Guys on Matt’s Radar

We clearly just can't do nothing if we don't land a big. So if a talented SF wants to come aboard, I'm all for it. If the defense is going to be spotty, we may as well just try to overwhelm teams offensively. Of course, that means Clark will have to be PF and he might not be happy about that. And how would Caraher feel about a SF suddenly coming aboard?
I thought about Caraher not being too happy as well. Mullin’s multi guard / wing offense is ‘fluid’ so there might be ‘room’—particularly if Simon leaves early.
We shall see if the LJF possibility proves out or not, but man the guy looks very talented. Was a 4* out of HS, ranked 114 nationally by one service I think, signed with. New Mexico State, but left due to a coaching change and wound up at Odessa JC.
Kid could be a great ‘find’.
Sense we land him

Wowzer! Would be great! Trust me, I know we need a big guy badly—but signing LJF would be a celebratory event, in our strange compartmentalized world!

Lol. I hear you JohnnyFan!
But the Giants could've signed OL free agents or traded for them, and didn't--which is why we now have the very savvy Dave Gettleman.
My point is, yes we badly need a big--but if we can't get any at all, and the likes of a LJF are available, itd be foolish to pass on a talent like that.
A Dominican as well.
Maybe related to Felipe?!?
Joking.
Nah.....we lived this episode last year. If we don't land a big, I want changes to the staff.

That said, I do like LF and I am excited about Gettleman.
I hear you JF. This isn’t the correct thread—but I like Gettleman Big time also. I think Giants pick Barkley , if Browns pick a QB.
Talk about the ‘best athlete’ available. That guy oozes HOF potential.
Only if Gettleman fixes our offensive line.
+1,000

I love this Felipe Lopez mini me! Hopefully staff uses Felipe in recruitment.
Here is Bashir Ahmed's successor:

Yes, the kid starred at last year’s UA event—scoring 20 pts / game and was recruited by some high majors, including Miami, MS State, VA Tech, and Rutgers.
Time to celebrate IF we can sign him.
And yes, as you say ‘72, Bashir’s replacement for next season.
A great ‘surprise’ get if it happens.

That said we need a grad or juco big so we aren’t constantly overmatched with depth at the C/PF spot.
I see that he's listed as a SF.
Athletic, good upside, learning game after splitting time playing football, but really needs to bulk up if he is expected to bang inside seems to be common view.
If nothing else, it looks like with him and Earlington, we'll have the best football roster in BE basketball.

LJ would be a huge get. He actually ranked 71 last year by 247 and currently shoots 48 percent from 3 in college.

Dude would provide insane depth and spacing immediately. A lineup of Ponds, Simon, Clarke, LJ and Keita ( all can shoot the three) would devastate opponents.

Agree with several posters that LJ would be a surprisingly good get this late in the process.

On paper, a starting lineup of Ponds-Dixon-Simon-Clark-Keita is good, but the 'second five' of Trimble, Williams, Diakite, Roberts and Earlington doesn't get me that excited.

Having LJ as that reliable 6th man or starter depending on the lineup Mullin wants to use would be really, clutch IMO.

As IDRAFT mentioned, good replacement for Bashir who gave us much needed rebounding and athleticism on defense against the 2-3 and sometimes 4. Not sure if he can equal that but this kid is a legit scorer. Reading his recent games in Feb/March and he lit it up with big numbers.

He would be a great get this late.

Do we have a visit scheduled?

If we lose Keita to injury..........................

If he needs to bulk up for basketball what the heck was he doing playing football? Must have been the worlds tallest field goal kicker.
Wide receiver who is more like 6’8 than 6’10 referenced here at times and very thin, perhaps wiry if a positive spin is needed. :)
Yeah definitely not 6'10", believe he was compared to Tyrus Thomas at one point so we will see. Good thing is football players usually have the required toughness to play earlier than most young guys. Look at Ky Bowman from BC, he wasnt highly ranked but came in ready to go. This bodes well for Roberts and especially Earlington who should be a bulldog from day 1. We're going to need these guys to play important roles off the bench it seems.

Another kid whom I think would seek out and thrive under Mullin.

Dan, that is an interesting perspective which I hadn't thought of. Boy, do I hope you are right!

Marillac argued on JJ that Simon would make a good 4. First I thought he was nuts. But the more I thought about it, taking into consideration his skill set, seeing how good Dom did as a 4, and our lack of bigs. I think he could spend some time at the 4 if we get this JC recruit.
Please ,no more of what Owns did. He was basically an average player at 6-11 could block shots and could not guard bigs his size and had no face up moves and thought he was a guard
That's all well and good but its seems highly likely, if not definite, that he would have been more productive on next year's team than anyone that they have or will bring in after his departure, at least in the short term - i.e. next season.

That's just Marillac trying to make up for trashing the kid's G/SF skills the first half of the season, if not longer (once the kinks got worked out here I stopped spending too much time on JJ, don't have time for two boards). Probably still not willing to admit that he's a way above average 3. ;)

Admittedly very subjective, but i disagree if we get this JUCO wing, LJF.
Plus, I think Keita will match Tariq's point totals; not the blocks, but he'll be better on the boards--so maybe a 'wash' all-in.
Don't get me wrong, I pine for that 'extra' big guy, big time!
But such is the world of a Johhnies fan these days, we have to be thankful for half measures--like Josh and Marcellus playing like 'tough' football players off the get-go in the rugged Big East!
Although, this kid Figueroa looks like a legit scorer and I think might prove to be an actual 'plus' to Bashir by the middle of the BEC season.
Let's hope.
