Hardship Waivers
Heron Summer Camp issue is still the holdup apparently, but sense it will be resolved soon. If not, I will retire before being stoned. Or get stoned before fully retiring. :)
We can't #close [ducks]. Seriously though, we are amazingly bad at getting things done.

The NCAA is just freaking unbelievable! Hassle some kid over a harmless summer camp that actually helps young people while the big-time cheats skate....
The NCAA is an authoritarian, corrupt bureaucracy. (That's not being 'political' is it?!?)
Unbelievable.
I thought it was a tournament he sponsors for inner-city kids against gun violence, but not sure.
Very curious though: Was this an issue when he played for Auburn?
Why would this be a 'problem' to decide whether his request for a hardship waiver is legitimate?
Did it impair his standing as a hoops player at Auburn?
If not, why should it 'matter' now?
Unless, it was just discovered or this is the first year he held it?
Dunno. Bizarre.
Let's hope.

Camp was held this summer in Ct after his transfer. Link; https://twitter.com/basketbullhoops/status/1014904735986520065?s=21

Apparently, he has been active in the 'Mustapha Heron Skills Academy and Reading Program' for a few years, including when he played for Auburn. The Program gave out 'awards', i.e., sneakers and equipment, to kids and teams who would sign up to read 'x' amount of books.
Also, his AAU team wore orange patches' against gun violence on their uniforms.
His dad is in law enforcement, which may explain the connection.
In fact, he was named to the ALL SEC Community Service Team in 2017 for THIS program.
This summer his Skills Academy sponsored their first 'Stop the Violence Program'.
Mustapha seems like a super, all-star, all-person kid.
This may be 'it' and why the NCAA would 'object' to this seems totally arbitrary and bogus. (There's a better word, but I'll be polite!)

I took a quick look at some articles about the camp, and any conceivable issue would appear to have nothing to do with whether he qualifies for the hardship waiver.

With that said, as an attorney (albeit one that doesn’t specialize in NCAA type issues), I don’t understand why his involvement (for a social justice issue) could impact his eligibility. Assuming that it was a legit program (which it appears to be), the NCAA would lose any remaining credibility that it has if it takes some type of stand against this.

However, I would normally assume that SJU played it safe by making sure — prior to the running of the camp — that there wasn’t the slightest chance of there being an issue. But with the gap period between ADs, I could see it somehow falling through the cracks.

Still, I still would be surprised, from both a common sense and PR perspective, if the NCAA does anything more than slightly delay the waiver.

Agree MBaldi & sense NCAA may just have requested more detail at some point. That does not necessarily mean the NCAA “objected” to anything as Chicago Days implied. Folks I respect in hoops community in NY & Ct seem to think the waiver gets done. I’m staying positive & no sense jumping to conclusions. The common read was the NCAA would render a decision in October approximately. That’s where we are.

I agree common sense, logic & justice would say this is a no brainer approval. Unfortunately, I am a life-long Johnnies fan and thus always expecting the worst, even without any logical reason basis. As my daughter's one time favorite band Green Day would say "Wake Me up When October Ends".

Done!???!!!??? Thanks Paulz!
And I was just about to 'object' more about the 'hold up'!
Looks like he's not playing in the scrimmage tonight, although it looked on facebook like he was limping around a bit (just a bit), so maybe they are just being cautious.

OTOH, it appears as though Figueroa attacks the hoop with authority. I also want to give credit to the red team (led by Justin Simon), because they have at least tried to run halfcourt offense on a couple of occasions.

Oh okay.
So, i will hence regale.
How can any 'hold up' be anything other than 'arbitrary' and 'capricious' when this 'Campaign Against Violence' tournament was nothing but an umbrella extension of Mustapha's Skills Academy that has been operating since before Mustapha's career with Auburn--where, he was named to the ALL SEC Community Service Team because of this organization's social service work and his activities with it?
Some things have to be called out.
Period.

I agree Chicago Days. I don't know enough about the process but if this goes on few more weeks or if he's declared ineligible for this , can't SJU hire a law firm and sue the NCAA?

Hopefully, its not necessary and the NCAA is doing what it does best, preying on all but its half-dozen favorites.
Hopefully, we prevail
This is just totally arbitrary and unnecessary, hence infuriating.

It’s close, and it seems very likely to happen, but Heron is not yet cleared to be eligible #sjubb

For all those questioning Paultz commitment to this team, just know that he’s been up all night tracking this development :)
Let’s go johnnies!
