Has the Red Storm Name Grown on Anyone?

Bit of a silly and random question but figured I'd ask. But with the recent name change to the Cleveland Indians it had me thinking, most sports teams name are out of date or dont really make sense anyway.

I know many are passionate about the Redmen name and hate the Red Storm name so I think I know what to expect here. But for me, I found myself thinking while I don't like the Red Storm name and still don't understand how it could have been chosen, I kind of am indifferent about it now as the years have passed.

I still believe the school has a great opportunity to rebrand and follow that with a marketing campaign, but that's for another post.

Feel free to share your thoughts.

It has for me.

The name changed in '94, after my freshman year. I  had known then as Redmen for about the decade before.

It was odd those first few years.  Name didn't make much sense, and I hated the yellow and almost royal blue accent colors in the new uniforms.  The horses were brutal.

But it grew on me, and respected the reason for the change.  In retrospect, it was one move St. John's was ahead of its time on (before social media would have eaten school alive).

So, name is OK for me.  Has a good flow to it even if still doesn't make much sense, but I like the branding when they do the red with lightning bolt and city skyline.

Rather be Red Storm than UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs

I'm not sure which name is worse, the Guardians or the Red Storm
IMO, they're tied because they both suck!!
Call them what you want, St John's will always be the REDMEN to me

the cleveland caveins took a poll of their fans.
guardian came in a distant third. double b*tch slap to the fans.
i believe SJU also took a nickname poll of their fans and that red storm was a distant ....

Interesting process

I'm with the Duke on this one. I've always referred to them as the Johnnies (or just St. Johns) even before the name change. No biggie for me, I get the reason for the change.

Will say it seems like Cleveland could have come up with better name than the Guardians though. Maybe the Cleveland Rockers as many identify Cleveland with the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame?

I despise red storm and never use the name when talking about our team to my friends

Syracuse just changed mascots not the name.

Cleveland Guardian sounds like a newspaper or insurance company.

Name changes without any other actions accomplish little to nothing.    Had we instituted Native American studies as a major, but built a Native American cultural center instead of sun yat sen hall, it would have had substance, or maybe even scholarships for native americans.

I don't remember us being referred to as the Johnnie's in the 70s or 80s but could be wrong.  Only redmen.

Im ok with the name but never refer to them as such, too much of a mouthful to speak, if only 2 syllables.

I am not a fan of "johnnies" because its too close to st Bonaventure which are called the bonnies  but better than red storm I guess.

I guess for Cleveland the bright side is if Elon Musk or Bezos ever colonized Mars and forms a baseball team Cleveland can pivot to Guardians of the Galaxy

Pulling out the old "it's grown on me . . . like a fungus" wouldn't be strong enough to express the hatred I feel. So I'll say it's grown on me . . . like a herpetic sore.

Is that actually correct? I thought the teams were just the Orange now across the board. But I'm sure broadcasters still slip and call them Orangemen along with the fans who do it on purpose, which is why I want us to go to the St. John's Red. We'd still call them Redmen. We could probably even get away with selling "Red Men" shirts instead of "Redmen" ones.

My vote was for the Cleveland Steamers. Oh the endless marketing ideas.
