Heron Out for Season

Big thanks to Mustapha for sticking around this year and for being a team leader. To me, he was so obviously laboring up and down the court with a compromised gait. Yet, he still tried to give us a boost as a spot up jump shooter. The kid can play for dollars when healthy

As mentioned earlier, I feel terrible for Mustafa. But if I may add a silver lining to this cloud, keep in mind that we played some of our best ball of the season earlier in the year when Mustafa was out. So I’m not ready to bail on the rest of the season just yet.

I get the "Hippa," "wasn't asked" and "doesn't comment" comments, but as the GM (OK...AD) of the team and program, with this season-impacting news a mere half-hour away, I'd say he had some responsibility to mention it. Could understand not commenting if he hadn't had the twitter conversation. I like the guy, very professional, and taking the program(s) in the right direction. But still...many of us were just on with him.[/quote]

It doesn’t seem you actually understand what HIPAA is

Having worked in Health Care fo 30 years, I do. A patient's medical records are private. They are not to be shared with anyone until that patient signs a "Consent for Release of Information Form". Very simple and straight forward, Mike Cragg needed permission from Heron to talk about this.

I really don't understand why anyone has a problem with this.

When it rains, it pours.

Already struggling to find wins in the Big East, St. John’s will now be without senior guard Mustapha Heron for “likely” the rest of the season, the school told The Post in a statement.

Heron, the Johnnies’ second-leading scorer at 13.8 points per game, re-aggravated a pre-existing right ankle injury and is in a walking boot. He will not play Wednesday night against Providence at Carnesecca Arena and may have played his last college game.

“A timetable for Heron’s return has not been set, but it is likely he will miss the remainder of the 2019-20 season,” the school said in a statement.

Heron initially injured his right ankle Dec. 10 against Brown and missed the next three games, returning in a road loss to Xavier on Jan. 5. He struggled in Big East play, averaging 12.4 points on 36.1 percent shooting. He started coming off the bench two games ago, replaced by sophomore Greg Williams Jr.

Now it appears St. John’s, which is 13-11 and 2-9 in the league, may have to finish out the season without one of its most talented players.

This should officially end Anderson's never had a losing season streak. Welcome to the big time CMA

He coached in the SEC.....I'm fairly certain he's accustomed to the 'big time'.

He averaged 16 points a game in the SEC as a freshman and sophomore. For his college career, he shot 40% from the arc and 80% from the FT line. If that's easy to replace, I guess this rebuild will be a piece of cake.

Not fair to judge him on the last two, injury ridden, seasons.

The SEC not "big time"? Might be best, Dee, if you think twice -- or maybe even four or five times -- before you post something as flat-out ridiculous as that again.

Not to mention the Big 12.

Mr. Heron's injury is yet another example of the bad luck that has overshadowed the St. John's men's program since the clueless Administrators at St. John's offended the basketball gods by changing the sacred name "Redmen" to the more pedestrian "Red Storm".

It is time to call Cardinal Timothy Michael Dolan to perform an Exerocism to rid the program of the bad karma.

Speculation on other board that this reoccurrence of injury could potentially be a protective measure for his future (like Lovett) given season results of team and himself.....

Wonder if any merit to that.

It’s possible but I just don’t see ehay he’s protecting. He’s played like crap this season and it’s certainly not just his ankle. What does he have to gain by sitting out? Just to blame his poor play on the ankle? It still doesn’t make him draftable at all because his play has been poor this season.

Didn't someone mention he was seen in a walking boot on campus recently? Is that an act too?

If true, bad break for a truly good person. By all accounts he does very well in school and has his priorities straight. I still remember when we tried recruiting him then the exciting rumors that he may transfer here. That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if this is another LoVett situation. Maybe he was 95% healthy and could still play but didn't want to risk any more in a lost season. The boot can just be for show who knows? For anyone bashing those who suggest it may be LoVett 2.0, blame the administration not us. They have already lied to us about LoVett and just like him, there was no evident injury during a game so who knows? If they had our trust, we'd all believe what they tell us. There comes a point when there's just so much negativity and you just become numb to it. That's where I'm at now...the news didn't even impact me except for wishing the best for Heron and I thank him for coming here.

If that's the case, I'm fine with it. To me it's no different than an NFL prospect sitting out a meaningless Bowl game to avoid injury and prepare for the draft. This season is over. He gave it his best shot, tried to play with an injury and it didn't work out. I have no problem with him deciding to prepare for a shot at getting drafted.

For me, the Lovett scenario was entirely different since he bailed before league play even started.

Agree...but I think fans want people to be up front. Just say "I could play if I wanted to, but given the season we've had and given the fact I want to go pro, I decided it was best for my future to sit out the rest of the season as a precaution based on my last injury". I would've been fine with that.
