Beating a dead horse I know, but would be dereliction of duty not to go the Pitino route if he is indeed interested. It is funny to read preclusions about candidates like SJU is a destination program where coaches thrive. Yes, the salary is good & a BE job, but 22 years of NCAA futility, a coaches burial ground behind Taffner, high cost of living and taxes in NY area and sub par facilities & arena does not exactly put SJU in driver’s seat.
Net of a splash hire like Pitino, premised on his alleged desire to remain in Westchester, there will be a narrow band of choices imo. I don’t think Rick coming here will materialize either, so any of the prospects with interest will come with risks of varying degree. SJU has no choice but to roll the dice on guys whose strengths markedly outweigh their weaknesses. Individuals excelling at lower D1 level programs as a HC and those from upper levels with solid HC records, but perhaps stumbled in last gig (like Mack), all seem worthy of Shanley’s consideration Imo.
If the school’s finances are indeed flimsy then it may be tough to pay Anderson’s buyout plus the buyout to take a coach from another school. There’s word that Pitino’s buyout at Iona is $0. I have no idea if that’s true or not but if so that adds even more appeal to him. Wonder if the buyout factor would cause the admin to take more of a look at guys like Mack than Langel, Boynton etc
