuse any typos, I'm too wound up to spell check. Oh wait this board does not have spell check. Let's get rid of both this board and Lavin!
Serves both of them right.

SSG isn't it amazing how you read stuff by guys you know are absolute dopes and it still manages to get you all wound up. Sleep well buddy.

Early to bed early to rise - went to gym this morning - my daughter teaches pump and combat - now back to this site.

thanks for the good wishes; yeah I can be quite emotional perhaps creative all of which I had to submerge at my alma mater; thanks too for picking up the solid stuff versus the sarcastic/sardonic material; an I don't know the personalities of the players on the board - so I should try not to let any post cause such a trong reaction. Thanks again.

all the best
let's go NIT (I hope)

Early to bed and you don't have to watch some of the lousy games we played. Maybe if Steve had decided to use his famous educational strategy when we were stuck playing with six guys he might have lost a few more and held on to Harkless and Dunlap. Instead of using walkons to make up for the recruiting shortfall and calling it a season he turned Dunlap loose and avoided embarrasment by playing his best outrageos minutes. Believe me, those 13 wins were costly facesavers and only improving by three with a full roster the year after was very revealing. The problem started when half the killer recruiting class didn't show up. Dunlap was never going to the NBA without that opportunity.
