I believe we need an elite coach...

Who is everyone's top choice

Doesn't matter who we want, it is up to the administration and wether their choice actually wants to come and at what terms. Neither Wright or Donovan are options as they would not come. Who knows what the administration thinks about Pitino and if he would actually come.

Personally, after all these years, I would like them to just finally get it right, whomever it is.

Last night Tony Kornheiser who usually has nice things to say about SJU referred to both Geo and SJU as decaying programs. Sundays game will be two hours of the golden years of Mullin and Ewing for the tv audience.
The question will be who gets let go first between Anderson , Ewing, Cragg or the MSG execs who allowed this game to be played on their floor.
Hopefully after MSG counts the game receipts and the tv audience they tell Father Shanley to hire an elite coach or take his team somewhere else.

I actually saw that as well, it seems like we are the punchline the last few years from people who remember us as a national brand.... it's only been 20+ years if not the small run in the early 2000's we weren't real good in the 90's either... hire Rick enough!!!!!

The only reason Sean Miller, an elite coach, was available at what I will call the Xavier level, is because of the "baggage" he acquired at Arizona. Same for Sampson at Houston. And sorry but in 2023 there is no way the SJU job is more desirable than Xavier.

There happens to be one guy left who is an elite coach that might be possible for SJU because of his "baggage." If the school doesn't hire him they will be hiring from a pool of fired guys, assistant coaches, and mid-major coaches. Period.

Now as to the "baggage" - I saw fifteen minutes of guys on CBS last night laughing at SJU. I see nothing but praise all over the place for Houston and Xavier. But that's me.

At this point, hard to argue with Pitino if he’s available. If not, I’d look hard at the guy from Charleston who has at least been an associate head coach in the Big East (Xavier).

He also had a lot of success at Winthrop. The problem is I think they have a zero percent chance of landing him. Bigger programs than SJU will have interest in him. Again, Moser and Odom didn't want this job four years ago. With a team coming off of being in the NCAA tournament. Since then four years have passed - all bad on the court. And the issues that come up over an over that would deter a coach from coming here, worst facilities in the Big East, etc., have not been addressed at all. Not only has ground not been broken on updated training facilities, the secret "plan" that the AD talked up for a few years doesn't even get mentioned now. Somehow this lack of action gets blamed on lack of donations, but if no "plan" is shown to the public why would anyone in their right mind donate to the program at this time? "Trust me" is not a great way to elicit donations.

Things are bad, real bad, and they go way past the current coach.

If you want to illicit donations from the fan base, then prove to the fan base that you're commited to providing them with a winning basketball program. The fan base proved at the Nova game that they'll jump right back on the bandwagon at the first positive sign, so it's not like we've gone anywhere. Just stop with the talk and the gimmicks, and start with some real actions.

The name "Jay Wright" should not be uttered on this site. As a possibility.

Can we be real?

The man had probably the best job in the conference. He was winning and had elite talent every year. He is a local hero in that area.

He stepped away because he didn't wanna coach anymore. If he came to the conclusion that he did want to coach again... you do realize the 76ers are picking up the phone... the New York Knicks are probably picking up the phone. The Lakers. Kentucky after Cal is done there. Texas.

Think of any INSANELY GOOD job out there. Wright would be at the front of the line. He'd probably push Neptune out and retake his old job before he ever even googled St Johns on his iphone.

Enough

What we need is an elite recruiter and great judge of young men in terms of talent, effort and coach-ability. All the x and o skill in the world won't help much in a power conference where the top programs have elite level athletes who can do a lot of things well. Lesser talent will make a smart coach look somewhat inept very soon.

This post is spot on. Unless we land Pitino or a miracle occurs we are not getting the pick of the litter. This job would scare any up and comer like it did four years ago.

Some not snarky names that I could see being willing to interview.

John Becker - Vermont Coach
James Jones - Yale Coach (seemed interested last go around)
Wojo - Former Marquette Coach
Kimani Young - UCONN Associate Head Coach

If this doesn't excite you, it doesn't excite me either. But things seem to be going so badly not making any change seems like the worst option. All four of these guys offer the "you never know" factor at least. As I just can't see Cragg being bought out as well as Anderson the Wojo as next coach move feels like it could happen to me.

And although Wojo being hired wouldn't inspire me AT ALL, one does never know. He was kind of a hot property at one time and he is still young. That's all I've got.

Not a great list.

The guy who I would target from my list is Becker. He never seems to get mentioned for bigger jobs while he wins his league every year. The same league Pikiell came from. He's 54, which is not exactly a young coach but there is still runway. Without some on the court success it will be very hard for him to effectively recruit here as his hiring will not inspire money people, and this is a pro sport now. But I saw Vermont play forty or fifty times a few years back (as a few might remember when I tried to temper outlandish expectations for Smith), the only team I saw more during that period was SJU. And I can tell you that Becker will run an actual offense and will insist that guys man up and play defense.

It's something!
