I don't think Lavin is the answer...

... but what's even scarier, is the fact that, I don't know of any reasonable candidate who would be.

Either way, I'm not sure Lavin's right for the new league. 5 years or so down the line, I can see the difference in teams in this league being so small, that in-game coaching may decide the winners and losers (more so then in a power conferene like the Big East, where recruiting is like 65% of the battle). I could see Lavin (and Jay Wright, who no one will ever accuse of being the brightest bulb in the shed) getting carved up in this league by the likes of Brad Stevens, JT3, Buzz Williams, Jim Crews (assuming he stays at SLU), et. al.

But again, the scary part is, I have no logical replacment who would turn it around either.

What an idiotic post. If Moe stayed we would be a Sweet 16 team and Lavin would be a genius. There is a lack of skill on this team...let Lavin have one freaking season with a junior he had for three years.

Of course Lavin deserves more time. I'm just skeptical that he can deliver, especially in the new league (which is ironic, since it won't be as tough as the old league).

Not sure we would have been Sweet 16 (or NCAA Tournament) with Moe here. Still lack outside shooting, and would still have no point guard to give these guys the ball in the right positions.

I love Lavin and I am sure we would have been better with Moe, but maybe the sweet 16 would have been a reach. Too many things went wrong. No Sanchez, Branch injury, Harrison suspension and general inexperience add in our lack of shooting and none of this would have been cured with Harkless being here this year.

That being said, I like our kids and I like our coach!
Next year we should be much better.

Hard to say if Moe would have helped tonight. Ain't blamin Lavin. Who could figure #15 on Nova is Hercules compared to Branch. Lavs needs some guys to put in when regular rotation ain't in the mood. We got some help next year with Sanchez but ya can't invent a point guard and we in big trouble there. Ya can't be getting hard because Branch makes a nice pass every once in a while. Biggest spot of year and he show nothing. He 's not out of high school yesterday. Not only cant he take over game, he passes up open shots on a team that can't shoot. I trust Steve to get most stuff fixed, but PG tough to fix.

Oh yes, short term future is very bright. But, 2 or 3 years from now, I don't see us being anything other then painfully young again. Also, while I'm more optomistic about it now then I was in the past, I still wonder what this league will be like in 5 years. I'm critical of ESPN, but without there support of the new league, I wonder how many casual fans (certainly not the people on here) will be able to follow us. Yes, the Fox Sports 1 will be avaliable in 90 million homes, that helps, but old habits die hard, and some folks might not even be aware of the channel's existance at first. Bottom line, the future is very very clouded right now, IMO, long term more so then immmediate (which I do think is bright).

If nexts years team is not top-20 and achieves at least sweet 16, Lavin should be fired.

If you cant accomplish at least that with an experienced team, that includes Harrison, Sampson and Sanchez, then there is no future sucess that can reasonably be anticipated.

If you think that recruiting is no more than 65% of the battle, and will count for even less in the new conference, there was no reason to read on.

65% was just a number. It probably does mean more in the Big East. Whatever it's worth in the new conference will be less (though not unimportant), because the resources will be more even (no giant elephants in the room like Syracuse, UCONN, Louisville, et al).

Fired? For not making the sweet sixteen because of the likes of Harrison, Sampson and Sanchez? Which part of Harrison's low 30's 3 point % impressed you the most? Or Sampson's inconsistency? Was there a you tube clip of Sanchez I missed that convinced you that an early NCAA exit means it's Lavin's fault? Plus, why stop at firing him? How about making him walk the plank, be put in the stockade, or better yet have Hannibal Lecter stick him in one of those contraptions he used on Giancarlo Giannini?

I don't know whether or not Lavin is the answer, but after BH, FF, MJ and NR, he had better be or our program may be done for good. FWIW I still think FF was the best of that lot.

I think Harkless would've definitely helped. Harkless has a skill set that was missed by this team. IMO, Harkless would've contended with Porter for Big East POY, if he had returned.

saying lavin should be fired....serious...i hope you never went to SJU as you make the university go down in rankings as you are beyond stupid.

the man had raised the level of the program so much in 3 yrs while having cancer, dad dying but OH NO, we do not think about that.

OOOOOOOH--fire him when he has this top level recruits and do not make the NCAA...HELLLLLLLLO....he has recruited amazing during his 3 yrs while having cancer, ect....

so annoying to come to these sites, as most of you are cluess you CYO scrubs......

so sad, i went to the same school as you but you have no idea how sports work, you dunces.

we are lucky to have lavin........

Recruiting is 90% of the battle. Just ask Calipari. By the way, before hiring Calipari, who did Kentucky have on their short list - Jay Wright. Who teaches seminars in Villanova's school of continuing ed - Jay Wright. Who is a brilliant public speaker, who can make an audience of 500 students feel as if Jay Wright has known them and been with tem through their 4 year college career.

But your post is about Lavin. First off, I think he did a credible job this season. I don't think there is a strategy that would have beaten Nova with the guys we put on the court, unless of course the strategy was to use Sanchez as a ringer. I think you shoudl go to bed, and tomorrow a new season will be only 8 months away.

One thing that is disturbing is Lavin's inability to teach these kids how to break down a zone. This has been his Achilles heel from the time he got here. Two years ago it was our downfall once teams saw he didn't have a clue against the zone. He's great for SJU but he has a few giant holes in his coaching.

I like Coach Lavin and think he represents my school well. I will still give him time to get this done. If you don't like him, you can always go root elsewhere. I have faith in him and look forward to next season.

I wish we got to the top faster, but few things in the world work like Xbox or an iPod touch. My son and his friends (10 years old) sometimes struggle with understanding that concept. Generation Instant Gratification.

A generation argument.......

next year we will be better than Lavins 1st year.

Sweet 16 at least. I honestly believe it and I write this being so pissed after tonights game I drowned my sorrows in a penn station carusos slice and a cheesesteak sub and now have acid reflux

In bold: No doubt about it! We certainly missed the skills of Harkless. Imagine, Harkless and Sanchez both on the floor.

That's why I could never understand why so many posters on this site were excited to see Harkless make the NBA after one season when we desperately needed him ths year to reach the next level. We are not at the level of a Kentucky or Duke who can go out and replace a great player with another high school AA. I think that this years recruiting woes are a reality check for many who believed that the staff could consistantly recruit against the likes of the Kentuckys, Dukes or even UCLAs of the world. Losing Harless was a big hit to this program.
