Heron Out for Season

I posted after the Creighton game that Heron had a great future after basketball and meant it. Excellent student from all reports who always gives back to the community and who was trying all year to show senior leadership even as his body betrayed him. As others have said already, thanks Mustapha for choosing and sticking with the Johnnies and hope to see you on the bench rooting your teammates on.

I get the "Hippa," "wasn't asked" and "doesn't comment" comments, but as the GM (OK...AD) of the team and program, with this season-impacting news a mere half-hour away, I'd say he had some responsibility to mention it. Could understand not commenting if he hadn't had the twitter conversation. I like the guy, very professional, and taking the program(s) in the right direction. But still...many of us were just on with him.

Under HIPPA actually has an obligation not to mention it.

Disagree.

It's not like you can put him on an injured list, and replace his roster spot, so I'd actually be from the Belicheck school, when it comes to injury disclosure. I wouldn't say anything, and I wouldn't reveal my starting lineup until I have to report it to the scorer's table.

It’s a tough break for Heron . He took criticism harshly on this Board but , knowing now that he tried gutting it out , gives him props for playing hurt . Even on 1 good ankle , Heron was a gamer . Had he been able to play this year at 100 percent , his stats and the Team’s would be better than they are . We now know why he didn’t have that explosion to the hoop that was a part of his game last season . May the best happen for him in his future . He’s a good guy and deserved better than a season and college career ending injury .

I have great respect for Heron. He always put in an effort, though not always successful. Get healthy, your basketball career is not over.

Feel terrible for Mustafa, by all accounts a great kid and representative of the school. Having said that, and as others have said, time to move forward and give the other kids-Williams in particular-more PT. Ya just never know how things will play out over the rest of the season. Maybe we can still grab a few more wins and make the NIT.

I just got this via text alert. Very sad. We should all say a prayer for his quick recovery and good future.

What phone provider do you use? I'd like to know so that I never use them... :)

I think I am stuck in the Groundhog Day movie. Same story over and over again.

But didn’t that have a happy ending? :)

I got you babe.

Very sorry for Mustapha; grateful for him for coming here and giving it his best. Seemingly wasn't at 100%. Wish him well in the future, in basketball and out.

When it rains, it pours.

Already struggling to find wins in the Big East, St. John’s will now be without senior guard Mustapha Heron for “likely” the rest of the season, the school told The Post in a statement.

Heron, the Johnnies’ second-leading scorer at 13.8 points per game, re-aggravated a pre-existing right ankle injury and is in a walking boot. He will not play Wednesday night against Providence at Carnesecca Arena and may have played his last college game.

“A timetable for Heron’s return has not been set, but it is likely he will miss the remainder of the 2019-20 season,” the school said in a statement.

Heron initially injured his right ankle Dec. 10 against Brown and missed the next three games, returning in a road loss to Xavier on Jan. 5. He struggled in Big East play, averaging 12.4 points on 36.1 percent shooting. He started coming off the bench two games ago, replaced by sophomore Greg Williams Jr.

Now it appears St. John’s, which is 13-11 and 2-9 in the league, may have to finish out the season without one of its most talented players.

We've been in a 20 year monsoon. #cursed
Maybe a good thing in the long term. It's obvious now that this was impacting his performance, and it will give someone who is a part of this team's future, a chance to play more minutes. If we were 5-6 in the league, this would be a lot more crushing, IMO.
It doesn't matter for this year because we already stink. It's just the point that literally anything that can go wrong with this program will go wrong. It's really unbelievable at this point.
The kid came here and did everything the right way. He worked hard and represented the team and the university as well as anyone could have hoped. Now he gets the devastating news that his college career is over, and your first thought is to feel empathetic towards our basketball program?? Heron gave his heart and soul to the program, and your attitude about this situation is, "oh well, this season was a lost cause anyways." Shame on you.

Maybe that's why some players don't want to commit here? Because we have some fans that only care about players that can help them be able to brag about the success of the basketball program. But the moment they can't contribute to the team, they are cast aside and forgotten about.

Good luck to Mustapha. I wish him well.

We were 2-1 with 2 wins over ranked teams and a 2 point loss to Butler without Heron. Good kid, bad chemistry maybe? The fact we are 2-9 since that time is very telling imo.

Ugh. Rough for everyone. Heron seems like a good person and I hope he finds success after he graduates. I'm not holding my breath that he'll return.

Wow this sucks, he has battled injuries, demotion to the bench and yet always there cheering and not sulking. As previously said by others, I dont think he fully recovered from ankle and knee issues, relegating him to a shell of his former self. He became just an outside player. I really like the player and love how he carries himself on and off the court. Goodluck young man.
