Does anyone actually call them the Red Storm?  I mean regularly without being paid to do so?

Which is a great point. You rarely hear it on broadcasts. Whereas I often hear "the Jayhawks take the lead" or "The Huskies turn the ball over". I feel like for us it's "St. John's wins the game". I feel like I hear us referred to as The Johnies more than Red Storm. I rarely hear Red Storm.

I was going to make that point about Johnnies as well.  It's almost like announcers avoid saying Red Storm, probably because they know they are going to slip up and say Redmen.  Just like sports talking heads still can't stop themselves from saying Redskins or San Diego Chargers.

I could accept Red Storm, if our dance team had performances by Stormy Daniels. /media/kunena/emoticons/wink.png

I would love to find out what the other options were besides Red Storm.

"In addition to Red Storm, other nickname candidates were Thunder, Red Thunder, Rolling Thunder and Red Raiders."

From those choices Red Storm and Red Raiders would be the only two I would choose.  And likely Red Storm between those two.

The article doesnt mention, but I wonder how those names were even sourced. None of them seem particularly good. And there was a real opportunity to pick something cool and unique.

Its grown on me to the point that I no longer flinch, or wonder who they are talking about, when I hear it.

I doubt its going to grow on me any more than that at this point.

I never got the name "The Express" except that you couldn't call a women's team The Redmen, and certainly not "The Squaws".    Syracuse was fortunate, in that "The Orange" is a fruit, which hardly makes sense except to retain most of the name and the school colors.    There aren't (m)any schools teams named the apples, grapes, or lemons.

Clearly we wanted to retain Red as the school color and as part of the name.

As I've maintained for decades, these name changes have not done a damned thing to improve the plight of Native Americans.   It does make me wonder why SDSU retains the name Aztecs, and the scantily clad team mascot analogous to our chief.

The name and mascot changes may not improve their plight, but that is not a reason to continue demeaning and insulting them.

All the name changes are eyewash.   In no way did the hundreds of thousands of sports teams with Indian related names demean and insult Indians.  .  Should we rename all the cities and towards with Indian tribal names?   The Dodgers full original name Trolley Dodgers.  belittles vagrants, and their nickname - the Bums - comes from that.   Isn't that demeaning towards those who live in poverty?

Don't get me wrong - the Indians since retired logo of a caricature of an indian could have offended some.

This is little more than gestures with NOTHING attached to it.    I believe in civil actions that better the lives of people - educating them, giving them opportunities to pursue skilled jobs that raise them out of poverty, that address the destruction of the family unit.   Name changes have not moved the needle one iota.   Neither have postings on social media.   Neither have protest marches.   Neither have many well intentioned government programs.

Native Americans are still second class citizens in our country.   Name changes have not done a damned thing to lower or raise public perception of Indians.   To me, the only clearcut name change I'd endorse is Redskins.   Braves, Warriors, Indians and the like are not inherently offensive.   Tomahawk chops, Indian whoops and chants are.

I'd much rather see year over year a decline in poverty rates among Native Americans, decline in substance abuse, and increase in reading scores and high school and college graduations.

Umm...not quite.

Trolley Dodgers came from the gauntlet of trolley cars pedestrians (not vagrants) in Brooklyn had to "dodge" on a constant basis when going about their daily business, and when going to the ballpark way back in the 1890's.     It had nothing to do with vagrants.

"Dem bums" is not an official team name.  It's a construct of a writer who developed a cartoon character for his paper after a conversation with a cabbie who said something along the lines of "Dem bums is bums" when he asked how the ball club was doing.  I'm not going to debate whether that phrase is demeaning or not to those who live in poverty because:  1- Its not a team or MLB  name for the club.  It comes from the fans/media, and fans say demeaning things every day that can't be controlled by the league or the franchise...   and, 2- Not every poor person is a bum.   Many of them work multiple jobs (40+hrs a week) at $7.25 an hour just to feed and cloth their families.

Oh, I didn't realize you were the expert representative of Native Americans in this country. However, many of them consider that name to be insulting and demeaning.

Back in the day, Vicki Kress...then wife of assistant Butch Kress...was the womens' basketball coach.  That's where we got "Kress Express".

At least 5 or 6 fans came to games back then, including parents.
