The dreadful choice of Red Storm as nickname is surpassed only by the school's selection of mascots. Ugh.
to be fair if you couldn’t get enjoyment out of flag boy running around till he almost passed out I’m not sure if you can enjoy life . Lololol

Flag boy was the best.   Why on earth are we not doing that anymore?

I wanna see him now as flag man with a beer belly run around. If I can do maybe 2 laps I'll give him 3 before the puke starts.: ) I'm almost wondering if he is a member here and not saying

Or call two fans onto the court for a "Flag Boy Competition".   I'll sign a waiver.

Every home game they should have a redmen.com competition. Run 2 lengths of the court then try and hit shots from different spots. Winner gets a storm burger. This would be so funny this would actually get me to that hell heat and ass and back breaking carnesseca arena

When I disparage the parade of expensive and  disappointing mascots, it never was intended to include Flagboy. I never thought of him as a mascot. The flagboy experience was short-lived, but it was stirring and memorable.

Was never a fan of the name however,a name doesn’t win games.if they eventually get in the top 10 consistently, they can name it whatever they want and I will love it

I guess for Cleveland the bright side is if Elon Musk or Bezos ever colonized Mars and forms a baseball team Cleveland can pivot to Guardians of the Galaxy
My vote was for the Cleveland Steamers. Oh the endless marketing ideas.
Looking forward to the series of exhibition games against the Tahitian Face Masks.
Can't have a halftime show without someone playing a rusty trombone.

After they dropped the Redmen name and before they settled on that mutant horse mascot they had a kid dressed in a tux high hat and cane, think Mr. Peanut, as the mascot.  He received a lot of grief from the fans.  At one point I told him he was really earning his scholarship, he just looked at me smiled and nodded.

Red Storm is laughably bad. I remember going to work and being mocked with “Stormy”, or what the hell is Red Storm and so on. I despise the name. Over the years they have become just St. John’s. Amongst my family you still get how about those Redmen. Of course, this site is still Redmen. I appreciate that.

Finally, I really miss the “Let’s go Redmen” chant at the Garden. I always thought it was a pretty cool chant to support the team. Specifically, I remember we were playing Syracuse in a big ranked matchup at MSG. Syracuse hit the floor first and of course the “Let’s go Orange” nonsense started. Slowly the “Let’s Go Redmen” chant took over. Finally by the time SJU hit the floor we were in full roar. Oh well. I guess you had to be there but it was fun. All gone now.

No.

But at least its not Gladiators, er Guardians that the Cleveland Baseball Team has to wear. And no, I am not a "Tribe" fan. I only wear pinstripes.

I don’t mind it but it’s also always been Red Storm to me. I’d probably hate it if I rooted for the team when they had a different name.

I kinda like how it’s unique at least. How many teams in college basketball are the Wildcats? It’s so lame. I like having a nickname that no one else has.

it is funny though, I went to St. John’s for 4 years (2016-2020) and I don’t think I ever heard them referred to as the Red Storm by literally anyone

Jack is right.

It's never going to be a highly used name unless we really win big, but at least it's unique.

Let's face it, most over 50 will never accept anything but Redmen, and those under 25 and future generations will know Redmen to be little more than a part of history best left there due to the pc reasoning it was changed for. Those in the middle are relatively indifferent.

I would love to find out what the other options were besides Red Storm.
I vaguely remember the 59er's, after the 59th St. Bridge, being one off the names being considered. I don't do drugs and don't drink a lot, so the most it could have been was a weird dream.

"In addition to Red Storm, other nickname candidates were Thunder, Red Thunder, Rolling Thunder and Red Raiders."

From those choices Red Storm and Red Raiders would be the only two I would choose.  And likely Red Storm between those two.

Red Raidees was already taken but Colgate has since dropped the red.
