Brady’s problem is his lack of quickness playing defense. He finds it very difficult to cover any backcourt man or most wings and because Pitino plays a defense that results in constant switching it is almost inevitable that Brady ends up covering a quicker player who has no problem penetrating past him iwhich results in another SJU player picking up Brady’s man.
This usually ends up with an opponent having an open shot. No matter how hard he works at it he just can’t get quicker.

I like Brady and his energy and heady play. He knows how to play, find open guys dnd has a nose for the ball. He’s plagued by a reputation that he hasn’t (yet) realized. I do believe he has a role. But he would be much more key if he could knock down a higher percentage. That’s my take. I feel that he’s rushed shots that were for the most part uncontested or barely contested in many instances. But we can agree to disagree on that.
So he still should shoot better but leading the team with a very respectable 3 point % and he’s “plagued by a reputation”? Shooting comes and goes, just pretty much a basketball fact. And ANY player would be much more key if they could knock down a higher percentage. The fact is, he has shot a fine but streaky percentage, which is not at all unusual; played well, and I think he is not plagued so much by reputation but by fans who took to a narrative and won’t let it go.

Part of the reason some expected a better shooter out of the gate.

Pitino on Brady during signing (#90 ESPN, 22nd at SF position)

"Brady Dunlap has an awesome future," said Pitino. "He's a gym rat who shoots it as well as any wing basketball player out of the high school ranks. Brady is athletic, quick and will really thrive in our fastbreak system."

Well, I guess the difference is I didn’t buy into Pitino’s coach speak BS while recognizing the significant difference in the high school and major D1 games. Besides waiting until I see a player play for myself to form an opinion.

He is 0 for Last 12 from three
Take out Wagner and Quinnipiac he is 3-15 this year from 3.
Listen he doesn’t do anything to hurt us and is fine as 8th or 9th man. The problem is people are designating him as something he simply is not and then others like myself feel inclined to question the whole “Brady Dunlap can shoot” thing.
We should all leave him be. If going to make the tournament this year there are at least 8 other guys that we need to play well before Dunlap becomes an issue.

...Take out Wagner and Quinnipiac he is 3-15 this year from 3....
Take out Georgia and Harvard, he is 10-19.... anyone can cherry pick stats...

didn't he get hurt vs Baylor? maybe that is contributing slightly to is Ofer the past two games played...

Like most players... he isn't as good as his best days, and isnt as bad as his worst... if he finishes around 35% from 3 this season...i'll be pleased... get stronger in the off season- comeback for junior yr

The only people designating him as a knockdown shooter are the ones criticizing him for not being a knockdown shooter.

If it’s true that he has missed 12 straight and he’s still shooting 38.5%, that’s impressive. And guess what? You and others were riding him before he missed 12 straight.

I’d like to see what % he shoots when Smith is on the floor.

My point is his name is brought up good or bad more than any ST John’s role player I can remember.
To your point he is not the worst player we have or the best shooter. Guy at back end of rotation. Pitino figuring out Smith cluster F and Richmond playing significantly better are our 2 most pressing issues.

Because every single miss means he's not fit for this level according to several posters. For whatever reason, he doesn't have the mechanics to be ripping those quick threes. He needs to adjust. Move back from the line a few feet unless he's in the corner, fake a 3 and set up for a cleaner look (which he did once earlier in the year), pass out of it (which he does often), or just work on those quick ones until you have the mechanics. It's not an existential problem.

He picked up some bad habits last year because he only got 1 good look a game if he was lucky. He will get plenty more if he's patient and Smith is in the game.

lack of quickness
lateral like last year's team, or longitudinal ? ;)

GC62, agreed, you can't teach height and you can't teach quickness, this comes from a slow guard who had a hard time keeping up with opposing guards who were much quicker than me. My freshman Coach at Nazareth High School cut me for that reason along, I could shoot okay and pass well, but defending quick players-impossible.

I hope Brady can cover that weakness a lot better than most.
